# Chapter 16: The Tower in the Rain

Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 16 of *A Woman Betrayed free digital audiobook*. This is one of those chapters where every step feels heavier, every heartbeat sounds louder, and every word between two people can change everything. So hold on tight, because we are heading into the dark, rain-soaked woods with Amanda and Graham, on a desperate search for a boy who may not want to be found.

The chapter opens with Graham and Amanda deep in the forest, calling out into the echoing air for Jordie. "Jordie?" Graham calls, first to the left, then to the right. But the woods answer them with silence. Graham knows that even if Jordie is hidden somewhere nearby, the boy will not respond. "That doesn't mean he doesn't want to be found," Amanda tells him softly. Graham looks over his shoulder at her—not just with understanding, but with a warmth that reaches her in that damp, dimming light. He reaches back and takes her hand, and they keep moving.

The path climbs beneath their feet. Amanda has to trot to keep up with Graham's long, urgent strides. To calm herself, she drifts into memory—reminding him of Mount Jefferson, of a snowstorm, of racing back to the hut, of slipping and bruising and laughing through it. "I've missed you, Gray," she says.

In one smooth, breathtaking motion, Graham turns, catches her, pulls her close, kisses her firmly on the mouth, sets her down, and keeps walking, still holding her hand. Amanda is utterly turned on. But then she remembers why they are hurrying through the dying light, and her heart sinks back into urgency.

"Jordie," Graham calls again.

Amanda shares what is burning on her heart: she and Jordie talked a week ago, before Quinn did the unthinkable. "What if he's hurt himself?" she asks. Graham squeezes her hand and gives her strength to keep going. They both know the tower ahead is no ordinary place. It is a crumbling sentinel of old gray field stone, forty feet high, scarred by weather and earthquake. In local lore, no one climbs down from the tower on their own. Somehow, the tower pulls you in.

When they reach the clearing, the first fat drops of rain begin to fall. Amanda stumbles over a root, and Graham catches her without slowing. They circle the tower, and then they see him. Jordie. He sits on a ledge near the top of the tower, bare against the heavy gray sky, his legs dangling over the edge. His hands grip the rocks on either side of his hips, and the terror is not just that he might fall forward—but that he could let go, or slip, or simply disappear.

Jordie does not respond to Graham's shouts. Then, slowly, horrifyingly, he reaches beneath his T-shirt and pulls out a small pistol. "Where in the hell did you get that?" Graham yells. Amanda recognizes it: it belongs to Jordie's father. Jordie does not point the gun at them—he doesn't have to. The pistol rests in his lap, a cold message of power and despair.

Graham knows what to do. Amanda is the one who can reach Jordie, so Graham will go for help. He touches her lips with his fingers, holds her eyes for a second, then disappears into the rain. Amanda's chest aches with his absence, but she has a boy to save.

She moves closer and calls up to Jordie, telling him that his parents are terrified. He mutters, "I'll bet." Amanda understands something deep and painful in his voice. She recognizes that familiar churn in the stomach, the dread that comes from living in a home torn apart by secrets. She knows what it is like to walk into a house that should be a haven but feels like a battlefield. So she does the only thing that makes sense to her now: she starts to climb.

"Don't come up," Jordie warns.

Amanda climbs anyway. The rocks are slick, and her heart pounds with every foothold. She slips once, catches herself, and keeps going. Higher and higher. At one terrifying moment, her shoe knocks a rock loose, and she hears it tumble down the side of the tower, hitting stone after stone. She is halfway up now—the point of no return. She tells herself she is a fool. She tells herself she should have waited for rescue. But she cannot go back, so she keeps climbing, centimeter by terrifying centimeter.

When she reaches the top, she has no idea what to do. Her knees are shaking. Her stomach is twisting. Jordie almost laughs at her—almost. He tells her there is a ledge two feet down on the inside. Trembling, Amanda swings one leg over, then the other, and finds the narrow stone. She inches toward Jordie and straddles the wet rock beside him.

Graham is going to kill me, she thinks. She asks where the gun is. Jordie doesn't answer. She doesn't press—she is too afraid of giving him ideas.

"I didn't want you feeling lonely," she tells him, trying to make light of a fatal risk.

