Renee rolled her eyes at Liam's teasing, pretending to be completely absorbed in the trending topics on her phone. But beneath her calm and carefree exterior, her mind was churning with worry. Liam had just revealed some painful truths about her older brother, Quinton. Actually, no—not just painful truths. He had exposed the ugly, festering wound at the very core of her brother's shattered soul.

"My older brother doesn't only hate Stefan for destroying his face," Renee explained, her tone becoming low and heavy. "He hates him for making his most trusted person betray him too. That woman... she used to be the light of his life. But she turned her back on him for Stefan. She betrayed him and stabbed him right in the gut."

Liam listened quietly, his usually playful expression clouding over with understanding. "That's when your brother lost all his morality. And well... how do I say this? He takes things to the extreme now."

"Yeah, he is pretty extreme," Liam agreed with a solemn nod. A strange, knowing look flickered across his face. "No wonder I felt a sense of empathy when I first saw him. I recognized that he had been hurt the same way I had—for love."

Renee rolled her eyes again. "For love? Since when? Oh, stop being so dramatic—"

"Is it not miserable enough that I acted as a loyal lapdog for almost a decade," Liam cut her off, his voice suddenly cracking with raw emotion, "with no one to love me back?"

The woman was speechless. For all his jokes and playful antics, Liam carried wounds of his own—deep ones that he rarely let anyone see.

"You might not know this, Boss," he continued, his voice softer now, "but people who have suffered from love trauma have piercing eyes. And Quinton is exactly that."

Renee didn't want to pay him any more mind, because he was being as playful as ever. But deep down, she knew that there was some truth in his words. Quinton always expressed love in a twisted and sinister way—as if his heart had been corroded halfway to nothing by betrayal. Her brother was drowning in resentment, and if she didn't take action soon to help ease that anger... she feared something terrible would happen.

As Renee mindlessly scrolled through the trending topics, her eyes suddenly caught on a photograph. It was a beautiful girl sitting on a beach, barefoot, with silky black hair cascading around her shoulders. There was something ethereal about her, something fresh and innocent, like a true princess from a fairy tale. The user who had posted the photo had written a surprising caption:

**[This is the love of the Night Demon's life!]**

Renee's heart skipped a beat. "Could she be Joanne Garcia?"

She held her breath, excitement coursing through her veins as she zoomed in on the picture, examining every detail. The more she looked at this woman, the more she understood her brother. After depending on each other for so long, the betrayal of this beautiful princess must have been absolutely devastating. No wonder Quinton's heart had turned so cold and cruel. If she were in his shoes, she would have wanted to burn the whole world down too.

"If I were Quinton," Renee muttered to herself, "I wouldn't just hold resentment against Stefan. I'd be willing to kill off the entire world out of heartache!"

"Joanne?" Liam's voice suddenly broke through her thoughts. He was holding a cup of coffee, but the moment he caught sight of the photograph on Renee's screen, his body went rigid. His eyes widened in recognition.

"Why? Do you recognize her?" Renee demanded, her heart beginning to race.

"Of course I do!" Liam's voice rose to a high-pitched exclamation. He was completely stunned, staring at that familiar face. "When I was on a trip to Cyndiano, I was tricked into selling my body in some red light district! Since I didn't obey, they almost took my life! Joanne was the one who saved me!"

Renee grabbed him by the shoulders, suddenly intense. "What... did you say? Look carefully, is this really her? Are you absolutely sure she is Joanne?"

"Yeah, but we all call her Jo," Liam said, his brow furrowing as he studied the image. "She looks very different now, though. It's like she's a completely different person from this photo."

"Where is she now? Quick, let's head out right now. I have to get her back!" Renee jumped up, practically vibrating with excitement and determination. If she could find Joanne and bring her back, maybe—just maybe—she could heal her brother's broken heart and bring him back from the darkness that had consumed him.

But Liam's face had gone pale. He was physically cowering at the very thought. "It's best if you forget it," he said, his voice trembling. "My master is very powerful. And I mean, very powerful. At the time, he practically forced me into becoming his godson and taught me so many skills. So I was able to witness his terrifying power first-hand. That only made me more certain that I needed to escape. And now you're trying to take his princess away from him..." Liam shook his head, shrinking back as if the mere memory of his master could kill him. "At the very least, I wouldn't dare to go back anymore."

"Then don't," Renee said firmly, without hesitation. "I'll go myself. Give me the address."

