Macy nodded, and Lily and Tabitha Prince quickly filled Dewitt in on the terrifying events that had just unfolded on campus.
No one had ever expected Claire to be targeted so violently.
Where the hell were her bodyguards? Were they completely useless?
Dewitt's expression turned murderous, but he forced out a clipped "Thank you" to the three girls.
He turned and sprinted away, immediately dialing a high-level contact in Cabinda.
Macy, Lily, and Tabitha exchanged stunned looks.
"Do you think that was really her cousin?"
"I don't know, but he was incredibly hot."
"Whoever he is, he was definitely panicking. And we didn't tell him anything classified, so we shouldn't get in trouble, right?"
"If he really is her cousin, I wonder if he's single..."
That last comment came from Lily.
She had despised Claire all semester, but if she could land that cousin as a boyfriend, she was more than willing to unilaterally declare Claire her best friend!
Tabitha mercilessly crushed her fantasy. "Keep dreaming. We're not friends with Claire, and she knows we can't stand her."
All three of them had spread vicious gossip about Claire, and Claire was well aware they talked trash behind her back.
So, objectively speaking, there was zero chance of Lily becoming Claire's cousin-in- law.
"Besides, that guy looked a lot older. We're still in college. The age gap is way too big," Macy reasoned coldly.
Macy only had eyes for Ethan Monroe, which made her incredibly rational.
Lily pouted. She didn't think an age gap was a problem at all.
Older guys knew how to spoil a girl.
Besides, he was Claire's cousin, not her dad!
By the time Dewitt arrived at the perimeter of the hospital, Dane had already breached the building.
Dewitt was forced to watch from behind the police barricades.
"Dewitt, you really shouldn't go in there. Even if you don't trust my girlfriend's unit,
you have to trust Silas Carl. The guy is a machine."
The contact Dewitt had called was Hanson Patton.
On paper, the two men had absolutely nothing in common, yet they were blood brothers.
They had met years ago in a brutal firefight on the border.
Dewitt had saved Hanson's life.
Hanson had only been eighteen at the time, practically a kid.
Ever since that day, Hanson worshipped Dewitt, treating him like his own flesh and blood.
When Dewitt called, Hanson instantly knew what the emergency was.
He just hadn't known Claire was Dewitt's cousin.
Talk about a small world.
"I can't just stand here and do nothing."
Dewitt had genuinely believed that relocating
Claire to Cabin
keep her safe.

"Whatever happens, those operatives aren't making it out alive."
"The worse it gets, the more we need to stay calm."
God, he was terrified Dewitt was going to pull a gun and charge the barricade.
This wasn't the lawless border, and it certainly wasn't Kaston.
If Dewitt pulled a military-grade weapon out here, was Hanson
supposed to look the other wael

help him bury the bodies?
"I get it," Dewitt muttered, not wanting to put Hanson in a compromised position.
If Silas Carl was really as good as Hanson claimed, he'd let the feds handle it first.
But if they failed...
Dewitt's eyes darkened with lethal intent.
"Dewitt, please tell me you're not planning something insane?"
The dead silence on the other end of the line was giving Hanson a panic attack.
What did "I get it" even mean in this context?
Dewitt forced a tight smile. "I'm not going to do anything stupid."
