# Chapter 289: The Shadow Beneath the Surface

Hello everyone, it’s me again! I hope you’re all doing wonderfully today. I’m so glad to be back with you, my dear readers, to continue walking through the gripping, heart-pounding journey of *The Untouchable Ex Wife*. Today’s chapter is one of those quietly tense, slow-burning moments where a single conversation in the corner of a living room can change everything. So settle in, take a deep breath, and let’s dive together into Chapter 289.

The afternoon sunlight spilled warmly into the living room, casting soft golden patterns across the floor. For a moment, everything felt peaceful—almost too peaceful. Renee sat on the couch with her children nearby, grateful for a rare pocket of calm in a life that had lately been filled with storms. But peace, she had learned, was never meant to last.

Her son, Adie, was quiet. Too quiet.

Renee noticed the way he kept frowning at the carpet, his little brows knitted together like he was trying to solve a puzzle far too big for his young mind. She reached out and gently ruffled his hair.

“What’s so strange about her?” Renee asked curiously, hoping to coax the thought out of him.

Adie looked up at her with those innocent, earnest eyes—but there was something serious beneath them. “I heard her on the phone earlier,” he said softly. “The auntie who came by. She was saying that they have to stop some kind of brain surgery by getting that person into a car crash or some accident by drowning.”

A chill ran through Renee’s spine. She kept her face calm, but inside, alarm bells were already ringing.

“It sounds like she’s going to do something bad,” Adie added.

Renee forced herself to smile. “She wants to stop a brain surgery?” she muttered more to herself than to him. Her instincts prickled with unease. Why would anyone want to stop a brain surgery? And more importantly, *whose* surgery were they trying to stop? And why would someone go so far as to cause a car crash or drown the person just to prevent it?

Her mind raced through possibilities. Every name, every face, every quiet enemy who had circled her family in recent months. None of them made her feel any safer.

But she couldn’t let Adie see her fear.

“Well, you know how some adults talk nonsense,” Renee said gently, pulling him into a hug. “Sometimes they say things they don’t really mean. Don’t worry your little head about it, okay?”

Adie looked at her, maybe not fully convinced, but he nodded anyway. Children always trust their mothers to protect them. Renee only wished she felt as confident as she pretended to be.

She didn’t ask him anything else about it. Not in front of him, not there. But deep inside, she already knew she would have to get to the bottom of this.

Before long, Margaret arrived to take the children home. Renee kissed each of them on the forehead and watched them leave, her heart swelling with love even as a heavy weight settled in her chest. She stood by the door longer than necessary, listening to the fading sound of their footsteps, and only turned when she realized she wasn’t alone anymore.

Justin was still there.

He hadn’t left with the others. Instead, he leaned against the doorway, arms crossed, his expression serious and watchful. The playful lightness he sometimes carried was completely gone now.

“You heard what Adie said, didn’t you?” Renee asked quietly, walking back into the room.

Justin nodded. Then, after a pause, he said the words she had been dreading.

“I heard that Quinton wants to leave Beach City for a while, so you have to be extra careful.”

Renee’s blood ran cold. “Quinton? Why now?”

“I don’t know,” Justin admitted. “But it’s not a coincidence. Odd things have been happening lately, and a lot of people are coveting your family.”

Renee sank into the couch, her mind spinning. Quinton leaving meant fewer people protecting her family. It meant the predators lurking in the shadows would feel bolder. It meant that whatever strange threat was gathering around her family might have just moved one step closer.

She remembered Adie’s words again. *A brain surgery.* *A car crash.* *Drowning.*

Those weren’t idle threats. They were deliberate, brutal plans. And if someone was willing to kill to stop a surgery, there was no telling what they would do to anyone else who stood in their way.

“I don’t understand what any of this means yet,” Renee whispered. “But I know it’s connected. It has to be.”

Justin sat down across from her, his jaw tight. “Then we need to figure it out before they make their move. If Quinton leaves Beach City, and if someone on the inside is working against you, this family is going to become a target.”

Renee looked at him, a fire igniting in her eyes. “No. I won’t let that happen. Whatever is coming, whoever is behind these threats—I’ll protect my children. I’ll protect this family. No matter what.”

But even as the brave words left her lips, the afternoon air felt heavy with unseen danger. Somewhere in the city, a sinister plan was already in motion. A plan aimed at stopping a surgery, silencing a life, and bringing another kind of catastrophe crashing down on the people she loved.

The sun was setting outside, but the darkness creeping around them was just beginning to wake.

**Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating:**

This chapter may not have explosions or dramatic confrontations, but that’s exactly what makes it so gripping. The tension is quiet, creeping, and deeply unsettling. Adie’s innocent words cut like a knife, and Renee’s protective instinct shines through beautifully. Justin’s warning adds another layer of dread, and the shadowy threat of Quinton’s departure leaves us breathless. You can practically feel the storm gathering around your heart. What an intense, wonderful read!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.9 / 5 Stars

**Next Chapter Prediction:**

With Quinton preparing to leave Beach City, I predict Renee will try to uncover the identity of the mysterious woman Adie overheard—and she may discover that the person scheduled for the brain surgery is someone much closer to her than she ever imagined. The next chapter might also show Renee setting a trap, using her own family as bait to draw out the conspirators, and putting herself directly in danger to expose the truth before Quinton disappears for good.
