I groaned. Marco didn’t want to drop the topic today. I wanted to change it but he kept bringing it back.

Why did he even want to know so badly? Was it possible he liked Charlotte and didn’t like the idea that the both of us were getting closer?

Who wouldn’t like Charlotte? She was fucking perfect in every way. She made me a very happy man. I was lucky to have her around me all the time.

I was suddenly angry at the thought of my brother having feelings for her. Why else would he keep asking me these questions?

“I’m not asking for a speech. I’m asking if you’re going to keep pretending she’s just—”

“She’s my best friend,” I said, too fast. “That is the end of the sentence. Focus on the girl in the lobby that is waiting for you before mother books a church without you and then you have no choice but to show up in a suit and say I do!”

Marco stopped walking for half a second.

Then he laughed, sharp. “You are unbelievable. I get ambushed with a fiancée and you still won’t admit you’re losing your mind over Charlotte. What are you waiting on, for someone to snatch her away? Another driver? I know you saw them looking at her in that tiny skirt she chose to wear.”

I stiffened. The thought of Charlotte with anyone else made me sick.

I still didn’t know why he was pushing this topic so hard. He usually dropped it when I asked him to.

“I’m not talking about her with you. She’s my best friend. Okay. I don’t want to lose her. Ever.”

“You don’t think you’ll lose her if another man steals her away?” he asked me.

I squeezed my temple, hard, “is there a reason you’re bringing this up now?”

“I just don’t want to see you make a mistake. I’m looking out for you.”

I turned to face him.

“Are you sure there isn’t a deeper reason that you’re trying so hard to find out if I have feelings for her?”

He frowned, “like?”

He was pissing me off. He didn’t know she liked him. And I wasn’t going to spell it out for him.

“Say another word about her and I leave you downstairs alone with Beatrice and a priest.”

Marco lifted both hands. “Fine. Fine. I won’t bring it up again. I guess I have no choice but to face Beatrice.”

“Good.” I mumbled. Still annoyed from the earlier conversation.

He sighed. Then, quieter: “You really okay? They can be overwhelming.”

“I’m fine.”

I was not thinking about their confrontation.

I was thinking about Charlotte still inside our suite. About the sentence I had started before my parents interrupted us.

I had almost told her the one night rule was already dead. That I was dying for another taste of her.

How the fuck did I go about it without sounding like an ass?

How did I tell her once was never going to be enough? How did I tell her she ruined sex with other women for me? There were so many things and I didn’t know how to confess them to her.

“Go see the disaster in the lobby,” I said, “before she books a church without you knowing it.”

Marco swore again.

“If this Beatrice is anything like Valentina,” he muttered, “I am relocating.”

“If she is anything like Valentina, I will be taping your entire reaction.”

“You would?”

“I have waited years for this.” I laughed.

He shot me a look. “You are enjoying my pain.”

“Yes.”

“At least you’re honest about that.”

“I am very honest about that.” I agreed with a grin.

We reached the lifts.

He looked at me again, and I saw the other question still sitting there. Charlotte.

I stared at the descending numbers instead.

“Not now,” I said.

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You were going to.”

“I was going to ask if you wanted me to keep them downstairs so you could go back to her.”

I swallowed.

Yes.

That was exactly what I wanted.

“No,” I said instead. “I want to meet Beatrice. I want a front row seat. I want to watch you charm your way out of an engagement our mother already announced in her head.”

Marco tipped his head back against the lift wall. “I hate you.”

“You can hate me as an engaged man.”

“I am not engaged.”

“Tell that to our mother.”

The doors opened on the lobby.

I walked out behind him, still furious, still thinking about Charlotte even though I tried to act normal in front of my brother to stop him from asking the questions I kept running from.