Then comes the truth. Jordie finally opens up about Quinn. He gave his friend the vodka. He thought it was for a party. He never imagined Quinn would be caught drunk, punished, shamed in the paper, and then overwhelmed by the weight of it all. "He needed help," Amanda says gently. "You aren't the reason he died." But Jordie cannot yet accept that.

He turns to her, eyes hot with confusion and anger. "Why was Quinn with Gretchen?" he blurts out. He tells Amanda that his father may be cheating with Gretchen, the woman they all tried to help after her husband died. He hates her. He hates that painting she did, the one that has been stabbing his heart every day. And then, in a panicky whisper, Jordie confesses: "I cut the painting." He also made the threatening phone calls. He wanted Gretchen to leave his family alone. If she left, maybe his parents would be okay.

Amanda does not let him sink into shame. She grabs his wrist and speaks with fire and truth. She tells him that anger is okay. He has a right to be angry. She tells him what she learned after years of agonizing over her own parents' warring relationship: you have to feel the anger, own it, and then speak it.

"Your parents are going to feel just as guilty as you do," she says. "Talk to them. Tell them what you're feeling." In the rain, in the twilight, Jordie listens.

Below, more help arrives. Karen and Lee call up to their son, full of love and fear. Russ tells them the rescue squad is coming. Then Graham's voice rises, low and steady, meant only for Amanda: "Hold on, babe. Hold on for me." Her heart swells. She feels tears mixing with rain, there in the dark.

The ladder is raised. A rescue worker climbs up and guides Jordie's foot down. At first, Jordie shakes his head in resistance. But Amanda holds his chin, fiercely gentle, and makes him meet her eyes. "Quinn was a coward. You aren't," she whispers. "Show them that, Jordie. I'm begging you." And finally, Jordie lets go of the stone. He steps down. He starts his slow, painful journey toward his worried parents below.

Amanda watches him descend, thinking they are safe now, thinking that the worst is over. But then she feels a rumble in the stones beneath her. The tower shifts. A cascade of loose rock slides away. In a split second, images flash in her mind—Graham below, watching her fall, unbearable pain on his face. She braces herself for death. But somehow, miraculously, she does not die. She rides the settling stone to a standstill, heart thundering, hands clawing at the wet granite.

"Gray?" she cries out. He is closer than she imagined—on the ladder below her, behind and down. He is coming for her. She can't see the ladder, but she can hear his voice, gentle and calm, guiding her backward, inch by inch. "There, babe. That's it. Keep coming." She weeps. Her body is shaking. She is terrified, exhausted, and so desperately grateful.

His hands find her leg. He guides her foot to the top rung of the ladder. "Lean forward now, honey, and swing the other leg over. Easy. That's it. That's my girl." She obeys him, letting herself be led down step by step, until his body surrounds her, and she finally dares to let go of the granite and grab hold of the ladder.

Graham pulls her close, tucks his chin into her shoulder, and holds her still. "Shhhh. Don't cry, Mandy. We're goin' down now." In that moment, high above the ground, in the cold rain, there is warmth, and grace, and a love that has survived suspicion, secrets, fear, and anger. Together, they climb down from the tower of shifting stone into the waiting lights below.

**Reader's Impressions & Star Rating**

What an incredibly tense, tender, and emotionally powerful chapter! I loved watching Amanda risk everything for Jordie—her courage, her empathy, and her vulnerability made my heart pound the entire way up that tower. The parallel between Jordie's guilt over Quinn and Amanda's own struggles with her parents was beautifully drawn, and Graham's quiet, focused love for her in the chaos felt like a much-needed embrace. This chapter reminded me that saving someone sometimes begins with simply being willing to sit beside them in the rain.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars

**Next Chapter Prediction**

After that terrifying rescue, I predict the next chapter will bring a long-awaited and deeply emotional reckoning between Jordie and his parents. Gretchen will likely learn who vandalized her painting and made those calls—and the question remains whether she will press charges or find it in her heart to forgive. Meanwhile, Amanda and Graham seem to be slowly finding each other again, but with tensions about Gretchen and old secrets still simmering, their newly rekindled trust will be put to the test sooner than they expect.
