Chapter 67

The other side of the bed was cold.

I reached out before I was fully awake, palm sliding across empty sheets, and the disappointment hit so fast it embarrassed me.

No warm body. No heavy arm. No Grayson. Just the dent in the pillow where his head had been and the faint scent of him still all over me.

I sat up slowly.

Why wasn’t he here?

We’d had an amazing night together. It was so freaking amazing that I didn’t regret waiting this long to finally have sex. I was happy that he was my first and not Chase. He made the waiting all worth it.

But now that he’d gotten up so early and didn’t say a single word to me, it made me believe he regretted what happened between us. Even last night, I saw a moment of real panic on his face. It was brief, and part of me wanted to believe it was nothing to worry about.

But now, in his absence, that fear was back and louder than ever.

I pulled the sheet higher over my chest and tried to talk myself out of the ache in my chest.

What had I expected? To wake up tangled together like lovers?

He’d made it clear who he was actually in love with. He’s never hidden that from me. It was always going to be his childhood sweetheart.

We weren’t anything close to lovers.

We were a forced marriage that had finally been consummated. Thanks to the thunder last night.

I bit my lip to stop the tears from falling. There was a lot on my mind now that last night was over and possibly never going to happen again.

I was clearly falling hard for him-stupidly, completely, intensely in love with him.

To him, it might have simply been sex. Intense sex. Hungry sex. And when the arrangement ended, he could still walk straight back to Lily with a clean conscience.

To me, it was nothing like that. Last night meant everything to me. He was my first. He’d made me feel things that I didn’t even think possible.

I sighed and swung my legs over the edge of the bed.

My body told a different story than the one I was trying to force into place.

A deep, sweet soreness sat between my thighs. When I stood, the sheet slipped and I caught my reflection in the mirror across the room-and froze.

Love bites.

They were everywhere.

Faint purple marks along my throat. Darker ones on my breasts. A scatter of them over my hips and the soft insides of my thighs, like he had been trying to leave proof on every place his mouth could reach.

I stepped closer to the glass, fingers lifting to a particularly obvious bruise just above my collarbone, and a helpless smile pulled at my mouth before I could stop it.

We had done it a lot of times last night even though it was my first time. Grayson acted like a man starved. Like he hadn’t had sex in years. That thought made me shiver again.

Once on the bed. Against the wall. On the floor with a pillow shoved under me.

Each time had been more intense than the last, like Grayson had started careful and then abandoned the idea of restraint completely.

He had fucked me like a man starved for me specifically and I had taken every stroke of that hunger like it was something I could keep.

I liked that.

Standing in front of the mirror with his marks on my skin and the memory of him coming inside me with nothing between us, I could still feel the exact way he had looked at me in the flashes of lightning.

Like the rest of the world had disappeared. Like Lily had briefly stopped mattering. It was dangerous to build anything on a look. It was more dangerous to build it on one night.

But my body didn’t care about the warning.

I pressed two fingers to a love bite on my breast and exhaled shakily as the night replayed in pieces-his voice cracking on my name, he had frozen when he realized I was a virgin, the groan when he pushed all the way in, the moment he lost the last of his control and filled me so deep I still felt claimed.

We had used no protection. I was hoping I didn’t have anything to worry about. Though, we were married. Would it really be so bad?

If I got pregnant. . .ugh, I didn’t want to think about that.

After taking a shower, I dressed carefully enough to hide the worst of the marks, and still caught myself smiling once in the bathroom mirror like an idiot.

He was gone when I woke up.

That had to mean something.

Or it meant nothing, and I was doing what I always did-reading too much into nothing.

I left the bedroom with my heart racing and the taste of the night still vivid enough to ruin me for the rest of the day. Or week. Possibly a month.

I bit my lip hard.

Was it possible that Grayson regretted what happened last night? I didn’t understand why he wouldn’t want to wake up next to me after what we’d done.

I only knew that waking up alone after a night like that hurt despite how good my body felt.

And if he walked back through the door right then and looked at me the way he had in the dark, I wouldn’t have the strength to pretend it was just about sex. I wouldn’t be able to deny the truth-that I loved him and could no longer picture life without him.
