Leia's voice had been steady when she told Xavier she was leaving, but inside, her heart was crumbling into a thousand pieces. She had spoken firmly because deep down, she knew that if either of them hesitated, they would both end up drowning in regrets they could never take back. So she turned, walked out of that apartment, and didn't look back.
The elevator doors slid shut, sealing her fate, and Leia wasn't the least bit surprised to find that Xavier hadn't chased after her. Of course he hadn't. Why would he? She was just a temporary distraction, a placeholder in his life until the woman he truly loved returned to claim her rightful place.
Her lips curled in disgust as she stepped out of the building, and she furiously wiped away the tears that threatened to spill down her cheeks. "Ugh, all men are pigs! There's no end to their greed!"
The words hung in the air like a bitter curse, but they didn't make her feel any better. She felt as though she were sinking into an abyss so deep and dark that she might never claw her way back out. Every step she took felt heavier than the last, as if the weight of her broken heart was dragging her down into the cold, unforgiving earth.
Come to think of it, she was probably cursed. Cursed to only ever experience one-sided loves. First William Jones, the man who had shattered her heart and left her to pick up the pieces. Now Xavier Stuart, who had made her feel alive for just a moment — only to reveal that she was merely a rebound, fated to return to the sidelines the moment the actual love interest walked back into the picture.
It was tragic. Downright tragic.
Leia couldn't help but wonder: Was this her fate? Had the universe conspired against her from the very beginning, ensuring that she would never find lasting love? If that was the case, then maybe she should just swear off love entirely. Devote herself to her work, to her pawnshop, to anything that didn't involve the risk of having her heart ripped out and stomped on again.
She made her way back to Carmine Pawnshop, cutting a miserable figure as she trudged through the streets. Her shoulders were slumped, her eyes were red-rimmed, and her entire being radiated an aura of defeat that even the brightest sunlight couldn't penetrate.
But when she stepped through the front door, something utterly unexpected happened.
*POP!*
Confetti burst overhead like a celebration of fireworks, showering down upon her in a colorful rain of sparkles and streamers.
"Welcome back, Miss Osborne!"
Chase was there, holding a saucer of olive oil like some kind of ancient ritual offering, ready to anoint her and banish any bad luck that might be clinging to her. Meanwhile, Renee was unleashing party poppers left and right, filling the air with pops and bursts of celebration. They had clearly been waiting for her for quite some time, and they were determined to give her the welcome home she deserved.
"It's been hard on you, Leia!" Renee's eyes were puffy — she had obviously been crying — but she opened her arms wide and wrapped Leia in a warm, enveloping bear hug. Then, her eyes gleaming with barely contained excitement, she whispered conspiratorially, "So? How did it go last night? Did you manage to seal the deal?"
The chemistry between Leia and Xavier had been absolutely electric last night — anyone with eyes could see that. Renee had been convinced that it was simply a matter of time before those two finally admitted their feelings for each other. After everything they had been through, all the bad luck and misfortune that had plagued their lives recently, Renee would have been overjoyed if Leia had finally found love.
But the moment those words left Renee's mouth, Leia's expression hardened into something cold and impenetrable.
"Renee, don't mention that name around me ever again if you consider me your friend," Leia said, her tone carrying an uncharacteristic grimness that made everyone in the room freeze. "Or it's over between us."
The message was clear. Whatever had happened between Leia and Xavier, it had been devastating enough to make her want to erase every trace of him from her life entirely. She had been hurt terribly — that was obvious — and it was only natural that she wanted to distance herself from anything and everything related to that man.
Renee's curiosity was overwhelming. She wanted nothing more than to demand answers, to shake Leia and ask what in the world had happened to cause such pain. But she held her tongue. Some wounds were too fresh to poke at, and some questions were better left unasked.
"Alright then," Renee said softly, forcing a smile. "As long as you're home, that's all that matters."
Inwardly, though, Renee was cursing Xavier Stuart with every name she could think of. What on earth had he done to hurt Leia so badly? What could possibly justify the anguish etched so deeply into her friend's face?
But Leia didn't want to talk about it. She didn't want to think about it. All she wanted was to distract herself from the gaping hole in her chest — and what better way to do that than through the glorious comfort of food?