She didn't want to put Liam in a difficult position. Besides, she was completely confident in her own abilities. With her martial skills and agility, she could handle one rescue mission easily. She had faced far more dangerous situations before—and she had survived them all.

"Hell no." Liam refused, putting his index fingers into the shape of an 'X' in front of his face. His voice was desperate. "I can't even handle being there, and I play around a lot! You're a girl and a beautiful one at that! Who knows what would happen when you're there! I won't let you risk your life!"

"I heard it's a pretty hellish place," Renee said nonchalantly. "Even a beast would be left with scars all over its body. But don't you know me? When have I, Renee Everheart, ever been scared of anyone?"

"I know you're strong, but you need to know that there are stronger people out there," Liam pleaded, his eyes wide with genuine fear. "My master is no joke! I almost made him explode when I refused to be his godson and escaped! He might imprison you and make you his concubine if you went there!"

"Shut it with the nonsense," Renee snapped, her patience completely depleted. "Hand me the address!"

When Liam still refused, Renee moved with lightning speed. She grabbed the man's arms and twisted them painfully behind his back. For someone who looked so delicate and graceful, Renee was incredibly skilled when it came to punishments. She increased the pressure with every passing second, her grip unyielding and merciless.

"Ow ow ow!" Liam couldn't take it anymore. Tears of pain welled up in his eyes as he finally broke. "Fine, fine, fine! But I'll go with you. He's my master, after all. I'm sure he won't cross the line if I'm there."

Renee hesitated for a moment, considering his offer. Then she nodded. "Okay, you can come. No one can lay a finger on you with me around."

But before she could go charging after this mysterious Joanne, Renee had somewhere else she needed to be first. The internet was still ablaze with hatred toward Stefan. The scandal had taken over every single trending topic, and H Group's share prices were crashing hard. Paparazzi swarmed their headquarters every single day, waiting like vultures for any scrap of drama they could find. The whole situation was spiraling out of control.

Meanwhile, Stefan Hunt sat in his large, luxurious office at the top of the H Group tower. He massaged his temples, exhaustion and frustration etched deep into his handsome features. He had never expected this grudge from five years ago to be dug up and thrown into the public eye. Now he was the target of everyone's hatred and scorn.

Thinking back on his feud with Quinton, Stefan knew that he had indeed been too brutal back then. He had only acted out of circumstance—he had just taken over the company, and everyone around him was watching his every move, waiting for him to fail. His own family was unhappy that he had inherited control of H Group, and so were the employees. The only person they trusted was his brother, Tristan.

As a young and reckless man eager to make a name for himself, Stefan had decided to negotiate business at Water Dock. At that time, Water Dock was overrun by the Carmine Pawnshop. The resulting rivalry between the two organizations was endless, locked in a stalemate. That was, until a key figure appeared—someone who would change everything forever.

Stefan shook his head to clear the dark memories. There was no point dwelling on the past now. He had more pressing problems to deal with.

"Mr. Hunt, someone is requesting an audience with you," his secretary said as she knocked on the door, speaking in a respectful and careful tone.

"It's probably those annoying reporters again, isn't it? Tell them I'm not seeing anyone!" Stefan barked, visibly annoyed. The journalists had been relentless, and his patience had long since worn thin. He simply never expected any of this information to have been leaked, let alone in such a touching, romanticized article. With the situation spiraling so quickly, he honestly didn't have a clue how to handle it right now.

"But... the person requesting an audience is... the ex-Mrs. Hunt," the secretary added hesitantly.

Stefan's expression visibly softened. Without a moment's hesitation, he quickly said, "Let her in."

"Alright, Mr. Hunt," the secretary said, nodding as she stepped out. Inwardly, she couldn't help but sigh to herself. Mr. Hunt sure has a double standard! How adorable! He'd been barking at everyone all day, but the moment Renee's name came up, he turned into a completely different man.

When Renee walked into Stefan's office, led by the secretary, she felt a wave of nostalgia wash over her. It had been so long since she had last been here, but everything was still the same... except for the man standing opposite her. Renee stared at him, and sadness flooded her heart despite her resolve. He was standing in front of the large French windows just as he always used to, his back as straight and proud as an arrow.

"What are you doing here?" Stefan turned around and shot Renee a cold glare. His voice was hostile, his entire posture unwelcoming. It was as if her very presence irritated him.

The secretary glanced nervously between them, then suggested hesitantly, "Mr. Hunt, I can show Miss Everheart around if you're too busy. We can come back after you've finished your work."

