# Chapter 2: The Countdown to Freedom
Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 2 of "REMARRIED AFTER I SECRETLY DIVORCED THE CEO" – a chapter that feels like the quiet before a storm, where Autumn Lewis takes her first real steps toward liberation. Buckle up, because this is where the story truly begins to unfold!
---
Autumn sat at her desk, the weight of the divorce agreement in her hands feeling lighter than she expected. She had already made peace with her decision days ago, the moment the doctor's words echoed in her ears – terminal illness. If death was coming for her, she wasn't going to waste her remaining time clinging to a man who had never truly loved her.
She pulled out her phone, snapped a photo of the signed divorce papers, and sent it to Grace Palmer – her mother-in-law. The message was simple, just a photo and nothing else. But she knew Grace would understand.
And understand she did. Within seconds, her phone buzzed with a reply: "Got it."
Autumn let out a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding. The day after her diagnosis, she had gone straight to Grace, ready to negotiate her exit from the Carter family. Grace hadn't hesitated – she had been waiting for this moment for years. Julian could finally be with Luna, the heiress of the Lewis family. A powerful alliance. A better match. And now that Autumn was terminally ill, she wasn't just inconvenient; she was a liability.
So Grace made her an offer: six million as compensation, as long as Autumn got Julian to sign the divorce papers. Autumn accepted without a second thought. She wasn't doing it for the money – she was doing it for her freedom.
She slipped the diagnosis and divorce agreement into her bag, then opened the drawer where she had placed a resignation letter two days ago. Clean cuts hurt less. She had made up her mind, and there was no point in dragging it out.
The walk to the CFO's office felt longer than usual. Frank Miller looked up from his desk, his expression shifting from surprise to genuine worry as she handed him the letter.
"Ms. Lewis, you're resigning?" His voice cracked slightly.
Autumn had been his most trusted employee for years – the one who made his position secure, the one he could always count on. Losing her would be a blow to his department, and to his peace of mind.
She nodded. "Yes. Thank you for all your support these past few years."
Frank tugged at his tie, then reached out to gently touch her sleeve. "Is it the salary? I can put in a request for a raise and promotion!"
Autumn gave a soft laugh – the kind that didn't quite reach her eyes. "It's not about that."
"You're really sure about this?"
"Yes. I've made up my mind."
She had already decided to walk away from Julian. There was no reason to stay in his company any longer. Every corner of this building reminded her of him – of the lies, the neglect, the cold indifference. She needed to breathe new air.
Frank sighed deeply, pulled out a pen, and signed the form. After putting the pen away, he asked quietly, "What's the reason for your resignation?"
Autumn answered honestly, her voice steady. "I'm sick. Between work and health, my health matters more."
Shock flashed across his face. He said nothing more. What could he say?
The resignation process would take a month. The divorce cooling-off period would take a month. In exactly one month, she would be free.
When she returned home that evening, Autumn walked over to the old-fashioned calendar she had bought yesterday – a relic from another era. She tore off the first page, crumpled it into a ball, and tossed it into the trash. Beneath it, two bold red characters stared back at her: July 1st.
One month from now, on August 1st, she would finally leave this home behind.
Zoe, the household helper, walked over with a plate of fresh fruit. She glanced at the calendar on the coffee table, curiosity flickering in her eyes. "Ma'am, is there a special reason you bought this kind of calendar?"
Autumn smiled, a practiced expression that masked the storm inside. "My birthday's coming up. I'm using it to remind myself."
Zoe looked doubtful. Wouldn't a phone reminder do the job? Who still used paper calendars nowadays? But she didn't press further, setting the fruit down and retreating to the kitchen.
"All right," Zoe said, pausing at the doorway. She hesitated, her voice dropping. "Ma'am, I just called Mr. Carter. He said he has a dinner engagement tonight and won't be home for dinner."
Autumn plucked a grape from the plate, popped it into her mouth, and mumbled, "Mm, got it."
Zoe's eyes widened in surprise. In the past, whenever Julian had a dinner engagement and didn't come home, Autumn would lose her mind. She would call him dozens of times, demanding explanations. She would track his every move. She had once installed tracking software on his phone. And then... no one knew what exactly happened, but she ended up in the ICU from a suicide attempt.
