When Renee opened the door of the ward, the last thing she expected was to be met with the familiar silhouette of Stefan Davenport leaning against the corridor wall. The incandescent light above him cast a long, haunting shadow across the floor, and for a moment, she froze—caught somewhere between irritation and confusion.

Her expression hardened like ice. She said nothing, and with a quiet motion, began to close the door.

"Let's have a chat," Stefan suddenly looked up and spoke, his voice hoarse and strained.

"We have nothing more to talk about," she replied in a cold flat tone.

"Then why would you open the door at this hour?" The question hung in the air between them, uncomfortably sharp, and Renee found herself momentarily speechless.

She couldn't deny it. The truth was, she had been tossing and turning restlessly on her bed. Too many thoughts, too many memories, too many unresolved feelings swirled within her chest like restless ghosts. She couldn't fall asleep. And if she didn't untangle the knot of emotions inside her, restlessness would haunt her for a very long time to come.

"Fine," she finally agreed. "Let's talk."

Together, they took the elevator up to the rooftop.

And what a breathtaking place it turned out to be. The rooftop had been transformed into a cozy cafe with an outdoor glass dome, making anyone feel as if they could reach up and touch the radiant stars above. The night sky glittered like scattered diamonds on black velvet, and a gentle breeze wrapped around them as they sat down.

Renee settled into her seat casually, tilted her head upward, and lost herself in the twinkling scene above. She remained silent for a long time.

Stefan, too, mimicked her posture, gazing upward at the same stars, and mirrored her silence. Words were unnecessary at that moment; the quiet between them cradled something fragile and precious.

There was an odd sensation in the air. They weren't the closest of people, not by any public definition. Yet sitting here, they felt like long-separated lovers, finally reunited after years apart. They could sense each other's rhythm without effort; even without speaking, they could feel each other's presence resonating deep within their hearts. Their minds, usually so guarded and battle-worn, finally found a small pocket of peace.

Stefan cherished that feeling more than words could express.

In fact, he loved everything about simply being with her like this.

After what felt like an eternity, Renee finally tore her gaze from the starry expanse above, only to accidentally meet his intense, burning eyes.

Stefan felt himself grow flustered at being caught staring. He gave an unnatural, awkward cough. "Err... You... Are you Renee?"

The question was so painfully obvious that it almost made her laugh. Renee raised a brow with mild amusement. "If not... then whom should I be?"

She studied him curiously. Something about him was certainly different from before. This man before her used to be an iceberg—cold, untouchable, emotionally frozen. But at this moment, he just seemed... silly. Awkward. Almost endearing. It was a strange transformation, and she wasn't sure what to make of it.

Sensing her gaze, Stefan turned away, trying to gather some composure. "Do you know how angry I was at you during this period of time? I kept telling myself that if I ever saw you again, I'd scold you until you begged for mercy."

"Then do you want to scold me now?" Renee asked, a hint of challenge in her voice as she turned to him.

"Are you surprised? Shouldn't I scold you?"

Stefan's jaw tightened as he recalled those painful days of waiting, the worry gnawing at his heart. His hands unconsciously clenched into fists. "What I hate the most is people who break their promises. You promised that you'd let me see you as soon as my eyes were cured, didn't you? But you... you just disappeared without even leaving a word behind. You're cruel. Heartless." A bitter laugh escaped his lips. "Of course you deserve to be scolded."

Renee lowered her gaze, nodding humbly. "It was indeed my fault. I'll apologize to you now. It's not too late to scold me if you still want to."

She braced herself, thinking back to how Jovan had already chastised her earlier. It seemed she was destined to be scolded today, no matter which man she crossed paths with. Well, her mental defenses were firmly in place. Let him vent if he needed to.

But to her surprise, Stefan's demeanor softened completely.

"I can't do that now," he admitted, his voice turning gentle. "What I can think of lately is how wonderful you were to me. How can I bear to scold you when all I want is to thank you?"

Renee blinked, struck by his sudden sincerity. A deep confusion set in. "No... that's not true. The way I treated you... was fifty-fifty at best."

The drastic change in his attitude unnerved her more than any sharp words could have. She felt exposed, vulnerable—like a fortress whose walls were melting unexpectedly.

"Is that so?" Stefan's gaze turned simple, straightforward, overbearing. Each word nudged her closer to the edge of confession. "But you stayed by my side to care for me. You risked your life to save me. And I learned that you used your own blood as a key ingredient for my medicine." His eyes pierced through her defenses, one layer at a time. "Tell me… how can that possibly be called fifty-fifty?"

Renee shifted uncomfortably, unable to form a response.

Stefan pressed forward, his voice low but unrelenting. "I have nothing else to say, but I am truly curious. Why did you treat me in such a special manner?"

The question echoed in the silent night air, demanding an answer she wasn't ready to give.

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

Oh my, what an exquisite and painful chapter! The rooftop scene felt so beautifully cinematic—two people carrying the scars of the past, finally sitting in the open, allowing vulnerability to crack through their mutual defenses. Stefan's sudden softness was heart-stopping; it's so rare to see the steely man become flustered and awkward. His quiet deepening feelings for Renee were palpable. Meanwhile, Renee's guardedness and fear at his sincerity made perfect sense; she has been burned too many times to accept kindness without suspicion.

This was a chapter filled with tender tension, unresolved longing, and emotional depth. It was poetic in its simplicity yet devastating in its implications. However, I wished the conversation could have gone longer! The cliffhanger leaves me burning with questions, especially regarding the secret behind her blood and her true motivations. Still, this chapter earns a deeply satisfying score from me.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars

## Next Chapter Prediction

Judging from the raw and intense curiosity in Stefan's eyes, Renee will find herself cornered into an explanation. Will she reveal her hidden pain, the sacrifices she made, or the dangerous secrets buried deep within her past? And more importantly—will Stefan believe her? Something tells me that this quiet night conversation will ignite a chain reaction of revelations that neither of them is truly prepared for!
