Chapter 313: Just in Time
Maya’s heart gave a violent thump.
That voice.
For hours, she had been waiting for it. Hoping for it every time footsteps passed outside Jaime’s room, only to be disappointed again and again.
She knew that voice.
Maya spun around.
The hallway behind them was still empty, but hurried footsteps echoed from somewhere beyond the corridor, growing louder with every passing second.
Her eyes remained fixed on the far end of the hallway, afraid to look away. Afraid that the hope suddenly swelling inside her would disappear just as quickly as it had come.
Then a shadow crossed the wall.
A second later, a tall figure rounded the corner at a run.
Maya’s breath caught.
For one suspended moment, everything else seemed to disappear-the storm raging outside, the fear that had been clawing at her all morning, the endless hours of wondering where he was and whether he was safe.
He was here.
Damien came running toward them, his eyes already searching the hallway until they found hers. Ashcroft appeared behind him only seconds later, struggling to keep pace.
And just like that, the crushing weight Maya had been carrying in her chest finally began to
loosen.
“Damien!”
Jaime lifted his head from the bed as much as he could and broke into a wide grin.
“You made it!”
Damien reached them, breathing harder than usual. His clothes were slightly disheveled, his hair damp from the rain, but his attention immediately went to Jaime.

“Of course I made it.”
Jaime eyed him. “You look terrible.”
Damien couldn’t help but chuckle. “I flew through a typhoon to get here, and that’s the first thing you say to me?”
“Just making an observation,” Jaime replied casually.
A few relieved laughs broke out around them.
Damien shook his head as he stepped closer to Jaimes bed, his expression turning more serious. “How are you feeling?”
“Hungry.”
Damien’s mouth twitched as he gently patted his arm. “Then I guess you’re fine.”
Maya barely heard their exchange. She was still staring at Damien, trying to reconcile the man standing in front of her with the fact that only minutes earlier, she hadn’t even known
where he was.
Damien finally looked at her, and the moment their eyes met, whatever teasing remark he had been about to make seemed to soften.
“Miss me?”
Maya ignored the question. “What happened? Harper said they lost your plane.”
The lingering worry in her voice wiped the last trace of amusement from his face. Damien stepped closer and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead.
“I’ll explain everything later.”
Maya clearly wasn’t satisfied, but she nodded anyway. For now, the explanation could wait. He was here, standing in front of her in one piece, and that was all that mattered.
Before either of them could say anything more, Ashcroft bent over with his hands braced against his knees, still trying to catch his breath.
“Damn!” he panted. “You run fast!”
Everyone turned toward him as he slowly straightened, still breathing heavily.
Harper immediately seized the opportunity.
“Ha! Clearly out of shape. What a shame.”

Ashcroft shot her an annoyed look. “I’d like to see you keep up with him.”
Harper smirked. “Please. I wouldn’t have fallen behind in the first place.”

Before Ashcroft could fire back, Daniel stepped forward, greeting Damien and Ashcroft with a respectful nod before reminding everyone that they were already running behind schedule.
“I’m sorry, but we really need to take him in now.”
The mood immediately shifted.
Ashcroft caught his breath and walked over to Jaime’s bed. “Hey, bud. You’ve got this, all right?”
He held out his fist.
Jaime bumped it with his own, a confident smile returning to his face. “You bet!”
Ashcroft smiled and gave his fist one last squeeze before stepping aside.
Damien moved closer next, his attention settling on Jaime. For a brief moment, neither of them said anything before Jaime held out his fist.
“See you when I wake up?”
Damien bumped his fist against Jaime’s. “I’ll be right here.”
Jaime gave him a genuinely grateful smile before turning to Maya as she stepped closer and took his hand again.
“We’re all going to be right here,” she assured him.
“I know, May.”
She tightened her fingers around his, suddenly feeling as though there were a thousand things she wanted to say and not enough time to say any of them.
Instead, she leaned closer. “I love you.”
Jaime’s smile softened. “Love you too.”
Maya kissed his forehead before reluctantly releasing his hand, giving everyone else a chance to have a moment with him.
One by one, the others stepped forward.
Dahlia kissed his cheek while Alice gave his shoulder an affectionate squeeze. Kenji reminded him of all the plans they still had waiting for him once he recovered.
