Stefan gave a lazy, infuriating smirk. "Weren't we a couple in the past? Although I seem to have forgotten everything about you, we must have been intimate given our relationship. Don't you think you're overreacting?"
He delivered the words as if they were the most reasonable argument in the world. Renee could hardly believe what she was hearing.
"So what if we were once a couple? Does that give you permission to do whatever you want?" she snapped, drawing her knee up in a warning. Gritting her teeth, she spat, "You're going to get married! Can't you be a gentleman, at least for your fiancée's sake?"
That was the blade that cut through the tension. Stefan’s excitement died instantly. He straightened his back, and his face darkened with displeasure from being scolded.
"Why do you care so much about my relationship?" he asked, his voice growing colder.
Renee let out a shaky sigh, still holding the sheet tightly. "I'm just hoping someone can discipline you and make you stop harming others."
His jaw tightened. A bitter light flickered in his eyes as he looked at her. "But you're a mother with two kids. Didn't you do the same?"

"Did what? When did I do what you did?" she asked, baffled.
"You harmed me, didn't you?" Stefan's voice rose with frustration and a touch of real grievance. "How can you behave like that with other men if you have kids? Justin is always by your side, isn't he? Don't tell me they're his kids."
The words hung in the air like smoke, thick and impossible to breathe.
Renee stared at him, dumbfounded. For a moment, she couldn't find the words at all. Had he really become so dense? Or, worse, was he pretending he knew nothing at all? She shook her head internally, a bitter laugh caught in her throat. Clearly, the man standing in front of her had suffered something far more severe than just brain damage. This Stefan was reckless, unreasonable, and absolutely convinced of his own narrative.
Unable to tolerate another second of his maddening pestering, Renee summoned all the frustration she felt into one blunt confession.
"Yeah, they're Justin's kids," she said flatly. "If not, why would he always stay by my side? So now that you've learned about my relationship, can you stop pestering me and leave?"
She aimed those words to wound, to push him away. And judging by the stiffness that ran through Stefan's shoulders, the arrow hit its mark. His jaw clenched. His eyes searched hers for some sign of falsehood — but Renee refused to break, holding his gaze with cold defiance.
