The tension inside Hunt Manor was thick enough to cut with a knife, but the words that flew between the two men were sharper than any blade. Stefan's voice trembled with barely contained fury as he launched himself into the confrontation, his usual calm composure completely shattered.

"You're crazy, Jovan!" Stefan snarled, his teeth grinding together with every syllable. There was a raw, protective edge to his voice that betrayed how deeply this touched him. "You know full well how you got your eyes. She sacrificed her future so you could see again, and you'd be a horrible excuse for a human being if you tortured her like this!"

Stefan had been fighting an internal battle of his own. He had tried—God, he had really tried—to accept the situation, to see Jovan's side of things. But what man could possibly stand by while another man, who literally carried pieces of his lover's body within him, now used that very gift as a leash to hold her captive? Every passing second made Stefan's blood boil hotter. If he allowed himself to dwell on it any further, he knew with certainty that he would end up in a physical brawl with Renee's own cousin, and that was a scandal he wanted nothing to do with—no matter how satisfying it might feel.

But Jovan was not moved by Stefan's outburst. Instead, a cold, condescending sneer curled across his face. He looked at Stefan with those precious eyes—eyes that weren't truly his—and let out a mocking laugh.

"I know my eyes are hers." Jovan's voice dripped with poisonous satisfaction as he stared directly into Stefan's gaze. "You should know why she gave up her eyes to me..."

The implication hung in the air between them, heavy and damning. Jovan paused, letting the words sink in before delivering the killing blow.

"What right do you have to order me around and demand things from me since you're the one benefiting from all this? Return my eyes to me if you can then!"

The words struck Stefan like lightning striking a lone tree in an open field. Every muscle in his body locked up, his jaw clenching so hard that his teeth ached. He wanted—oh, how he wanted—to scream that he would do it. That he would give back those eyes without a second thought. But the words caught in his throat like broken glass.

He couldn't. The truth was gut-wrenching in its cruelty.

Stefan had tasted the light after years of living in suffocating, endless darkness. The thought of returning to that void, of being blind again, sent a primal terror through his very soul. But it wasn't just about him. What about Renee? What about their children? If he were to impulsively rip out his eyes and give them back to Jovan in some grand, self-righteous gesture, who would take care of Renee? Who would protect her from this unnatural fixation her own cousin had developed?

Jovan would have everything he wanted then. With Stefan weakened and incapacitated, Jovan could easily snatch Renee away and defeat Stefan without lifting a single finger. Stefan could already picture it all unfolding like a terrible prophecy.

He refused to let that happen. Never in a million years.

Stefan's hands balled into fists at his sides as he straightened his posture, trying to summon the authority of the man he used to be. His voice came out low and dangerous, like thunder rumbling in the distance.

"Listen, Jovan—Renee is your cousin-in-law. Stop these inappropriate thoughts, or we'll be fighting forever. I'm not afraid to take you down with me!"

It was a threat. A promise. A warning that carried the weight of everything Stefan was willing to destroy if pushed too far. Without waiting for a response, without giving Jovan another chance to twist his words, Stefan turned on his heel and marched out of Hunt Manor.

The night air hit his face as he stepped outside, but it did nothing to cool the fire raging inside him.

As Stefan walked toward his car, his mind churned with dark thoughts. Previously, he had actually entertained the idea of letting go of everything. He had considered handing over Hunt Enterprise, his responsibilities, his entire empire—all of it—to Jovan if it would buy peace for his family. But now he understood with terrifying clarity that such an arrangement was impossible.

Jovan wasn't aiming for Hunt Enterprise at all. He was aiming for Renee.

That changed everything. If Stefan lost that battle—the one for Renee's heart and safety—he would lose her forever. The business, the money, the power... none of it mattered if she was gone. Stefan knew, deep in his bones, that he had no choice but to fight. He would have to dig his heels into the ground and wage war against Jovan, no matter how messy or how long it took.

It was well past midnight when Stefan finally returned to Everheart Manor, his mind heavy with the weight of everything that had transpired. The mansion stood silent and imposing in the darkness, and as he entered, the dim lights of the living room revealed an unexpected figure pacing restlessly back and forth.

Leia.

Her head snapped up the moment she heard his footsteps, and her eyes narrowed into slits of pure annoyance. Her arms crossed defensively over her chest as she launched into him without mercy.

"What a busy life you have, Mr. Hunt!" Her voice dripped with sarcasm and irritation. "Don't you know what time it is? Do you remember that you have a wife and two kids? Why don't you spend the night out there instead of coming back at this hour?"

Stefan stood frozen in the doorway, taken aback by the verbal assault. It seemed that after her throat had recovered, Leia had returned to her old habit of criticizing everyone who wronged her best friend. Yes, she had once admired Stefan—she had even respected him in some distant way. But that had been long ago, before he had repeatedly let Renee down. Now, all she could see was the man who kept hurting her best friend, the man who kept making Renee cry.

What made it even more frustrating for Leia was that Renee was always spoiling Stefan. Even after everything he had done to hurt her, Renee still loved him, still protected him, still gave him chance after chance. As Renee's best friend, as the person who had watched her suffer through countless sleepless nights and rivers of tears, Leia felt a burning responsibility to stand up for her. If Renee wouldn't fight for herself, Leia would fight for her.

"Is Ren asleep?" Stefan asked gloomily, his eyes drifting toward the second floor where their bedroom presumably waited.

"It's so late. What do you think?" Leia shot back, her eyebrows rising in disbelief. How could this man just waltz in at this hour and expect everything to be fine?

"Okay, I won't disturb her since she's asleep." Stefan's words were hollow, distracted, as if his mind was somewhere else entirely. Instead of heading up the stairs to the master bedroom, his feet carried him on a different path—toward the wooden house in the garden, that little structure where Renee had once been forced to live, where so much of her pain had unfolded.

Leia's eyes widened in bewilderment. "Hey, stop!"

But her call seemed to fall on deaf ears as Stefan continued his slow, haunting march toward that place of shadows and memories.

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

This chapter delivered an intense emotional rollercoaster! Watching Stefan struggle between his love for Renee and his fear of losing her was absolutely gripping. The confrontation with Jovan exposed the cruel irony of the situation—Stefan literally sees because of Renee's sacrifice, yet his blindness to her needs has caused so much pain. And that final scene with Leia! Her protective sisterhood over Renee is both heartwarming and heartbreaking, especially seeing Stefan retreat to the wooden house instead of going to his wife. There's so much metaphorical weight in that small detail—even after everything, Stefan still can't seem to reach Renee in the place where she truly lives.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rating: 4.7 / 5 Stars

## Next Chapter Prediction

Something tells me Stefan's retreat to the wooden house is about to trigger a major reckoning. Renee might not be as asleep as everyone thinks, and if she discovers that Stefan went to the wooden house instead of their bedroom, she may finally demand answers about his strange behavior. Meanwhile, Jovan won't take Stefan's threat lying down—expect him to make a calculated, devastating move to drive a wedge between Stefan and Renee. The battle has officially begun, and the next chapter promises to be explosive when both sides start fighting for what truly matters. Get ready for some serious drama!
