Renee had barely finished her infusion when she bolted upright, ready to dash out of the hospital bed. The needle had only just been removed, and her body was still weak, but her heart was already racing toward someone else—her brother, Quinton.

"Wait for me!" Haze's voice cracked with urgency as he scrambled to his feet and chased after her. "No, you have to listen to me this time. If you don't finish this infusion, I won't tell you which ward he's in!"

Renee froze, turning to look at him with a mixture of frustration and helplessness. She knew Haze well enough to understand that he was one of the most stubborn people she had ever met. "Haze, you... you—"

"Finish the infusion first," he said firmly, crossing his arms like an immovable wall. "Then I'll take you to see him. I promise."

With no other choice, Renee sank back onto the bed with a heavy sigh, her mind still churning with worry. Every passing second felt like an eternity. She kept glancing toward the door, as if sheer willpower alone could carry her to Quinton's bedside.

The ICU wards were located in a different block of the hospital, requiring a long walk through sterile white corridors. Haze walked beside her in silence, occasionally stealing glances at her pale face. She was so fragile in this moment, so unlike the fierce, unyielding woman he had come to admire. But he knew better than to coddle her—she would hate that.

When they finally reached the ICU floor, Haze stopped her with a gentle hand on her arm. "Renee, you should know—the hospital doesn't allow family members to visit ICU patients directly. We can only stand outside and look through the glass."

Renee's shoulders sagged, but she nodded and pressed forward. As they approached the large observation window, her breath caught in her throat. There, lying motionless in a sterile hospital bed, was Quinton. His face was obscured by thick layers of bandages, and countless tubes snaked from his body to various machines that beeped and hummed in rhythmic unison. Seeing him like this—so still, so fragile—made her heart shatter into a thousand pieces.

"Quinton..." she whispered, pressing her palm against the cold glass. Tears welled up in her eyes and blurred her vision. The brother who had always been so strong, so protective, now looked so helpless.

Sensing her anguish, Haze gently placed a hand on her shoulder. "Although Quinton is still in a coma, there's good news. His facial reconstruction surgery was successful. If he wakes up, he'll be a whole new person."

Renee shook her head slowly, her eyes still fixed on Quinton's still form. "That doesn't matter anymore... I just want him to wake up safely. I want him to wake up and yell at me like he always does. I want him to lecture me about eating properly and taking care of myself. I want him to complain about my cooking. I just want him to be alive and well."

Haze studied her tear-streaked face for a long moment, realizing that appearances meant nothing to her now. Before this incident, Renee might have been devastated by the thought of her brother's handsome face being permanently scarred. But now? She only cared about his life, his health, his existence.

"Don't be so pessimistic," Haze offered, searching for the right words. Comforting others was not something he did naturally; in his world, people flattered *him*, not the other way around. Even now, his words felt stiff and clumsy. "If the doctors say that he'll recover, then he will."

Renee took a deep, shaky breath, then wiped away her tears with the back of her hand. She forced a smile onto her lips, determined not to fall apart. "Don't worry, I'll be fine. I'm stronger than you think, so you don't have to rack your brain trying to console me. I know it doesn't come naturally to you. I'll try to be more optimistic."

"Well, I guess you found me out," Haze admitted, scratching the back of his head with a sheepish chuckle. The usually confident, sharp-tongued hacker suddenly looked almost boyish. "I'm not good at consoling people. I'm afraid I'll say the wrong thing and end up making you even angrier."

Renee let out a soft, humorless laugh. "No, you did great. I appreciate everything you've done—thank you for caring so much about my brother. Doctor Cromwell is very skilled, and I'm sure Quinton will get better under his care."

A beat of silence passed between them. Then, Haze swallowed nervously, his fingers fidgeting at his sides. "Umm... since we're on the topic of appreciation... As someone who is trying to court you, have I progressed any further in winning your heart?"

Renee blinked, completely caught off guard. She frowned at him, looking genuinely perplexed. "You can't stay serious for too long, can you? How am I supposed to answer that?"

"Don't mind me—just answer honestly. I'm stronger than you think," Haze insisted, his gaze fixed intently on her face, desperate for a genuine answer.

Renee knew this man was far too sharp to accept a half-hearted response. He would see through any lie, and if she dismissed him with a joke, he would simply push harder. So after a long moment of consideration, she finally spoke.

"Well... Three percent. Yeah, three percent."

Haze's eyes went impossibly wide, practically sparkling with delight. "Three percent? I thought you'd give me a negative score! But this... this means my hard work is finally paying off. I just need to keep pushing, and eventually I'll reach a hundred percent. I don't care how long it takes—where there's a will, there's a way!"

Renee's mouth fell open, utterly stunned by his reaction. "You... you're so weird. It's just three percent! Aren't you upset? Why aren't you calling me ungrateful?"

In truth, she had been about to say zero. That was her original plan—to make him see that there was no hope for his feelings. But she knew him too well. If she said zero, he would never believe her. So she'd chosen a low number instead, thinking it would discourage him.

