He hadn't said a word about her cousin being there.

"Your cousin is in Cabinda for a conference," Winston explained.

Grant looked incredibly stern, rarely cracking a smile.

He usually wore a mask, hiding his handsome features, but his aura was what truly drew people in.

It was an intensity forged from working among the dead, an energy that kept most ordinary people at a distance.

Claire, however, wasn't afraid of him.

When they were kids and Grant was studying anatomy, Claire had even acted as his assistant.

Grant always believed Claire had a natural talent for forensics. He had once tried to convince her to pursue it as a career, which ended with Winston chasing him down the street with a rolling pin for miles.

Claire was a young woman; why on earth would she study forensics?

Was it because she was too gorgeous and too popular with the boys?

Just look at Grant. He was pushing thirty and had never even held a girl's hand.

Well, maybe he had-if you counted the hands of female corpses!

"You're not getting transferred to Cabinda, are you, Grant?"

Claire had just been making conversation, but to her surprise, Grant nodded. "If everything goes as planned, I'll be transferred here after the New Year."

The official paperwork hadn't cleared yet, but his mentor had already urged him several times.

He wanted him in Cabinda.

Grant had an impeccable track record in Apex, helping the criminal investigation department crack several major cases.

The Cabinda precinct was incredibly jealous.

Cabinda had its fair share of excellent forensic pathologists, but the profession itself was always severely understaffed.

Within the system, top-tier talent had to be fought for tooth and nail.

Claire, however, didn't quite understand why Grant was willing to relocate to Cabinda.

Wouldn't that mean leaving his home behind?

Priscilla voiced that exact question.

Grant offered a faint smile. "For me, being in Cabinda means I get to handle more murder cases."

Claire and Priscilla shivered

simultaneously. He truly was a man who worked with the Grim Reaper;

everything out of his mouth sounded terrifying!

Who could possibly relate to a guy who accepted a promotion just to see more dead bodies?

While they waited for their food,

Claire couldn't help but ask, "Grant, do forensic pathologists ever think about corpses while eating?

"Like, when we dig into our meat later, are you going to picture the bodies you've recently autopsied?"

Grant nodded. "Yes. Sometimes, I even find inspiration from the food."

"Claire, are you interested in minoring in forensics?"

"I think you're incredibly gifted. You're a natural talent in this field."

"If you decide to take it up, I'll happily write you a recommendation..."

Claire grimaced, exasperated. "Thanks, but I'll pass."

Sure enough, Grant had never given up on recruiting her to the forensics department.

Claire had no idea if the police force actually needed someone like her.

But she was pretty sure Grant did.

Why else would he be so relentlessly persistent?

"You don't need to be afraid. Slicing open a corpse is a lot like cooking. Don't master

chefs have incredible butchery skills?"

Grant tried to persuade her.

He could see that Claire possessed incredible emotional stability.

A girl like her was tailor-made for forensics.

"I'm not scared. I just genuinely dislike cooking."

Grant paused. "...If you ever change your mind, let me know."

Priscilla chimed in from the side. "Grant, why are you always trying to recruit Claire

and not me?"

"Am I not as good as she is?"

Seriously? In her own cousin's eyes, was she really inferior to Claire?

Priscilla felt a sudden twinge of sadness.

Sure, she couldn't outshine Claire, but Grant was her actual blood relative!

Grant, completely oblivious to her

feelings, gave it to her straight. "You're emotionally volatile and incredibly careless. You're not suited for forensics." ng FindNovel.net
