Chapter 181

CHARLOTTE-

I woke up to moaning.

Loud. From Luca’s room. I could not believe it. I checked the clock. Three in the morning.

When had he even invited a girl over? We had left the wedding. We had driven in silence. I had gone to bed telling myself the growl in the parking lot meant nothing.

The girl screamed. Then the slap of rough sex against the wall.

I almost screamed myself and pulled the pillow over my head, hoping the noise would stop.

It did not. Different cities. Same soundtrack. Luca having sex in the room next to me and the girl being incredibly loud. Like he had the biggest cock.

Well, I wouldn’t know, I’d never seen it.

Monaco was coming up next week. A stranger tonight. Then he was sure to pick up models there as well.

I sighed. Nothing new at all.

This had been my life for years. Since the first day I agreed to drop everything and help Luca become the best F1 driver he could be.

I had been with him from the start. Flights. Physio. Mornings after qualifying. I knew his coffee order. I knew his favorite foods. Drinks. Colors. Cars. I knew it all.

I gave up on sleep and walked out for something to drink.

I stayed there, hoping the sound of the fridge could drown out the noise.

She walked out in his jersey a few minutes later. Or it could have been an hour. I wasn’t sure how long I stayed here just staring at the fridge.

Bare legs. Smudged mouth. She looked at me like I was an intruder. Even though I would be here much longer than she ever would.

“Why are you here?” she asked. “Are you a stalker?”

I laughed. “You’re a passing cloud. He’ll have another girl by morning. I’m his best friend. Charlotte.”

She narrowed her eyes. “Oh, I pity you. You’ll always be on the sideline. You aren’t exactly that attractive either. Maybe that’s why you’re living off your best friend instead of having a man of your own.”

Living off my best friend? What gave her that impression?

“What the fuck did you just say to Charlotte?”

I froze.

Luca stood in the bedroom doorway, shirtless, furious.

e kind of anger that made a room smaller.

Oh crap.

He had heard that.

The girl tried a smile. “I was only being honest. She is standing in your kitchen at three a.m. while you have sex-”

“Get your clothes,” Luca said. “Leave my jersey. Then get out.”

She stared. “Are you serious? After what we just did? You’re kicking me out for her?”

“I would kick you out for a houseplant if it had more manners.” His voice went cold, the tone he used when someone touched something of his that he cared about. “Do not talk to Charlotte again. Do not even look at her. She has been in my life much longer than you ever will be.”

The girl gasped. “You cannot speak to me like that.”

“I just did. You’re replaceable. She isn’t. Move.”

Color flooded her face. She muttered something, then went to get her things, slamming drawers like noise

could win.

Luca did not watch her. He watched me, jaw locked, like if he looked away I might believe what she had

said.

I wanted the floor to open. I wanted him not to defend me like this, because kindness like this could be mistaken for something else.

When he got worked up over me, something stupid in my chest blossomed. Hope. Heat. The same feeling I had in the parking lot when he growled about Marco.

I could not afford that. Loving Luca Vescari when he was careless was already a full-time job. Loving him when he was protective would finish me.

“Luca,” I said quietly. “It’s fine. Let her go. Don’t-”

“It is not fine.” He did not raise his voice. That was worse. “Nobody talks to you like that in my house. Nobody.”

The suite door shut hard behind her.

Silence rushed in.

Luca looked at me.

Not sharp. Not grinning. Apologetic.

I stood there with the water glass still in my hand, trying hard to stop my heart from beating wildly because he was looking at me like that.

“You didn’t have to do that,” I said. “She was leaving anyway. I don’t need you to fight girls at three in the morning. It makes it-” I stopped.

“Makes it what?”

Makes me love you more. Makes your clothes on a stranger hurt worse because you just called me irreplaceable.

“Makes it complicated,” I said.

He dragged a hand through his hair. “I didn’t think she would talk to you like that.”

“A lot of them do. It’s the first one you caught.”

He looked surprised. I never told him about the others. None of the girls he brought over liked that he had a female living with him all the time.

He did not say sorry out loud.

He just looked at me like he should have.

I drank the water so I would not ask him why could girls like that get one night with him, but I couldn’t?

Well, to be fair, I never asked.

What would happen if I did? What would he do if I asked him for one night of sex? No strings attached.

I opened my mouth to say something but all that came out was goodnight.

Then I went back to my room and shut the door before the look on his face could become a reason I stayed.
