# Chapter 389: The Call That Shook Quinton

Hello everyone, it's me again! I hope you're all doing well. Today, I’ll be continuing our journey through *The Untouchable Ex Wife*, and I promise you, this chapter is full of tension, humor, and one very unexpected phone call. So please, sit back, relax, and let’s step right into Chapter 389.

Renee was caught between a rock and a hard place. Her brother Quinton had always been protective, but now he was practically sniffing around every corner of her life like a guard dog. After she had casually told him she found a good helper, the conversation had escalated into something far more serious—and, to be honest, far more annoying. Her brother's instinct had kicked in immediately. He didn't trust this mysterious helper. He suspected ulterior motives. And he demanded to interrogate the new "employee" face-to-face—or at least ear-to-ear.

That is how Renee found herself standing there, phone in hand, staring helplessly at the one man who still made her heart skip against her will. Stefan.

Renee sighed, rubbing her temples. She explained the whole dilemma to him. "You have to talk to him nicely when you call him later, Stefan. Don't expose yourself, okay?"

Stefan's lips curled into a lazy grin. He was really enjoying her discomfort. "What's the matter, master?" he asked teasingly, letting that word roll off his tongue. He knew exactly how to ruffle her feathers.

“Stop messing around. It's serious,” Renee grumbled, her cheeks heating up despite herself. She hated how easily he could fluster her. “I was on the phone with my brother, and I told him I found a good helper. Now he thinks you have ulterior motives. He wants to interrogate you. So you'd better talk to him nicely later. Don’t expose yourself, okay?”

Stefan’s amusement slowly faded. His brows knitted together. "Why do you want to keep me a secret?"

Renee’s expression complicated. For a moment, she looked like she might dodge the question, but she forced herself to be honest. "It's just better to avoid trouble. I told him long ago that I would cut myself off from you, and I’ve already broken my promise. Forget about my brother being disappointed in me—I'm disappointed in myself!" She spoke with genuine frustration, frustrated at her own weakness. She had always believed she was someone who kept her word, a person who followed her principles no matter what. But with Stefan, all her rules seemed to melt away. Again and again, he made her break the promises she had made to herself and everyone else.

Stefan, however, didn't look the least bit sorry. Instead, he tilted his head, a playful glint in his eyes. "I'm sure he can recognize my voice. How can I not expose myself?"

Renee paused. A mischievous spark flickered in her spirit. "Well, you can try to talk in a feminine voice. I'm sure he won't be able to tell... It's perfect since you're a helper too."

She wanted to fool Quinton, of course. But a small part of her just really wanted to see arrogant, powerful Stefan Hunt put on a high-pitched, sweet "helper" voice. It would be hilarious.

To her absolute shock, Stefan raised an eyebrow and agreed without argument. "Okay."

He grabbed Renee’s phone without hesitation and dialed Quinton’s number. Renee’s heart dropped into her stomach. Something felt wrong.

When Quinton answered, his voice was stern and guarded. "Hello, you're the new helper my sister hired?" He spoke in an intimidating tone, clearly planning to scare the helper off and show that he wouldn't hesitate to protect his sister. He was ready to lecture, to threaten, to shame this stranger into retreating.

But along came a response he never expected. In Stefan’s deep, clear, authoritative voice, came two words: "Yes. I'm Stefan."

Renee's entire body went stiff. Her jaw fell open. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Her eyes were wide as she stared at him, silently screaming the words she couldn't get out. *Stefan! What are you doing?!*

Quinton, too, was beyond astonished. For a long moment, he was silent, processing this sudden reveal. "What? Who... are you?" His voice wavered, but that question was merely the echo of his disbelief. He recognized full well who was on the other end of the line.

Renee finally found her breath. She elbowed Stefan, hissing, "Stefan, what... are you doing? Didn't I ask you to use a different voice? You..."

But Stefan acted as though he hadn't just thrown a bomb into a very delicate situation. Completely nonchalant, he continued speaking into the phone. “Ren is now my responsibility. Our goals are the same regardless of our past feud—we both want to protect Ren and make her happy. So... I hope you won't meddle too much in this.”

The words hung in the air like a declaration. He wasn't asking for permission. He wasn't hiding. He was drawing a line in the sand.

Quinton remained frozen in silence on the other end. The atmosphere was so tense that even Renee’s breath could have shattered it. But then, after that loaded pause, Quinton asked icily, “Are you serious this time?”

"I was always serious, but many things happened in the past, and she and I always missed each other," Stefan replied. His voice was low and sincere. There was no arrogance in it. There was only the weight of years, of words left unsaid, and of love that somehow survived all the wreckage.

"well, can you guarantee that there won't be any accidents this time?" Quinton pressed, still unwilling to soften.

Stefan answered without hesitation. "There might be, but I promise you that I'll stay with Ren forever, and we'll face any obstacles together."

Renee’s heart stuttered. Those words settled somewhere deep in her chest. But Quinton wasn’t done with his interrogation. His tone turned sharper, more pointed. "You want my sister to suffer with you?"

There it was—the million-dollar question. A challenge designed to shut down all sweet promises. Quinton had forced the vulnerable truth to the surface. Would Stefan drag Renee into the dangerous storms of his world? Would he let her share the burden of his enemies, his past, his darkness?

Renee stood frozen, watching Stefan’s face, waiting for his answer. In the silence between the phone and the beating of her heart, the entire direction of their strange, entangled fate hung in the balance.

**Reader's Impressions & Star Rating:**

Oh, this chapter had me on the edge of my seat! I can't help but love this arrogant yet deeply sincere version of Stefan. His decision to reveal himself with a simple "I'm Stefan" instead of hiding behind some silly feminine voice was exactly the kind of bold, romantic defiance that makes this novel addictive. And poor Renee—she was so sure she had him under control! Meanwhile, Quinton’s protective older brother instincts are completely relatable. That final chilling question—"You want my sister to suffer with you?"—left me desperate for more. The intense emotional battle between trust and fear, love and danger, is masterfully portrayed.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rating: 4.9 / 5 Stars

**Next Chapter Prediction:**

After that loaded question, I predict the next chapter will bring an emotional and fierce response from Stefan. He will likely prove to Quinton that although their path might not be smooth, he would rather walk through fire with Renee than live without her. Quinton may begin to soften—but just as the brothers-in-arms come to a tense understanding, I suspect a new threat will rear its ugly head, forcing Stefan to immediately protect Renee, and reminding everyone that the past is far from buried.
