Chapter 63

~BLAIR

The laptop screen glowed too bright in the dim bedroom.

I sat cross-legged on the new bed with headphones in and my shoulders hunched like I was committing an actual crime, searching through educational content that was neither educational nor calming. Positions. Timing. What to do with hands. What not to do with hands. What to do with my mouth. What he could do

with his.

I blushed.

Every video made me more convinced I was going to climb into this bed and perform like someone who had learned intimacy from a malfunctioning manual. Not at all someone who knew what the hell she was doing.

Another reason why I should just wait…but my body…it wanted Grayson. It didn’t know anything about waiting. Which was weird since I was never this horny for Chase.

I sighed when I saw a position that felt close to impossible for me to even consider trying.

Why did I sign myself up for this? Maybe avoiding Grayson for the rest of this marriage was a good idea.

Hocked the screen and groaned into my palms.

Pointless. All of it. No amount of muted demonstration was going to transfer skills into my body.

I was still a virgin who had spent six years with a boyfriend and still had no clue about sex, and Grayson was still Grayson-experienced, intense, still with his childhood sweetheart. They probably had sex on a daily before I entered the picture.

We were both home tonight. No game. No flight. No charity obligation. No convenient excuse. No plans

with our family.

I was very aware of how alone we were.

Would it happen tonight?

The question made me stand up, sit down, then stand again. I changed into a matching set of soft pink lingerie because if I was going to fail, I was going to do it looking good.

Then immediately I covered myself with the blanket up to my chest so none of it was visible.

When Grayson finally walked in, I bit down hard. My heart was racing and I was having a very difficult time staying still. Though, I couldn’t exactly get up and walk out of the room. Not with the lingerie I still had on. Great choice, Blair. I should have waited for the right opportunity to put this on. Now I was trapped.

He paused just inside the doorway when we both heard rain coming down on the roof.

His eyes moved over me and something unreadable crossed his face.

“You’re in here,” he said.

“It’s my room too.”

A second passed. “You’ve been avoiding me.”

“I’ve been busy.”

“Busy?”

“Busy,” I repeated, weaker.

He almost smiled. Almost. Then he set his Successfully unlocked and dragged a hand through his hair.

Outside, the rain came down heavier all at once Bould hear thunder in the distance.

My fingers tightened in the blanket.

Chapter 63

I had never liked storms. Or anything to do with thunder and lightning.

Not as a child, not now. I told myself it was fine. I was an adult, There was a roof. There was-

The next crack of thunder hit closer and the lights died with it.

Total blackness around me.

Then I heard myself make a sound I would be embarrassed about later but right now I was too scared to care. The generator should have kicked on. It didn’t. The house stayed black and, there was still more thunder happening.

“Blair-”

I didn’t register him moving until his arms closed around me.

He pulled me in against his chest so quickly that the blanket slipped, one of his hands spanning my back, the other cupping the back of my head as another round of thunder shook the windows. My scream cut off into his shirt.

“Relax,” he said near my ear. “I’m right here. There is nothing to be afraid of.”

My fingers had already fisted in his shirt. I could feel his heartbeat under them, slower than mine, annoyingly composed.

Why was he so calm? Did he not hear what was happening outside?

Lightning flashed and I tried not to scream again.

Don’t worry. It’s just lightning. Nothing to worry about. You’re inside. You’re not out there.

“The generator,” I managed.

“I’ll deal with it in a minute.” His arm tightened when the thunder came again. “Breathe.”

I tried. I could smell the rain and him. My face was hot against his collarbone.

“You’re shaking,” he said.

“I don’t like thunder.”

“I noticed.”

Another flash. Another boom. I flinched and he shifted us without letting go, sitting on the edge of the bed and pulling me with him so I ended up half in his lap, blanket tangled around my hips, his chin near my temple.

In the dark, it was much easier to hide how much my body reacted to him being this close. And the fact that I had on very little…it made it easier to feel his touches.

“Don’t worry, I have you,” he said quieter.

I nodded against him, pulse still beating wild, and held on while the rain poured on the house and the power stayed gone.

All I could keep thinking about was whether or not I should lean in and kiss him. His warm, familiar scent was all over me, intertwining with my own breath and making it difficult to focus on anything else.

Each time the thunder grew louder outside, and I instinctively leaned closer to him, feeling the reassuring pressure of his stronger embrace tighten around me, the more intense my desire to kiss him became.

I craved him. Grayson. My husband. The hockey captain I was never supposed to develop feelings for.
