The Hockey Captain’s Unwanted Wife

Chapter 113

-OLIVIA-

Luca was against the car, hand at his mouth, blood on his teeth.

“What right do you have?” My voice came out angrier than I planned. “You hit my date for kissing me. Why would you do that?”

Roman turned on me, knuckles red. “That is not a date. That is Luca Vescari. He sleeps with girls and discards them. You know his reputation. Nico must have told you. Even if he hadn’t, everyone knows about Luca and his reputation. He uses women for his pleasure, that’s all. Nothing serious. Is that what you want? To be another name he forgets in a hotel room?”

I narrowed my eyes. “I will decide what I want. You do not decide it for me.”

He looked noticeably pissed. The polite version of him was gone. I was not used to seeing him this upset, he was usually so put together. Calm. Never this angry.

“You’re drunk.” He said it like an accusation and a fact. “You can barely stand. You are clearly not in your right mind to make decisions like this. So I will make it for you. Get inside. Get in your bed. And forget Luca the F- boy.”

I tried not to gape at him. The audacity of Roman to tell me get in my bed like I was a child who couldn’t decide for myself!

I laughed, sharply. “No.”

“Olivia.”

“Why do you even care?” I stepped in because the drinks made distance feel too far. “You made it clear you were not interested. You told me to find someone who matches me better. You brought a date to my sister’s wedding. You cannot punch a man for touching me and then send me upstairs like I am a child.”

His jaw flexed. “Just because I am not interested in being romantically involved with you does not mean I do not care about you. I have known you for years. Of course I care.”

Ouch. There it was again. He didn’t want to be romantically involved with me. I couldn’t pretend that didn’t hurt. It was so easy for him to dismiss my feelings as if they meant nothing.

I rolled my eyes. “That is not enough for me. If you cannot give me what I want, stay the hell away.”

I tried to move past him.

But suddenly, I was falling to the ground. Oh how embarrassing! This was my moment to walk off and make a statement by showing him my back! I was doing the exact opposite. Proving his point that I was in fact, too damn drunk!

His hands caught me.

One at my waist. One at my arm. I was against his chest before I could finish falling, and my heart rate

increased to the point I was sure he could feel it through the dress.

I wanted to lean in and sniff him but knew this was probably not the best time.

His fingers tightened like he had not meant to hold me that long.

“Let go,” I said, and did not move.

“You cannot even walk.”

“I can walk.”

“You can’t,” his voice lowered, rough with emotion. “You went outside with a guy who only uses women for their bodies. Clearly, you’re not thinking straight-you’re so drunk you can’t tell right from wrong. That’s why I’m here, to stop you from making a huge mistake.”

I could feel the heat on my neck. And there was the humiliating fact that being caught by him felt better than being kissed by Luca.

“Do not talk to me like you know what I feel.”

“I know exactly what you feel.” His eyes were too

dark. “That is the problem.”

What was that supposed to mean?

For a second I thought he might kiss me. For a second I wanted him to. Then he swore under his breath, bent, and lifted me.

I gasped.

He carried me like I weighed nothing, one arm under my knees, the other around my back. I grabbed his shoulder on instinct. He took me into the back entrance, away from guests, away from Luca, away from the girl he had brought. Definitely away from my brother.

“Put me down.”

“No.”

“Roman-”

“Stop talking before I say something I cannot take back.”

What could he possibly say? That I was an embarrassment? That I needed to behave?

He took the stairs without slowing.

My room door opened. He set me on the bed with a care that did not match the anger he clearly felt.

The mattress dipped. He pulled my shoes off like that was the most natural thing to do. It was not.

I stared up at him, drunk and furious and aching.

“You should not be doing this,” I whispered. “You do not get to reject me and then act like I belong to you when someone else puts their mouth on me.”

Something like pain moved through his face.

“Rest,” he said. “Do not make any more trouble tonight.”

He straightened. His hands left the blankets. The space he put between us made me suddenly so cold.

“Roman.”

He stopped at the door. Did not turn around.

“If you go back down there and finish flirting with her,” I said, “do not ever touch me again. Not even to catch

me.”

His shoulders went tight.

Then he left.

I lay on the bed with lips still tasting like a kiss I had not wanted, heart still pounding from the way he had picked me up, and I hated him for caring just enough to ruin the night and not enough to stay.
