In all his years, Santiago had met arrogant men, prideful men, and insufferable men—but Xavier? Xavier was an entirely different species altogether. Standing there in that tense moment, Santiago was convinced he had never encountered anyone more opinionated or more insufferably conceited in his entire life. It wasn't just Xavier's words that grated on his nerves; it was the way the man carried himself, as though he held the world's answers in the palm of his hand.

"Have you ever asked Lei what she wants?" Santiago shot at Xavier, his voice spiking with raw frustration. His eyes narrowed sharply as he closed the distance between them, his body buzzing with barely contained anger. "Who is the outsider here, you or me?"

The question hung in the air like a blade mid-swing. Santiago lunged forward, fully intending to snatch Leia right out of Xavier's reach. He was tired of this tug-of-war, tired of watching from the sidelines while Xavier played games with her life and her heart.

But then—a weak, trembling groan cut through the tension like a fragile thread.

"Can you two stop fighting?" Leia's voice came out as barely more than a whisper, but her words struck both men like a thunderbolt. Her face was ghostly pale, her lips drained of every trace of color, and her body swayed dangerously where she stood. "I'm dying here! Hurry up... and get me to the hospital!"

Her eyes fluttered uselessly, and before either man could react. Leia's knees buckled, and she collapsed into oblivion, her consciousness slipping away like sand through grasping fingers.

When Leia finally opened her eyes again, the first thing she registered was the antiseptic smell of a hospital room and the harsh white lights overhead. Her body felt heavy, as though weighted down by invisible chains. She slowly turned her head and found two men sitting vigilantly at her bedside—one on each side, like warring guardians keeping watch over a fragile treasure.

Xavier sat stiffly, his jaw clenched, his dark eyes unreadable but burning with something intense. Santiago leaned forward, his expression softer yet no less possessive. The air between them was so thick with tension you could have sliced it with a knife. However, as Leia lay there, taking in the reality of her surroundings, one thought eclipsed everything else:

She was alive.

"Lei, you're awake!" Santiago's entire face transformed with relief, his eyes lighting up like a child seeing the sun after a long storm. He nearly shot out of his chair. "Are you thirsty? I'll get you some water!"

But before he could even move, Xavier's cold voice cut through his enthusiasm like shards of ice. "Of course she's thirsty—she's been in a coma for two days! If you didn't talk so much, she'd be drinking water by now."

Xavier snapped the words as he smoothly handed Leia a cup of warm water, moving with an efficiency that suggested he'd prepared it the moment she stirred. Santiago bristled at the jab, shooting Xavier a glare hot enough to melt steel, but Xavier paid him no mind.

Leia, too weak to mediate yet another standoff, reached out to take the cup. But as she extended her hand, her heart seized in terror. She tried to move her right hand, to curl her fingers around the warm cup—but nothing happened. Her arm lay there, limp and lifeless, like a foreign object attached to her body.

She looked down at her hand in sheer horror. No feeling. No movement. Not even a twitch of sensation.

"My... my hand..." Her voice cracked as countless terrifying possibilities stampeded through her mind. What if the venom had seeped into her bones? What if her flesh was rotting from within? What if they had to cut it off? Her face drained of what little color remained, turning white as the hospital sheets.

Santiago, seeing her panic, immediately moved closer, his voice dropping into a gentle, soothing tone. "Don't worry, Lei. Your hand is okay." He spoke carefully, as though handling a frightened bird. "The numbness hasn't gone away because there's still venom in your body. It's just temporary—you're going to be fine."

"Oh... thank goodness..." Leia breathed out a shaky sigh, her chest loosening with immense relief. The thought of keeping her hand, of not being maimed forever, flooded her with gratitude so deep it nearly made her weep.

But then Xavier, in true Xavier fashion, chose that exact moment to complicate things.

He helped Leia take a careful sip from the cup, his movements surprisingly gentle as he tilted the water to her lips. Then, with an air of casual indifference that bordered on cruelty, he added: "Your hand could still be amputated if the venom isn't out of your system in twenty-four hours. Or if it enters your nervous system."

"Pfft!"

Leia spat the water out in a spray of panic and shock, gasping for air. Her eyes went impossibly wide as she stared at Xavier in sheer disbelief. "What... what did you say?"

She'd rather die. She'd rather literally, truly die than wake up missing a hand. How could he just say something so horrifying with such a straight face?

"Did I not make myself clear?" Xavier set the cup down and reached out, patting her head with a gesture that was equal parts affectionate and condescending. Then he huffed, his tone shifting as he scolded her like a naughty child. "You need to take care of yourself because there's still venom in your body. And that moonstone you cared so much about? Don't be so careless next time."

Honestly, people always complained that taking care of children was exhausting. But after that diving trip and this near-death ordeal, Xavier was convinced that taking care of Leia was ten times more draining. The woman had absolutely no survival instincts. She couldn't keep her distance from corals that might house poisonous creatures—and she'd gone and gotten herself bitten by an actual sea snake. What was he supposed to do with her?

Leia's eyes, however, suddenly sparked with another concern entirely. She struggled against her weak body. "Oh yeah, where's my moonstone?" Her voice was tight with worry. "I want to give it to Ren. Did you take it? Please tell me you took it—please tell me it's safe!"

Santiago held up a hand to calm her, gesturing toward a small box resting on the bedside cabinet. "Don't worry, I put it away for you," he said dotingly, his eyes soft. "Your hand will be okay after the snake venom subsides. You'll be fine."

Hearing this, Leia's anxiety eased further. She had been rushed to the hospital in time, and the doctors confirmed that most of the venom had already dispersed from her system. Only a small amount remained concentrated around the bite mark, and a surgery that would take merely an hour would be enough to flush it out completely. On the bright side, there was absolutely no need for amputation.

Leia felt her racing heart finally settle into a calmer rhythm. She took a steadying breath and turned to Santiago and Xavier, her voice small but insistent.

"Ugh... when is the surgery? I want to call Ren."

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

This chapter encapsulates everything readers love about this story—tense romantic rivalry, genuine danger, and a fierce heroine who never loses sight of what matters. Watching Xavier and Santiago literally fight over Leia's bedside while she's on death's doorstep is equal parts frustrating and endearing. Xavier's cruel joke about amputation had me gasping, but his protective scolding afterward reminded me exactly why we love him. And Santiago's constant, gentle devotion makes him such a compelling foil. Leia's determination to still secure the moonstone for Ren shows her selfless heart, even in the face of her worst fears.

I give this chapter a strong ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars.

## Next Chapter Prediction

The surgery is imminent, and that wicked venom is about to be removed—but I predict the real danger lies ahead. While Leia recovers, the distance between Xavier and Santiago will only grow more explosive. Who will she call when she finally gets that phone? More importantly, what fresh obstacle awaits her when she tries to deliver that precious moonstone to Ren? And with Xavier growing more protective, I suspect the drama is far from over—in fact, it might just be reaching its boiling point.
