# Chapter 48: The Confession That Came Too Late
Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 48 of "Forget You Saw Her free digital audiobook". In this chapter, a confession finally cracks open the truth—but the truth arrives with a killer already outside the door. So hold tight, because we are running through the dark with Isabel.
When we catch up with Isabel, she is doing something tender: whispering dreams into Eve's mind, trying to reach the last member of her family. But before she can finish, Andrea tears her away with a force that feels like a hook behind the ribs, pulling Isabel into the church-pew memory. Whatever Andrea says there changes everything. Isabel abandons Eve's bedroom, races down the halls of her family's quiet home, and then flies through the dark neighborhood streets at impossible speed. The dead do not tire the way the living do, but Isabel is running as if her soul depends on it.
She passes the underpass. She cuts through the cemetery, where the pioneer women she saw earlier watch her curiously as she whips past graves and headstones. Then she reaches the apartments where she once lived—the same squat eight-plex where Dennis Beaumont found her. Isabel slips into Rita's old apartment, and there sits Rita on the couch beside Sabina and Andrea. Rita's fingers tremble around a half-spent cigarette. The words hanging in the air are: "What happened to Isabel is my fault."
Isabel freezes, dumbstruck. Rita looks older now—heavier makeup, fine lines around her mouth. They were never friends. The only reason Rita ever lingered in Isabel's mind was that bag of goodfellas Rita had shoved into her hands the night she left. Isabel has wondered for years: if she hadn't been carrying those drugs when police found her body, would they have investigated her murder? Would they have tested her body instead of burying her as a Jane Doe? Was that what Rita meant by fault?
Andrea pats the couch cushion beside her. She is exhausted and terrified. Isabel has a hundred questions, but Rita keeps talking. She says Isabel never told her where she was going. Rita didn't ask, but she guessed. Isabel had no car, and there was an underpass about a mile away, walking distance to a food bank. A lot of the girls in that complex had stayed there at one point.
Isabel braces for a supernatural storm—wind howling, lights flickering, microwave beeping. Nothing happens. She only feels numb and depleted from pouring dreams into her family's heads. Her mind spins. Rita knew exactly where Isabel had gone. And from Andrea's stricken face, Isabel knows Andrea is thinking the same thing: that is how Dennis found her at the underpass. Sabina realizes it too as Rita continues.
Rita says Dennis came back to the apartments a couple of weeks after Isabel left. Isabel was gone. So he knocked on Rita's door. Sabina doesn't move. Tears shine in her eyes. Rita blows smoke into the room, not aiming for the vent, but Sabina doesn't flinch. Rita says he was worse than ever. She told herself to endure it like before, and then he would leave. But then he started asking about Isabel. The managers didn't know where she had gone, and they likely didn't care. They had replaced Isabel with a new girl the day she left—someone older, in her thirties. So Dennis didn't want her.
Sabina bites her lip hard, fighting to let Rita speak.
Rita gives her a pleading look. At first, Rita said she didn't know where Isabel went. She pretended not to know who he was talking about. But he wouldn't leave without an answer. He threatened to hurt her. So Rita said maybe she knew where Isabel had gone. She hated herself for it, but she was afraid. He was holding her arm so hard, getting in her face.
Then Rita told him about the underpass. His eyes went sharklike, dead and black. It scared her. He grabbed her throat so hard she thought he would strangle her. He told her to forget she ever saw him. And he said: "Forget you saw her, too, because if you don't, I'll make sure you disappear." He told her nobody would care what happened to a "filthy whore" like her.
Rita snubs out the cigarette, puts her face in her hands, and sobs. She apologizes again and again. She told herself Isabel would be okay. She didn't let herself think about either of them after that, because Dennis never came around the apartments again. Then yesterday, scrolling Facebook on her phone, she saw Andrea's post.
Andrea reaches for Isabel's hand, and Isabel takes it. There is comfort in knowing Andrea is reeling as much as she is. Isabel feels sadness and horror threaded through numbness, but she doesn't really blame Rita. He probably would have strangled her. Isabel might have done the same in her shoes. Anything to get him to leave. Anything to get those shark eyes and ragged fingernails out of her apartment.
But there is no time to sort through this tangle of awfulness. Because the words blaring in Isabel's mind are the ones Andrea shouted when she yanked her into the memory: "Dennis is coming for Sabina right now!"
Now the urgency is real. After everything Rita has said, Sabina is in danger the second she leaves the apartment. Isabel can see it in the rigid way Sabina sits, ready to jump off the couch and rush back to her car. Sabina knows Rita is the missing puzzle piece tying Isabel's death to Andrea. The police will see it. Dennis will see it. He knew about this puzzle piece better than anyone. If he knows Sabina is talking to someone in this complex—maybe he is watching the breezeway by Rita's door—then he knows she might be learning something that could send him to jail. And Isabel is certain he will do whatever it takes to stop that.