What followed was nothing short of a feast worthy of a queen recovering from heartbreak. Half a watermelon disappeared in minutes. Two mangoes were devoured with almost violent enthusiasm. Three packs of cherries vanished one by one. Dozens of grilled skewers were consumed with reckless abandon. And a pot of stewed mutton simmered on the stove, its rich aroma filling the pawnshop and wrapping around Leia like a warm embrace.
By the time she had finished, Leia let out a burp of pure satisfaction and slammed her hand on the table with renewed determination. "Men are all just condiments!" she declared loudly. "They're nowhere near as delightful as a good meal, so getting sad over them would just be bringing myself unnecessary grief!"
"Exactly!" Renee echoed enthusiastically, raising her glass. "They are just condiments! They're nice sometimes, but they're not a necessity!"
"Cheers!" Both women exclaimed in unison, clinking their glasses together with such force that the liquid nearly sloshed over the rims.
But as the evening wore on, something unexpected happened. Renee had originally come to Leia's side to serve as her chaperone, her support system — someone to help her through this difficult time. But as the alcohol began to flow and the night grew longer, Renee's own sorrow began to bubble up to the surface.
Through tears and snot, her voice cracking with emotion, Renee began to pour her heart out. "I'm telling you, Leia, Xavier isn't that bad... When it comes to people like Stefan Hurt, you'll wonder why you're even alive..."
Leia's ears perked up. Stefan Hurt? Renee had never spoken much about her husband before, but now the dam had burst wide open.
"Did you know he completely forgot about me?" Renee continued, her words tumbling out in a rush of pain and frustration. "He'd even be lovey-dovey with Seraphina right in front of me! I'm supposed to be his wife, but I feel like the other woman now!"
She choked on a sob, wiping furiously at her streaming eyes. "Do you know how much that hurts? To watch the man who's supposed to love you shower another woman with affection while you stand there invisible? To be married yet feel completely alone? To be the wife but treated like the mistress?"
The room fell silent save for Renee's quiet sobbing. Leia reached out and took her friend's hand, squeezing it gently. Perhaps she had been so consumed by her own pain that she had failed to notice that Renee was drowning in her own.
Two women, both betrayed by love. Two hearts, both shattered by men who couldn't see their worth. Two friends, bound together by shared pain and the desperate hope that somehow, someday, things would get better.
They raised their glasses once more, this time with tears streaming down both their faces.
"To being alone together," Leia said quietly.
"To being alone together," Renee echoed.
And in that moment, surrounded by empty plates, discarded cherry pits, and the warm glow of friendship, they found a small measure of comfort — knowing that at least they didn't have to suffer alone.

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating
Oh, what a heart-wrenching chapter! My heart absolutely broke for both Leia and Renee. The contrast between Leia's devastating breakup with Xavier and the surprisingly touching celebration waiting for her at the pawnshop was beautifully written. I loved seeing the depth of friendship between Leia and Renee — two women supporting each other through the wreckage of their love lives. The scene where they drunkenly commiserate over their terrible husbands and love interests was both hilarious and heartbreaking. You can really feel Leia's raw pain, but also her determination to move forward. And Renee's confession about Stefan adds a whole new layer of complexity to her character that makes me want to know more! The food binge scene was wonderfully relatable, and the message that friendship can heal what romance breaks is beautifully conveyed.
⭐️⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars
## Next Chapter Prediction
After this emotional heart-to-heart between Leia and Renee, I predict that the next chapter will see these two wounded women forming a powerful alliance. Given that Renee has revealed the extent of Stefan's betrayal — publicly flaunting his relationship with Seraphina right in front of her — I suspect Renee might be ready to take drastic action. Perhaps she'll team up with Leia to confront their respective love interests, or maybe even seek revenge on the people who have wronged them. Meanwhile, I wouldn't be surprised if Xavier starts to regret letting Leia walk away, especially once he realizes that his feelings for her were deeper than he admitted. And what about Stefan? If he discovers Renee's growing resentment, he might try to reel her back in... but it could be too late. Get ready for more drama, more heartbreak, and possibly some much-deserved payback!
