Elijah had barely finished speaking before he realized he had stepped right into a minefield. One careless sentence, and Stefan’s entire aura turned ice-cold.

“Ah, did you say that? You just ordered me to come pick you up,” Elijah tried to defend himself, his voice shrill with nervousness as he sensed the murderous aura radiating from Stefan.

But Stefan was done with games. He closed his eyes, his jaw tight, his fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white. Through gritted teeth, he bit out, “Have I made myself clear now? I’m going to Renee!”

Elijah blinked, then a sly, knowing smile crept across his face. “Oh, you want to see Miss Everheart. What a surprise! I’m sure you have different feelings for her.” He deliberately dragged out every word, enjoying the discomfort running through Stefan like a live wire. “Well, you should have told me earlier... She’s staying in the same hospital as you.”

The implication was as obvious as a slap to the face: Renee was right there, within reach, and Stefan had spent all that time pretending he didn’t care.

Stefan’s response was immediate and violent — a sharp whack against Elijah.

“You’re losing your mind. Don’t you have enough on your plate? I don’t mind giving you more work!” Stefan shot him a cold glare, his voice dripping with menace.

Elijah rubbed his sore arm, grinning like a cat that got the cream. “It’s alright, I have enough work. I’ll take you to her now.”

He parked the car and opened the door for Stefan, and the two men walked into the hospital. Neither of them spoke, but the tension was heavy enough to suffocate the air. Strange, isn’t it? Stefan had been unwilling to admit where his heart truly belonged. But when the news of Renee’s injury reached him, every carefully erected wall crumbled like sand against a wave.

It turned out that Renee had indeed sprained her waist. She had been rushed quickly to the orthopedics department — which just so happened to be on the same floor where Stefan was being admitted. After all his aimless wandering, all his emotional chaos, Stefan had somehow ended up right back where he started: near Renee.

Life has a cruel sense of irony, doesn’t it? No matter how far you try to run, the person who owns your heart is never truly far away.

When they reached the ward, however, Stefan’s steps faltered.

A crowd of Renee’s relatives and friends had gathered inside. Leia was there. Justin was there. Countless familiar faces buzzed around her room like protective fireflies. Everyone who loved her had rushed to her bedside the moment the news spread.

And because of that, Stefan couldn’t get close to her.

His pride wouldn’t allow it. He wasn’t thick-skinned enough to approach her under such circumstances, especially after everything that had happened between them. So there he stood, the man who had fought through boardrooms and negotiations, stranded outside a hospital room like a lost traveler at a locked gate.

Just then, a nurse stepped out of the ward. Stefan shot Elijah a meaningful look. Elijah, ever sharp, immediately understood his silent order.

Elijah moved forward and caught up to the nurse, pulling her gently to a corner. “Miss, I would like to ask you something. How is the patient in that ward?”

The nurse looked at them cautiously, suspicion flashing in her eyes. “Who are you two? Are you her family? If you’re not, I can’t tell you anything because our patients’ information is strictly confidential.”

“Yes, we’re her family. Mr. Hunt here is the patient’s husband,” Elijah said, his tone brimming with false confidence.

“Husband?” The nurse scrutinized Stefan incredulously, her gaze flickering between him and the closed door. “Why didn’t you go in if you were her husband? You’re hiding here in the dark like a creep.”

Ah, that stung. Stefan’s face darkened, and Elijah immediately tried to smooth things over. “Why are you so stubborn? Just answer our question. You…” Stefan massaged his temples and sighed exasperatedly. He was a man accustomed to commanding rooms, yet here he was, helplessly tangled in an argument with a hospital nurse.

He pulled Elijah aside before the man could worsen the situation. Then, recomposing himself, Stefan turned to the nurse with an earnest, surprisingly vulnerable expression.

“Yes, I’m her husband, but we got into a fight... and I was too cowardly to go see her. But I’m very worried about her, so... Can you tell me how she is?”

Maybe it was the sincerity in his voice. Maybe it was the vulnerability he rarely ever showed to anyone. Or perhaps it was just his handsome face pleading for softness. Whatever it was, the nurse’s expression softened.

“Umm... sure,” she gave in. A brief pause, then she delivered the verdict.

“The patient is out of danger now, but her waist is seriously hurt. She needs to rest for two to four weeks, and she’ll be fine if she recovers well. If not...”

She didn’t finish the sentence. She didn’t need to.

That dangling “if not” hung in the air like a sword above Stefan’s heart. If she doesn’t recover well... what? What would happen to her? Would she suffer chronic pain? Would she lose the freedom of a normal life? Would she—No, he couldn’t think that way.

For the first time in a long time, Stefan Hunt — the powerful, unshakable force of a man — felt utterly powerless. All he could do was stand there, hidden in the shadows, watching the woman he still cared for lie injured in a hospital bed while others tended to her. He couldn’t comfort her. He couldn’t hold her hand. He couldn’t be the one she looked at when she woke up because his own pride had built walls higher than his love could climb.

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

Oh, this chapter is a beautifully agonizing look at Stefan’s internal conflicted heart. He cannot stay away from Renee no matter how hard he tries, yet he also cannot face her because of his pride and the distance he himself created. There's something touching about watching him reduce to a "cowardly husband" just to get news about her — it proves that his feelings are far from gone. That unfinished threat of "if not" also adds a delicious layer of tension that keeps us on edge. I truly enjoyed seeing the usually composed Stefan so emotionally unglued. It feels raw, real, and deeply human.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars

## Next Chapter Prediction

Given this dense emotional buildup, I predict Stefan will find a way to visit Renee privately soon — likely when the crowd clears or by some unexpected encounter. His worry and love will finally push him past his pride, but Renee may not be ready to forgive or accept him. More importantly, that lingering warning about her waist might foreshadow future complications — perhaps Renee's injury becomes worse than expected, forcing Stefan to step in as her protector whether Renee wants it or not.