Instead, it had the exact opposite effect.

Haze looked positively smug, a grin spreading across his face. "Silly, three percent is very high for me. In the past, you used to beat me up every time I expressed my admiration for you. But this time? You didn't hit me. You even gave me a numerical score. That proves I have a chance, so why would I be mad? I should be celebrating!"

Renee was left in stunned, speechless silence. She genuinely couldn't understand what was so good about her that made him so obsessed. Then she thought about his nature—how his mind worked like a programmer constantly running code. Once he set his sights on a certain outcome, he would just keep running the program over and over, no matter how many bugs appeared. It was both endearing and utterly maddening.

Before she could recover from her shock, Haze's grin took on a slightly mischievous edge. "Umm... Since I managed to get three percent, can I ask for a small reward?"

Renee's eyes narrowed warily, suddenly feeling like she had walked into a trap.

As the conversation reached that precarious point, the atmosphere shifted again. Leia appeared at the door, her expression filled with relief upon seeing that Renee was conscious and stable. She rushed over, clutching Renee's hands tightly.

"Ren, you and Quinton should rest," Leia said, her voice trembling slightly. "Don't worry too much. Quinton is strong—he'll pull through. I know it."

But there was something in Leia's eyes—a shadow that hadn't been there before. Renee's instincts screamed that something was wrong. Leia was usually carefree and optimistic, always cracking jokes and lightening the mood. But now, she seemed weighed down by an invisible burden.

"Lei, is something troubling you?" Renee asked gently, her brow furrowing with concern. "Don't feel guilty about what happened. I know you suggested the surgery with only the best intentions. Please don't stress yourself out."

Leia shook her head firmly, though she wouldn't meet Renee's eyes. "No, that's not it. It's a personal matter. Take care of yourself, and wait for me to come back."

Before Renee could press further, Leia turned and fled the room, leaving only the echo of hurried footsteps in her wake.

Renee's heart grew heavy as she watched her friend disappear. "I know Lei. She must be blaming herself. I'm worried she might do something stupid."

Haze arched an eyebrow at her. "Why don't you stop worrying about others for a change and start worrying about yourself? You're so stubborn, you know that? You keep trying to carry everyone else's burdens, but who's here to carry yours?"

Most women, he reflected silently, were dependent by nature. They survived by leaning on those stronger than them. But Renee was different—she was the one everyone leaned on. She was unyielding, strong, fierce. Yet that very strength worried him. He hoped that one day she would allow herself to rely on him, to let him shoulder some of the weight she carried so silently.

For now, though, he would settle for standing beside her—even if she only gave him three percent of her heart.

Right now, however, Renee's mind was still churning with questions and fears. She replayed Leia's strange behavior in her head, trying to piece together what could possibly have her friend so shaken. Leia had always been there for her, a steady pillar of support. The thought of her doing anything reckless because of guilt was unbearable.

Haze noticed her troubled expression and sighed. "Alright, I can see you're still not convinced. But honestly, you need to focus on your own recovery first. Quinton's surgery was successful—that's already a huge step forward. And as for Leia, she's probably just going through some personal drama. Give her time."

"You're right," Renee admitted, though her heart still ached. "I'll trust her. She'll talk to me when she's ready."

"Good. Now, about that reward I mentioned earlier..." Haze grinned, clearly determined to lighten the mood.

But Renee simply rolled her eyes, grateful for the much-needed distraction. With Haze by her side, she found herself thinking that maybe, just maybe, she could find a way through even the darkest of times. There was hope, even if it was only three percent.

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

Oh, my heart is so heavy after reading this chapter! Renee's pain is so raw and visceral as she gazes at Quinton through that glass window—I could almost feel her tears through the screen. The author has masterfully interwoven the heartbreak of a sister fearing for her brother's life with the light, awkward tension of Haze's persistent affection. And Leia's sudden mysterious exit! What is going on with her? Is she about to do something drastic out of guilt?

I also loved the subtle character development here. Haze, the stoic programmer, stumbling over his attempts to console someone—it's both endearing and comical. The "three percent" exchange was genuinely funny and showed how deeply he cares for her despite her aloofness. Yet I can't shake off the impending sense of doom around Leia's mysterious errand. I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to see how this plays out, and I can't help but fear that Leia's "personal matter" is actually a ticking time bomb.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rating: 4.6 / 5 Stars

## Next Chapter Prediction

Leia's cryptic words and hasty exit are setting off alarm bells. I predict that she is secretly planning to confront the person responsible for Quinton's wreck—perhaps Dominic or someone from the Hanson family. She might be preparing to sacrifice her own safety to extract revenge or justice for what happened to Quinton. Meanwhile, with Haze's "reward" attempt cut short, we may finally see him push boundaries and confess more openly to Renee, potentially creating an even more complicated love triangle. What will happen to Leia? Will she find herself in mortal danger?