"She needs to call the police right fucking now," Isabel says. Andrea answers with a hint of reproach: she tried everything to stop him while he was driving over. But he is here. He knows where Sabina's car is parked. He is going to do something bad, and there is nothing they can do. Andrea's eyes are huge. She keeps shaking her head like she is in a daze. Through their joined hands, Isabel knows Andrea is just as exhausted and depleted as she is.
"Talk to her," Isabel demands. "Try again!"
Andrea begs Sabina: "Call the police now, don't leave the apartment. Please, Mom. He's outside. He's going to hurt you."
But Sabina is still focused only on Rita. She moves her hand to her chest, resting it perfectly square on top of Andrea's. After a beat of silence, she says, "I mean what I said earlier. It's not your fault what happened to Isabel, okay? It's his fault. He did that to her, not you."
Rita squeezes her eyes shut and shakes her head. New tears cut paths through her ruined mascara. "You don't have to say that."
Andrea begs again: "Please, the police, you have to call the—"
Sabina pulls her phone from her back pocket and unlocks it. In the split second the screen flashes to life, Isabel sees a flurry of missed texts from Nadia, demanding to know why Sabina hadn't called back, where she was, and the address "Amy Sue" had given. Sabina starts, "The police will see it that way, too. I'm going to—"
"No!" Rita cries.
Before Sabina can blink, Rita knocks the phone out of her hand like it is a rattlesnake about to strike. Sabina freezes. Her voice drops, quiet and stern. "Rita, you asked me to come here for a reason. I know you're scared, but—"
Rita shakes her head wildly, eyes fixed on the phone. Her muscles are tensed, as if she will dive for it the second Sabina moves. "No. I'm not ready to do that. You know how scared I was to send you that message? You know how many times I said, 'fuck it' and told myself to forget it?" Her voice rises. "The last girl who ratted on the managers after a client nearly beat her to death wound up in jail for turning tricks."
Sabina shifts uncomfortably. "But when you tell them what you know, they'll arrest—"
Rita's eyes blaze. "Ever since I contacted you, I've been getting ready to make a move, get out of here so he won't be able to find me. But I need a couple more days. Then I'll talk. But there's no way we're calling right this goddamn minute."
Isabel's heart sinks.
Rita lifts her chin. "I'm sorry for what I did, and I hate that motherfucker, but I'm scared. Not just of him. The guys who run this place..." She sets her mouth in a hard line. "Yeah, they treat us decent compared to some other places, but that doesn't mean they give a shit. And it doesn't mean they won't slap me around if I get out of line. I've got nowhere else to go, and I'm not gonna talk until I can get on a bus the second I've said my piece, given the cops a statement or whatever. Police are gonna be all over here trying to talk to the managers and the other girls—and they're gonna know pretty quick that it was me who squealed."
Sabina looks stricken. She holds out her hands like she is trying to coax a jumper off a ledge. "I'm sorry, please, I'm sorry. You're absolutely right. I don't want to put you in any danger."
"No!" Isabel cries. "No, you have to let Sabina call them right now. Please, Rita!" If something happens to Sabina when she walks out that door, Isabel has no doubt Rita will disappear the second she realizes Dennis is making good on his threats. There isn't time to wait. Sabina has to call the police now.
"Mom, make her listen," Andrea adds desperately, eyes wild.
But Sabina only nods slowly, pointing down at the phone Rita knocked to the floor. "I'm going to pick that up now, okay? But I'm not going to call anybody. I promise. Not until I know you'll be safe."
"Shit," Isabel hisses.
"We have to find a way to keep her here—or distract Dennis," Andrea cries as Sabina stands and gives Rita a tentative hug, talking in low voices as they move toward the apartment door.
But Isabel is out of ideas. She doesn't feel powerful or fierce like she did when she made the windstorm blow over Marlie's shelter so Sabina would see her backpack, or when she whispered dreams to her family. She is wrung out. And all she feels now is dread.
**Reader's Impressions & Star Rating:**
This chapter is a gut-punch wrapped in dread. The confession from Rita is devastating because it doesn't just reveal information—it reveals how fragile everyone is against Dennis. Isabel's helplessness is painful to witness, especially after she has already spent so much of herself trying to reach her family. The tension is masterfully built: the phone on the floor, the unlocked door, Sabina's quiet stubbornness, and Andrea's desperate cries all collide at the worst possible moment. It feels like watching a trap close in slow motion.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 5.0 / 5 Stars
**Next Chapter Prediction:**
I predict Sabina will step toward the apartment door despite every warning, and Dennis will be waiting in the shadows or breezeway. Isabel and Andrea may try one final supernatural attempt to distract him, but Isabel is nearly drained. Nadia might also arrive because of those missed texts, which could either save Sabina or put another target in Dennis's path. The next chapter will likely be a life-or-death confrontation where Rita's fear, Sabina's determination, and Dennis's violence finally collide.
