Renee stood outside the prison gates with a strange knot tightening in her chest. The problem—Leia's nightmare—had been resolved, yet she hadn't lifted a single finger. It was unnatural. It felt as though a blessing had simply been dropped into her lap from a sky that never gave without taking.
The prison guard, thoroughly unimpressed by their fortunate guest, frowned at Leia and snapped, "Just leave. What's wrong? Not willing to go? Go back to that tiny corner of yours, then." He was famously rude to wealthy young ladies whose backers shielded them from justice. But Leia, who had just been handed her freedom back, could barely hear the venom in his voice.
"No, I'm willing! I… I'll go now!" She burst eagerly, as though a tornado of joy had swept away all her gloom. She didn't think twice. She changed into the clothes she wore the day she was caught, and walked straight out of that suffocating cell. Freedom tasted sweeter than any meal she had ever eaten.
When she stepped beyond the prison shadows, she looked up at the bright moon and gasped the fresh air deep into her lungs. Then, inevitably, the tears came—heavy, messy, but wonderful. She threw her arms around Renee and sobbed openly. "Ren, I'm finally free!"
"It's fine. It's okay now," Renee whispered, patting her back. "You didn't do it on purpose. You're a victim in all this too. Of course you should be released."
Hmm… that *is* true."
Leia sniffled and pulled back, her eyes shining with gratitude. "Ren, that place is more horrible than hell. No human being should ever go there. We have to stay on the right side of the law. Never, ever end up in a place like that again…"
Renee's heart skipped a beat. A cold chill crept down her spine. Because she knew—deep down in a place she rarely dared to touch—that she had killed someone. Her crime was far darker, far heavier than Leia's. She could be charged as a murderer, not serve a light sentence of three to five years, but become locked away for life. Maybe even worse. Her smile faltered for just a heartbeat.
But Leia was too relieved to notice. She wiped her tears and tilted her head in confusion. "But who helped me? If it wasn't you…" She shook her head. "I'm not popular. I don't know who else is powerful enough to get me out. Could it be my father? My brother?" Her brother was on an adventure in Antia, out of reach. Her father, after their falling-out, declared he wouldn't meddle. Neither seemed possible.
"Maybe it's a secret admirer?" Renee teased, though genuine curiosity soaked through her words. "Whoever it is, they're remarkably capable. This isn't something money alone can fix."
As if answering a dramatic cue, a sleek silver sports car pulled up by the road and honked twice. Both women turned toward the sound. The door swung open, and out stepped Xavier in all his usual charm. He leaned against the car, a persuasive glint in his eyes, and smiled like a man holding all the cards.
"Beautiful ladies, I've been waiting for you for a long time. Please, get in."
Renee and Leia exchanged a look. Surprise crossed their faces, but it didn't come out of nowhere. Xavier's feelings for Leia were never simple. Of course he would be the first to act.
"I… don't think so," Leia whispered, swallowing nervously. They had stayed friends, but barely spoke. Just ordinary acquaintances—he had no reason to go through all this trouble for her.
"Then ask him," Renee murmured, seizing Leia's arm, and marched them straight to Xavier. Without wasting breath, Renee dove right in. "Xavier, did you pull connections to get Lei out of prison?"
Xavier raised a single eyebrow and answered calmly. "I didn't use a connection. I just spent some money."
"Be serious," Renee frowned. "This couldn't be done with money alone."
Xavier shrugged, utterly nonchalant. "I transferred fifty million into the victim's family's bank account. Then I asked a few men in black to bring them fruits and knives for a friendly visit. It didn't take long before they realized their son had made his own scene and hurt himself. They went to the police and dropped everything."
He spoke as if he were buying groceries. But that grocery cost an eye-watering fifty million. Renee laughed and clapped his shoulder. "You're something else. You just throw fifty million around like it's nothing. If that isn't love, then what is?"
Leia blushed furiously, tugging at Renee's sleeve. "Ren, stop your nonsense!" She lifted her head and stiffly addressed Xavier. "Xavier… thank you. I'll do my best to return all fifty million to you."
"Just fifty million?" Xavier teased carelessly. "Do you know how much interest fifty million in a bank deposit earns each day?"
Leia's face fell. She could already see the mischief brewing. But she had the faintest flicker of softness a moment ago—and now he was ruining it.
"Fine," she said through gritted teeth. "Tell me how much I owe with bank interest. I'll pay you back within a year."
"That won't do either. You see, my family also runs high-interest businesses," he declared smoothly. "So I'll have to charge you four percent monthly interest."
"Four percent? Three percent at most even for high-interest deals! You're absolutely robbing me!"
Leia turned away in outrage. "You know what, I think I'd rather go back to prison. Getting locked up beats getting blackmailed by you!"
Xavier burst into laughter, catching her by the arm. "Alright, alright. Don't worry—you can afford the interest. Actually, all I really want is to keep you by my side."
Standing nearby, Renee watched them squabble like two children fighting over a sweet. Their bickering was laced with tenderness. Renee smiled from the bottom of her heart. Hmm. Xavier had finally learned from his past mistakes and reverted to his charming, playful self.
"Um… I just remembered I have things to do!" Renee announced suddenly, already walking off. "I'll go first!"
"Hey, Ren! Wait for me! Let me come with—" Leia tried to chase after her, but Xavier's grip kept her rooted. She could only watch her best friend climb into a taxi and vanish into the city lights.
"Did you two plan this?" Leia rounded on Xavier, shoving his hand away.
"No. It was all my doing." He slipped his hands into his pockets, a playful smile still on his lips. "You don't know how difficult that couple was. They nearly drove me mad. I hounded them for almost an entire week before they agreed to write a letter of forgiveness."
Leia's heart softened despite herself. She bit her lip, moved beyond words. "Regardless… thank you. I'll remember your kindness."
"You don't have to thank me." He offered her a meal next, hoping to wash away the prison's lingering shadow. "Let me take you out for something nice. You need some good fortune after all this bad luck."
"It's not necessary," Leia declined, smoothing her hair back—and in doing so, revealing a fresh wound near her eye.
"What happened to your eye?"
Xavier's expression changed in an instant. Gone was the playful, gentle tease, replaced by a deadly seriousness that turned the air cold around him. A menacing aura radiated from his frame, freezing the night itself. Suddenly, this wasn't about flirting or flying interest anymore. Someone had dared to hurt his Leia.
And he was already imagining exactly what that someone deserved.

Oh, this chapter was an absolute rollercoaster of warm feelings and icy chills! Seeing Leia released and Renee's quiet guilt added touching depth to the scene. Xavier, as always, proved equal parts infuriating and swoon-worthy—one glance at Leia's wound revealing the fierce protector beneath the joking exterior. The balance between playful romance and sudden darkness made my heart race. I loved every second of it.