Inwardly, the secretary was grumbling. *Why is Mr. Hunt behaving like this? They've been married for a long time, but he doesn't show his true feelings for her at all. He deserves it if Mrs. Hunt runs away!*

Stefan's face turned absolutely livid. He turned to his secretary and growled, "Get out."

"I apologize for intruding," Renee said, bowing her head slightly as she turned around to leave. If he was going to be hostile, she didn't see any point in staying.

Stefan's eyes hardened to steel as he gritted his teeth and snapped, "I asked HER to leave. YOU stay."

The secretary barely managed to hold back her laughter as she walked out of the president's office. "Okay, I won't disturb you and Miss Everheart," she said sweetly, gently closing the door behind her.

Outside in the corridor, a group of nosy employees had been eagerly waiting for her. "How's it going? Are they going to get back together?" one of them asked immediately.

"Although it's been ages, the former Mrs. Hunt is obviously still the most suitable match for our president. Miss Seraphina isn't compatible with him at all..." another chimed in.

"Forget it. The president is so unpopular right now," someone else whispered. "The bad things he did in the past have all been exposed. The former Mrs. Hunt might be better off away from him!"

"That's right. She can lead an independent life happily without him!" the secretary agreed, albeit with a hint of sadness. She had always liked Renee.

The onlookers in the corridor gossiped and argued endlessly about whether Stefan and Renee would get back together, just as they always had. Though so much time had passed, it was as if nothing had changed at all. Their drama continued to fascinate everyone around them.

But inside Stefan's office, a deep silence had enveloped the room. The man in question was now seated at his desk, one leg crossed over the other as he twirled an expensive pen between his fingers, his expression full of lazy arrogance. He sized Renee up from head to toe, then asked in a mocking tone, "Are you here today to make peace... or to declare war?"

Renee raised her eyebrows and scoffed. "Since you're so clever, Mr. Hunt, why don't you guess?"

"I'm not interested in the thoughts of irrelevant people," Stefan shot back coolly. "However, since you're bold enough to come here alone, I'm guessing that hostility isn't on the cards today."

"Well, you're wrong," Renee sneered, showing him her wrists as if preparing for a fight. "You know, I really want to beat you up right now, but my conscience is telling me not to act rashly."

"Oh?" Stefan smirked, his eyes glittering with challenge. "You and your brother ruined my reputation overnight and I didn't say anything about it. But now, you're trying to shift the blame onto me?"

"The truth will always prevail," Renee said, her gaze turning cold with hatred. "You did something terrible to my brother, so you shouldn't be surprised when people find out about it."

"That's true, but spreading the story isn't honorable," Stefan said easily. He kept twirling that expensive pen between his fingers as he smiled lightly. "Have you ever wondered if what you heard is really the truth?"

Renee narrowed her eyes at the man, her heart beginning to pound with suspicion. "Why don't you tell me if it is, then?"

The air between them crackled with tension. Two people, bound by history and pain, now stood at an impasse—both convinced of their own righteousness, both hiding secrets the other desperately needed to know. Something was coming. Something that would change everything.

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

Oh, what a chapter! This installment was pure emotional whiplash in the best way possible. We finally got more backstory about Quinton's tragic past and this mysterious Joanne Garcia—the woman who broke his heart so completely that it corroded his very soul. Liam's connection to her was completely unexpected, and his terror of his master adds a whole new layer of mystery to this story.

And that confrontation between Renee and Stefan? Absolutely electric. The tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Stefan's line, "Have you ever wondered if what you heard is really the truth?" has me reeling! Is there a possibility that the story we've been told isn't entirely accurate? What actually happened between Quinton, Joanne, and Stefan five years ago? This chapter masterfully set up so many questions while still delivering plenty of drama and emotional depth.

The contrast between Renee desperately wanting to save her brother by bringing back Joanne, and Stefan's clearly complicated feelings about the past, creates a delicious narrative tension. Please, I need more!

**Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4.8 / 5 Stars)**

## Next Chapter Prediction

Based on that final, loaded conversation between Renee and Stefan, the next chapter is surely going to deliver a massive revelation. I predict that Stefan is about to tell Renee a completely different version of what happened five years ago—perhaps Joanne wasn't the innocent victim Liam made her seem, or maybe Quinton's cruelty was born from something even darker than we've been led to believe. Meanwhile, Renee is probably still determined to travel to Cyndiano to find Joanne, which means she'll either drag Liam along for a dangerous journey, or she'll confront Stefan first to extract more information. Either way, secrets are about to be revealed, and Renee's entire understanding of the situation might come crashing down.
