Bad luck always seemed to fall on those who could least afford it, like a frayed rope snapping at its weakest point.

The thought of her uncle and his struggling family brought tears streaming down Autumn's cheeks. Her heart clenched painfully in her chest as she turned to Keith, clinging to him as if he were her last hope in this world.

"Senior, I know you have connections. Please, help my uncle. If you promise to help, I'll do anything you ask. His family has suffered enough—you have to help them," she pleaded, her voice trembling with raw emotion.

Meeting her tear-filled gaze, Keith reached out and pulled a tissue, gently wiping the tears from her face with a tenderness that seemed almost out of place in the sterile hospital room. Then he pushed the bowl of oatmeal back into her hands with quiet determination.

"You don't need to worry about your uncle. Even if you hadn't asked, I would've arranged specialists to see him," he said firmly, his voice carrying a warmth that wrapped around her like a protective blanket. "Now finish your oatmeal. You just broke a fever—has it fried your brain already? You're not thinking straight."

His uncle's life-saving grace was reason enough for Keith to step in, and with his close friendship with Zack, walking away was never an option. He understood her worry, knew she was speaking out of fear and exhaustion, but since she had said it, he would hold her to it. There would be no backing out now.

His words felt like an anchor, calming the storm that had been raging in Autumn's chest. The weight on her shoulders seemed to lift just a little as she took a deep breath and began to eat her oatmeal.

After finishing her oatmeal and taking her medicine, the nurse came in to set another IV. She stole a glance at Keith, her eyes lingering on him with undisguised admiration.

This man was striking—far more handsome than any celebrity she'd ever seen. And the way he cared for Autumn made him even more magnetic, like a character pulled straight from a romance novel.

Unable to resist, the nurse leaned closer to Autumn with a knowing smile. "Where did you find a boyfriend like this? So handsome, and so devoted. He's like my dream man," she whispered, then added, "You don't know—last night your fever kept coming back again and again, and he never stopped tending to you. He changed basin after basin of hot water, never once impatient. So gentle and attentive—honestly, it makes me envious."

She had been on duty the whole night and had seen with her own eyes how Keith treated Autumn like something precious, something fragile he couldn't risk losing. It had been almost unbearably moving to witness such devotion.

Autumn glanced over at him, seated at the desk, working online. A gentle warmth spread through her chest, melting away some of the ice that had formed around her heart. If it weren't for Keith, she'd probably still be at home, feverish and alone, with no one even noticing.

Maybe, having someone who truly cared by her side wasn't such a bad thing after all.

But the scars from her last relationship cut too deep.

She no longer had the courage to take another step forward. What she feared most was that her needs would grow, that the other person would grow tired of her—just as it had been with Julian. For years they had been deeply in love, yet time had worn them down until they became bitter opponents, sick of the very sight of each other. The thought of it was pitiful, a painful reminder of how love could turn to ash.

She stayed in the hospital for three days.

Keith spent the first two by her side, only returning to the company when he truly had no choice. During those three days, she hadn't seen her uncle once—he must have already been discharged. That was just as well. She didn't want them to see her like this, didn't want them to worry, and certainly didn't want them to know about her cancer.

On the day she was discharged, Selena came to pick her up. Keith had been buried in work ever since returning to the company, his messages brief and to the point.

The moment Autumn sat in the passenger seat, her phone rang. Seeing the caller ID on the screen, her grip on the phone tightened, her knuckles turning white.

Selena leaned over curiously, her eyes narrowing. "Who's calling? Why aren't you picking up?"

Noticing it was Alex, Selena let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Oh, look at that—it's your ex-husband's assistant. He's probably calling about Sienna, trying to bargain with you. Your ex really is disgusting. The minute he thinks you're no use to him, he drops you completely."

The phone continued to ring in Autumn's trembling hand, the screen glowing like an omen of trouble. Whatever Alex wanted, she knew it couldn't be good.

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

What a heart-wrenching chapter! Watching Autumn struggle with her gratitude toward Keith while simultaneously being paralyzed by her past trauma with Julian creates such powerful emotional tension. The nurse's observations about Keith's devotion were absolutely swoon-worthy, but Autumn's internal battle—that fear of becoming a burden, of being abandoned again—feels so raw and real. And that cliffhanger with Alex's call? Absolutely maddening! Just when she's starting to heal, the past comes knocking, bringing all its complications. The way Keith so naturally committed to helping her uncle while also showing such tender care melted my heart. This chapter beautifully balances warmth and anxiety, leaving us desperately wanting more!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars

## Next Chapter Prediction

Alex's call can only mean trouble regarding Sienna, and knowing how manipulative Julian's world can be, he's likely trying to pressure Autumn into something—perhaps money, or a scheme to discredit her in some way. But with Selena by her side and Keith's growing protective presence in her life, I predict that Autumn will finally stand her ground and refuse to be manipulated. The upcoming confrontation could very well push Julian to reveal his true colors even more, creating new tension while simultaneously creating space for Keith to step up and show her what genuine love and protection really look like. One thing is certain—Autumn's peaceful recovery is about to be thoroughly disrupted!
