Barry waved her off. "Go on, you must be exhausted. It's late, you shouldn't have to stick around just to talk with us."
He just figured it was Claire's family calling to check in, since she hadn't made it
home yet.
Claire saw Lance's name on the screen, so her voice was flat when she picked up. "Yeah?"
Lance's grip tightened on his phone when he heard her. “Claire, do you know where Cindy is?"
Claire almost laughed. “Seriously, Lance? How would I know where Cindy went?”
"It's winter break. We're not even at school together," she added.
"I get that, but she said she was going to see you." Lance sounded annoyed, clearly not happy with her attitude.
"She said she was coming to find me, so that means she actually did? Use your head. Can't you just call her?" Claire rolled her eyes.
"She left without her phone," Lance replied.
"So how exactly was she supposed to contact me or even know where I am?" Claire was honestly over the whole conversation. "If that's all, I'm hanging up. If you can't find her, maybe try calling the police."
She meant it as practical advice, but to Lance, it came off as cold.
"Claire, she went out just to find you. Don't you care at all if she's safe?"
Claire let out a short, cold laugh. "Why would I? Cindy and I aren't close. She's been trash-talking me all over the internet. Why should I worry about her?"
Lance couldn't accept that. “She...”
He wanted to say Cindy is your sister. Don't you care about her, even a little?
But he swallowed the words. Asking Claire that would only get him shut down. Cindy was his sister, not Claire's.
"Cindy always saw you as her big sister. Do you really have to be this heartless?" Claire just hung up. She was worried stupidity might actually be contagious. When she walked back into the lab, she looked completely normal.
“Claire, you're done for tonight. Why don't you head home and get some rest?" Barry said when he noticed her come back in.
“Sure, Barry.” Claire looked around and saw there was nothing left for her to do, so she started packing up.
Barry turned to another student. "Lawler, why don't you walk Claire out?"
Lawler didn't mind anymore. He might still be skeptical about traditional medicine but even he had to admit the professor made the right call. Ever since Claire joined, Daniel's condition had gotten better.
Claire shook her head. "It's fine. I drove myself. No need for Lawler to come with me."
