# Chapter 40: The Address She Wouldn’t Tell Them About

Sabina curses herself all the way to the main road. Her stomach churns. She worries he will call the police. She worries she has just broken the restraining order in a way that can be proven. But she forces herself to push it aside. She needs food, she needs focus, and she needs to make the phone calls she has been avoiding.
At a drive-thru, she wolfs down a burger and stares at the dark skyline. Her mind feels like an overheating computer, stuck and slow. She forces herself to eat, swallow, breathe, and then she dials Nadia before she can talk herself out of it.
Nadia answers on the first ring, happy about the Facebook shares and attention the case is getting. Sabina interrupts, asking if Nadia saw the direct messages before they disappeared. Nadia hasn’t. Sabina explains everything: how she assumed Amy Sue was another bot, how the address was near the underpass, how the messages vanished right after she noticed them. Then she asks Nadia to come with her.
Nadia’s response is immediate. They should take this to the police.
Sabina argues weakly that Amy Sue said she won’t talk if the police come. She admits she was hoping Nadia would go with her. But for the first time, Sabina hears real fear in Nadia’s voice. Nadia cannot believe Sabina went to the underpass alone. She warns that the area is not a good part of town. When Sabina asks about Nadia’s husband, Nadia shuts it down. They had a fight. He thinks the whole investigation has gotten out of hand. People at church are upset about the Facebook page because both girls were Mormon, and he is a second counselor in the bishopric. Nadia stood up for Sabina, but she cannot bring her husband into this.
Sabina begs. She reminds Nadia that Amy Sue claims to know something about both Andrea and Isabel. Her throat closes around the words she cannot say: What if this is our chance? What if I never find my daughter?
Nadia counters with the obvious fear: what if Amy Sue is a creep? What if it is Dennis? She insists they need to call the police. Sabina shouts no so loudly that Nadia would have been justified in hanging up. Then Sabina lies. She says the meeting is at midnight, not ten. She promises that if Nadia still wants to call the police by eleven, they will do it. Nadia reluctantly agrees, but she does not change her mind. Whoever this person is, they should be talking to the police, not to two untrained women playing detective.
Sabina hangs up and stares at her phone. Joel will be even harder to convince. He would call the cops himself if he knew the truth. But she needs his support and a lifeline more than ever. So she calls him and tells him a half-truth: she is meeting someone who claims to have information about Isabel. Nadia cannot come. The apartment complex looks rundown. Will he stay on speakerphone with her until she knows she is safe?
Joel hesitates. Even with everything she has left out, the plan sounds dangerous. But he says yes. He asks if they are using the usual code. Relief washes over Sabina. Three quick throat-clearings mean she is okay. Three quick coughs mean SOS, get me out of here.