But today? Today she was calm. Too calm.
Zoe couldn't shake the feeling that something was brewing. When things were this quiet, trouble was usually just around the corner.
The phone on the coffee table buzzed. Autumn glanced at it – her cousin, Zack Lewis.
She slid to answer, and his cautious voice came through. "Autumn, are you off work now? Are you busy?"
She looked at the apple slice in her hand. "Not busy. I just got off. What's up?"
Zack hesitated, then said, "Well, I got a promotion and a raise. And Mom and Dad said they haven't seen you in a while. We were hoping you'd join us for dinner tonight."
"Sure," she replied without hesitation.
"Great! I'll come pick you up."
After hanging up, Autumn got to her feet. She told Zoe she'd be going out and wouldn't be home for dinner, then walked out of the villa. Zoe watched her retreating figure, torn between suspicion and worry.
"Damn it," Zoe muttered under her breath. "I knew it. With how controlling she's always been with Mr. Carter, how could she just sit still?"
It turned out, Autumn was planning something big.
As Autumn walked down the driveway, her phone buzzed again – a message from Zack. His car had run out of gas, so he asked her to wait a little.
She replied with a simple "okay."
Zack was the son of her third uncle, three years older than her. He was twenty-seven this year and still single, much to the frustration of his parents. Every time they urged him to settle down, Zack would let it go in one ear and out the other. He never took the matter seriously.
Autumn rarely kept in touch with the rest of the Lewis family, but she remained close to her third uncle's household. Her uncle and aunt, unable to have a daughter of their own, had always doted on her like she was theirs. Back when her mother walked away from the marriage without taking a cent and moved out of the Lewis home, it was her third uncle's family who supported them through those hard times. They were the ones who truly stood by her and her mother.
She stepped out of the residential complex, and within minutes, her phone rang again.
"Autumn, it's rush hour now. A friend of mine happens to be passing by your area, so I asked him to pick you up."
Before he even finished speaking, a black Bentley pulled up in front of her. The sleek, luxury vehicle seemed to materialize out of nowhere, its presence commanding attention. Before she could react, the window rolled down.
What appeared was a face that felt both familiar and distant.
Still holding her phone, Autumn forced herself to speak. "I think... I see him."
The man had sharp, defined features. He wore a black shirt with the sleeves rolled high, revealing strong, muscular forearms. His gaze was deep, intense, almost magnetic. As he lifted his eyes to look at her, memories from five years ago surfaced.
Back then, the girl used to follow him around with a textbook in hand, calling his name sweetly, begging him to explain things to her. She had been so innocent, so full of hope. She had written his name in every notebook, dreamed of a future that never came.
Now, after all these years, the innocence from her youth had faded, replaced by a touch of quiet maturity. She wore a fitted smoky lavender dress, her hair pulled up into a high ponytail. There was a flicker of hesitation in her eyes – a ghost of the girl she used to be.
She was much thinner than he remembered.
His gaze, already deep, darkened further. Then his lips parted, and he said just two words.
"Get in."

**Reader's Impressions & Star Rating:**
Wow. This chapter is a masterclass in quiet tension. Autumn's transformation from a desperate, controlling wife to a woman calmly counting down the days to her freedom is both heartbreaking and inspiring. The scene with her cousin Zack's mysterious friend – that black Bentley and those familiar eyes – sent chills down my spine. Who is this man? What does his return mean for Autumn's carefully laid plans? The emotional depth here is incredible, and the pacing is perfect. Every detail matters, from the old calendar to Grace's cold reply. This is storytelling at its finest.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.9 / 5 Stars
**Next Chapter Prediction:**
I have a feeling that the mysterious man from the Bentley is about to shake up Autumn's carefully constructed world. He's clearly someone from her past – someone she shared deep memories with. His sudden appearance just when she's trying to leave everything behind cannot be a coincidence. Is he going to be her ally, or will he complicate her plans? And what about Julian? He hasn't even reacted to the divorce papers yet. The next chapter will likely see Autumn's past and present collide in ways she never expected. Buckle up, because this ride is about to get bumpy!
