It did not matter that I wanted to kill Luca last night for kissing her. It did not matter that I had brought a date hoping to distract myself and still kept my eyes on Olivia the entire day.
Ethan and I had been friends for ten years. I had never looked at her that way. She was always his cute little. sister.
Until she was not.
Everything changed the night I saw her being bullied at nineteen. A group of guys wanted her number. She refused. They did not take it well.
I was lucky enough to be around when it was happening.
I beat their asses that day, to the point that they all ended up in the hospital. She was crying when it was over.
Then she’d hugged me. I still remember that feeling vividly today, as if it were yesterday. Her embrace was incredibly soft, delicate, and I could feel the gentle warmth of her body through her sundress. When I held her that day, a strong sense of yearning washed over me-I truly did not want to let her go, knowing that I might never feel such yearning again.
Since then I had kept my distance.
I never once thought she had developed feelings for me. When she confessed at my party, fuck, I had wanted to lift her skirts up and push my-
I stopped myself.
I could not think about anything near her pretty pussy. Fuck me. I was getting hard again. In this house. With her brother downstairs. With her hangover and her bare legs I couldn’t stop thinking about and that gasp in the kitchen still on my mind.
Knowing she loved me made it even harder to ignore her. But was it truly love? She was still young. She could not possibly be in love with me. She probably had a little crush. I was her older brother’s best friend. I had saved her from being bullied. That was not the same as love.
But damn it.
I wanted her. I wanted her so badly it hurt to even be in the same room as her.
I sat on the edge of the guest bed and pressed my hands against my eyes until the need dulled to a headache.
It did not work. I could still hear her telling me not to touch her again if I went back downstairs and flirted with the girl I had brought to the wedding.

It had shocked me to my core that she would say that to me. I had no intention of touching her. Still, I had fucking listened.
I sent that girl home without a second thought. No explanation that would have made her less pissed. No attempt to salvage the date I had brought only as a shield.
Olivia said it, and suddenly the shield I had up became useless. I had just walked her to a car and returned to a wedding I couldn’t fully enjoy because the only person I wanted had kissed fucking Luca right in front of me, and I had to watch it happen closely. The moment I saw him flirting with her, I completely lost it. When he started leading her outside, I knew I had to follow them. Luckily, I did.
I’d never hated a man like I hated Luca last night for touching her. My reaction to another man putting his hands on her was something to be concerned about.
If I had no plans on being with her, then she was free to be with other men. It was something I’d have to learn to get used to.
Ethan’s family had welcomed me with open arms. Dinners. Holidays. Christmas.
Elena treated me like another son. The last thing I wanted to do was mess up what I had with this family, especially since my family was a fucking mess.
I could not touch Olivia.
Precious, innocent Olivia. Still looking at me like I was her safe place. I had put her to bed and taken her shoes off and walked out before I did something I could not take back. Then I spent the rest of the night hard and furious and guarding her door like a bodyguard.
I stood up. Sat down. Stood up again.
This was the part I hated most. The fight.
Wanting her and then inventing reasons I should not. She is young. She is Ethan’s sister. She does not know what she is asking for. She kissed Luca and I almost killed him because of it.
That is not the behavior of a man who has his feelings under control. That is the behavior of a man who has already lost.
I thought about her in the kitchen. Wrecked hair. Bare face. That shirt. The way she froze when Ethan mentioned the date. The gasp she could not hide. She looked embarrassed and beautiful and mine in a way I had no right to claim.
I wanted to go down the hall.
I wanted to knock. I wanted to tell her I sent the girl home because she told me to. I wanted to tell her the rejection was a lie I told to stay a decent friend. I wanted to put my mouth on hers until she forgot Luca’s
name.
I did not.
Because if I touched her in this house, I would not stop at a kiss. I knew myself. I had been fighting this since

she was nineteen and crying into my chest. Distance had been the only strategy that worked, and last night I had almost burned it down.
I dragged a hand over my jaw and stared at the door.
Off-limits.
Ethan’s sister was off-limits.
She made my arms forget they were supposed to let go the first time she ran into them. I could not make that mistake again.
I was not going to take her. It didn’t matter how much I wanted her.
Not today. Not ever.
