Chapter 57
~BLAIR
For a second I couldn’t process what I was seeing.
I
One moment Grayson and Chase were set across the faceoff dot like any other heavy matchup. The next, Grayson’s stick was gone and Chase was on the ice, and then both of them were in a full, ugly fight.
The arena went crazy. People surged to their feet all around us. Phones shot up.
Grayson had him. Then Chase had a handful of his jersey and they were going down. A linesman tried to get in but failed.
Then I saw blood. My heart stopped beating for a second, shocked at the sight of red.
Olivia gasped beside me.
Then she stood up fully and placed her hands around her mouth before shouting, “Get him, Grayson! Hit him harder! Get his face!”
“Olivia!” I grabbed at her arm, horrified.
She looked down at me with complete innocence. “What?”
“You cannot scream ‘get his face’ with so many people recording!”
“I can when it’s Chase.” She turned straight back to the ice and yelled, “Break his nose if you have to!”
A woman two rows down snorted into her drink.
A man in a Vipers jersey spun around with pure offense on his face. Olivia offered him a sweet little wave and kept watching the fight like it was premium entertainment.
“I wonder what Chase said to him,” she said, still breathless. “Grayson doesn’t start fights for no reason. Chase definitely provoked him.”
I had a terrible feeling that it had something to do with me. Chase had been trying to do things to get my attention recently. I could not deny it. And well Grayson, he wasn’t having it.
On the ice, Callum and one of the Vipers’ big wingers finally dragged the two captains apart.
Marcus got a forearm across Grayson’s chest and shoved him backward while the officials rushed in.
I did not want Grayson to get in trouble. But it was too late for that.
Chase was still swinging for a second after the separation, face red with anger.
Grayson’s chest heaved. Was that a cut on his eyebrow? He looked past the referees once, straight up into the stands, and for a second I could have sworn his eyes found me.
Then he was being escorted toward the tunnel with a referee’s hand between his shoulders.
“Major penalties,” I heard someone say behind us.
“For a good reason!” Olivia responded. “That fight was totally necessary.”
“Olivia.” I scolded her.
“I’m just saying.” She dropped back into her seat, eyes bright. “Also, for the record, your husband looks freaking gorgeous even when he’s trying to remove another man’s head. It’s a problem. For you. Not me.”
I pressed my hands over my face for a second and then forced them down. The crowd was still losing their minds over what had just happened.
On the Southbay side, Sophie was on her feet with a frozen expression. I could tell she was also in shock. but there was definitely anger in her stance as well. Near the glass, a group of Vipers fans were screaming at the Blackridge bench. Our section answered back with shouts of their own.
Chapter 57
“Do you think it was about the score?” I asked, even though I didn’t believe it. Olivia gave me a look. “Do you truly think it was about the score?”
“No.”
V75 voucher
“Correct.” She bumped her shoulder into mine. “They are definitely fighting for you. No questions asked.”
The officials were sorting it out now with announcements. Both captains were gone from the bench. The teams realigned without them, the game restarting with a different kind of tension, without both captains. I sat forward with my hands clasped tight. Watching Grayson fight should not have done what it was doing to my body. Fear, yes. Shock, yes. But along with was a heat I didn’t wish to explore any further.
What was wrong with me?
Olivia glanced at me sideways. “You’re worried about him.”
“He was in a fight.”
“You’re worried about him but that fight totally turned you on.”
“I am not-”
“You cannot fool me sister,” she said cheerfully. “I know every expression of yours. I have an entire book on it.”
I exhaled through my nose and watched the tunnel where Grayson had disappeared.
The crowd around us slowly settled into the restarted game. But I knew that this fight would come with a lot of consequences.
Everyone had seen it. Everyone would talk about it. The clips would be online soon.
Olivia leaned close again, voice lower. “For what it’s worth, if Chase said something about you…Grayson answered. Loudly. In front of the entire building.”
That was the part I couldn’t get out of my head.
The fact that my name on Chase’s mouth might have been enough to make Grayson Shaw lose control on center ice and put his biggest rival on his back without hesitation.
I didn’t know how to feel about that.
I only knew I couldn’t look away from the tunnel, waiting for him to come back into view.
