"What the hell is so funny?" Tessa shrieked. Already humiliated and yelled at by her own boyfriend, she lacked the spine to scream back at Logan, so she redirected all her fury toward Claire and Zara.
Deep down, she wasn't completely oblivious. She had sensed Logan's emotional distance for a while.
"It's not a crime to laugh, is it?" Claire retorted, amazed by Tessa's skewed priorities. Instead of policing their reactions, shouldn't she be ripping into her treacherous friend and cheating boyfriend?
Tessa glared daggers at them. "Stop treating my life like a spectator sport!"
"If it weren't for you-"
"If it weren't for us, you wouldn't even know you were wearing a giant pair of metaphorical horns," Claire cut in coolly, bringing the brutal truth down like a hammer.
Zoe couldn't stand the public spectacle for another second. "Claire, Zara, please stop trying to drive a wedge between us."
"Logan and I are completely platonic."
"We have never done anything to betray Tessa."
"Even if Logan had feelings for me in the past, he is Tessa's boyfriend now."
Claire looked at Zoe with a half-smile that was pure ice. "So, you knew perfectly well that Logan was in love with you, yet you still pushed him onto your best friend?"
"Was Tessa supposed to be the recycling bin for the trash you didn't want?"
"Or did you just want to keep your devoted fanboy within arm's reach?"
Zara clapped her hands in delight. "Claire nailed it."
"Wow, cousin. I had no idea you were so twisted."
Zoe had never been so thoroughly humiliated by Zara before. Her eyes locked onto Claire. It was this outsider who had stripped away her polished facade and left her exposed.
"I... I didn't know back then. Logan..." Zoe stammered, her excuses falling apart. Desperate, she threw a pleading look at Logan, silently begging him to back up her
lie.
Logan immediately stepped up like a dutiful knight. "Zoe had no idea how I felt. Stop spewing lies about her."
"My feelings for her are my own burden. She's innocent."
"Tessa, don't you dare blame Zoe for this. She's been a saint to you."
"Do you honestly think I would have ever agreed to date you if Zoe hadn't begged me to give you a chance?"
Tessa looked as though she had been struck physically. The man she adored was blatantly confessing his love for Zoe right to her face, shielding the other woman with every word he spoke.
Claire and Zara were practically glowing with amusement. Was this guy completely brain-dead? He had just obliterated his own defense.
Zoe had obviously signaled him to deny his feelings or claim it was just a fleeting crush. Instead, Logan had thrown himself onto the sword to protect her honor, making him look hopelessly obsessed. It was ke pouring gasoline on a grease fire.
"Zoe, I treated you like a sister, and this is how you repay me?!" Tessa screamed, advancing on her former friend.
Zoe backed up, tears welling in her eyes. "Tessa, you have to believe me, I didn't know!"
"You told me you liked Logan, so I helped you get together."
"I don't know what I did to deserve being treated like the villain here."
Tessa wasn't buying a single word of it anymore. Logan's fierce, desperate need to protect Zoe had driven Tessa past the point of rationality and straight into a jealous frenzy.
Logan had always treated her with a
polite, lukewarm indifference. The only time he ever showed genuine enthusiasm was when Zoe's name. came@p. He even insisted on dragging Zoe along to half of their dates.
