The underwater world had been calm, blue, and full of promise. Sunlight filtered through the water, painting golden patterns on the sandy seabed. Leia, with her adventurous spirit running wild, had been exploring every crevice, every shadow, her eyes gleaming with the delight of discovery. That was, until her fingers closed around something extraordinary—a rare moonstone, glowing faintly like a piece of the moon had fallen from the sky and chosen to rest in her palm.

But the sea never gives away its treasures for free.

Before Leia could even celebrate, a sharp pain pierced her skin. She flinched, pulling her hand back. She thought it was just an insect, something harmless, something easily dismissed. But Xavier knew better. He had seen the flick of a dark, slender body in the water. A krait. Venomous. Deadly. In an instant, his fury at Leia's carelessness warred with the terror gripping his heart.

There was no time to scold her, no time to argue. Xavier grabbed Leia by the waist and kicked hard for the surface, his every muscle straining as the water resisted them. Santiago and Skylar, sensing something had gone horribly wrong, followed close behind.

The moment they broke through the surface, Xavier’s voice tore across the beach like a thunderclap.

“I need help! Get a speedboat to send her to the hospital!” His face was ashen as he shouted at Billy, who stood frozen on the shore.

Santiago swam quickly to Leia, worry carved deep into his features. “What happened?”

Leia, still blissfully unaware of the danger, gave an embarrassed little shrug. “Ugh, it’s nothing. An insect bit me...” She held out the mark on her skin, almost annoyed by all the fuss. After all, she felt perfectly fine. She hadn’t even considered that venom could be creeping through her veins even now, silent, patient, merciless.

Before the men could argue, Leia lifted the moonstone high above her head with triumph, a sparkling prize meant to be shown off to everyone on the beach.

“Look! I found a moonstone... I..” Her voice faltered.

Her vision began to blur at the edges. Her fingers tingled, then went strangely, terrifyingly numb. “What’s going on? ... I can’t feel my hand,” Leia whimpered, and this time, true panic flickered in her eyes.

“Oh, now you’re scared! It’s the snake venom,” Xavier snapped, already tearing off his diving suit. Without hesitation, he scooped Leia into his arms, cradling her trembling body against his chest.

Santiago’s blood turned cold at the words. “Snake venom?” He followed closely, his entire body tensing. “Lei was bitten by a snake? Didn’t I ask you to take care of her? What did you do? I wouldn’t have given you the opportunity if I knew you were so unreliable!”

Regret burned in Santiago’s chest. He had trusted Xavier to keep her safe underwater. He had believed that Xavier—despite everything—could be counted on. Now, because of that mistake, Leia was paying the price.

Xavier stopped dead in his tracks. Slowly, he turned around, his eyes blazing with dangerous fire. “Who do you think you are? What right do you have to speak to me like that? Leia is my woman, and I’ll handle it if anything happens to her. I don’t need an outsider like you to judge me.”

Santiago’s eyes narrowed into sharp, cold slits. “Outsider?”

The word grated against every nerve in his body. To Santiago, Xavier was the most arrogant, opinionated man he had ever met—a man who thought the world revolved around him. But did he ever stop to consider what Leia herself wanted?

“Have you ever asked Lei what she wants?” Santiago challenged, stepping closer, his tone heavy with accusation. “Who is the outsider here, you or me?”

The air between them crackled with tension. Santiago moved angrily toward Xavier, his hands raised as if he intended to pull Leia from Xavier’s arms by force.

But Leia, pale and weakening, could only look at them in despair. Her lips trembled, and her voice came out as a strained, pitiful groan. “Can you two stop fighting? I’m dying here! Hurry up... and get me to the hospital!”

Before either man could respond, her eyes fluttered closed, and her body went limp in Xavier’s arms.

When Leia finally opened her eyes again, the world came back in pieces. White ceiling. Sterile smell. The soft hum of hospital machines. She was alive. That much was clear.

She blinked slowly and turned her head to find Xavier and Santiago sitting on opposite sides of her bed, like two stone statues guarding her from each other. The atmosphere between them was so thick and tense, you could have sliced it with a scalpel.

“Lei, you’re awake! Are you thirsty? I’ll get you some water,” Santiago said, his eyes lighting up the instant he noticed her conscious.

“Of course she’s thirsty, she’s been in a coma for two days!” Xavier snapped, rising to his feet. “If you didn’t talk so much, she’d be drinking water by now.” He reached for a cup of warm water and held it out to Leia, his expression both concerned and irritated.

Leia wanted to reach out and take the cup. She really did. But when she tried to move her right hand, nothing happened.

Her breath hitched. Her heart began to pound. She looked down at her hand in utter horror, trying to wiggle her fingers, to squeeze them, to feel anything at all. But there was nothing. Just a lifeless, unresponsive weight at the end of her arm.

“My... My hand...”

Horrible possibilities flooded her mind. What if the venom had seeped into her bones? What if her hand was permanently ruined? What if the doctors had no choice but to amputate? Her face turned pale as the sheets beneath her.

“Don’t worry, your hand is okay,” Santiago said quickly, his voice soft and reassuring. He leaned closer, gentle and earnest. “The numbness hasn’t gone away because there’s still venom in your system. The doctors are treating you. You’re going to be fine.”

Leia exhaled shakily, but the fear in her eyes hadn’t fully faded. She was still trapped in the fragile space between relief and dread.

And with Xavier and Santiago glaring at each other from across her hospital bed, she knew that her recovery would be anything but quiet.

What a heart-pounding chapter! The ocean adventure turned into a near-tragedy in the blink of an eye, and watching Xavier and Santiago clash while Leia lay helpless between them was both thrilling and heartbreaking. I love how the danger of the snake bite wasn’t the only threat—the emotional battle between these two possessive men added another layer of intensity. Leia’s vulnerability was so tangible, and her panic when she realized she couldn’t move her hand gave me chills. This chapter masterfully balanced action, tension, and raw emotion. I'm completely hooked!

# Next Chapter Prediction

With Leia still recovering and venom lingering in her body, the next chapter will likely bring an intense competition between Xavier and Santiago over who gets to stay by her side. But beneath that rivalry, a deeper question is rising: when Leia finally regains full use of her hand, which man will her heart choose—and will one of them take desperate action to win her before she makes that decision?
