Chapter 189
CHARLOTTE-
I heard it through the wall.

First the laugh. Then the moans. She was loud, just like the others. It was something they all had in common. They all wanted the world to hear that Luca was having sex with them. Mind-blowing, rough, hot sex. The kind of sex that you usually only saw in movies. The kind that made you see stars.
Why? Why did I need to listen to this?
I tried not to roll my eyes as she got even louder.
Luca’s grunt answered and I felt sick.
The slapping started a minute later. Skin to skin. Rhythm. The girl screamed his name like she had practiced it. He said something but I couldn’t hear it.
I could not take it anymore.
Not tonight. Not after the hug. Not after he had looked for me first through a visor and then walked a model down our hallway like the pit wall had never happened. Like I would always be his best friend. Nothing more.
I grabbed a jacket and went out.
Marco was in the corridor like he had been waiting for someone until he saw me.
He gave me a knowing look. “Let me guess. He’s started back his routine?”
He meant the sex.
I nodded. I did not trust my voice with more than that.
Marco chuckled, clearly amused that his brother’s normal ways had just returned. “Let’s go down to the restaurant. Have a drink. By the time we’re back, the girl should be gone. That’s usually how quickly he gets rid of them.”
I considered saying no. But my only other option was going back in there and hearing them have wild sex. I shivered. I could not put myself through that torture again.
“Okay.” I agreed. “Let’s have some fun.”
The lift was quiet. I could still hear them in my head.
I folded my arms over the jacket and stared at the floor numbers like they could erase it.
The restaurant was half full of people who had been at the race.
We took a table by the window with a gorgeous view. Marco ordered wine, insisting he would be paying for everything tonight.

I ordered pasta I hoped would somehow help me to forget what I’d been forced to hear in the suite. Shouldn’t those rooms be soundproof?
“Eat,” he said. “You look like you went hours hearing them.”
“I did.”
He smiled. “He had a good win. I’m proud of him. Beautiful last lap. He drove like he needed that win today.”
“He always drives like that when he wants it too much. When he’s trying to prove a point to your father.”
Marco turned his glass. The silver of his watch caught the candle. “He is lucky. I hope he realizes it.”
I looked at the water. Yachts. “Lucky?”
“Yes.” He answered me. “You dropped everything to help him be the great driver he is today. He has you to thank for his success as much as his hard work.”
I blushed. “Thank you.”
I knew Luca appreciated me. Just not in the way I wanted him to.
The food came then.
I managed a few bites. Marco did not push. We talked about Luca how family did when they were tired of him and still on his side.
Marco ate like a man who had lost on the last lap and decided food could help with the frustration.
“Our parents will call soon,” Marco said. “A Monaco win makes them affectionate. They will want photographs. Statements. Be prepared to see my brother in a bad mood.”
I inwardly groaned. I did not want to see him in a bad mood because of them.
“We keep our distance for a reason. They love their reputation more than their sons. You have seen it.”
I had. Multiple times.
“I’m grateful he has you,” Marco said, quieter. “Someone who stays when the noise starts. Someone who is there for him when he doesn’t even realize he needs it. I wish I had that. Someone who stood by my side
no matter what.”
My throat tightened. He looked lonely. I felt sorry for him. I never truly paid attention but Marco was going through what Luca had to experience but he was doing it alone. No girlfriend. No best friend. No family really unless they wanted something.
“I’m just Charlotte. His best friend. Nothing special.”
“No,” he said. “You are not just his best friend. You are the reason he’s happy. Despite everything with our parents. You make my brother happy.”
My heart skipped a beat. I liked hearing that from someone who knew him so well.

Marco paused. “If it starts again, the noise I mean, you know where I am. You can always stay in my suite until the random girl leaves.”
I nodded. I was happy for his offer.
I hope he recognizes how lucky he is. You make him happy, that was his own brother’s words.
I bit my lip and took another sip of wine, even though I knew I really should stop. But tonight, I didn’t
want to. I just wanted to drown my frustration and do whatever I could to forget that Luca was upstairs with some other girl, fucking her, while all I could wish for was that it were me.
