# Chapter 50: The Night the Courtyard Held Its Breath

Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 50 of "Forget You Saw Her free digital audiobook." This is the chapter where the nightmare stops hiding in the shadows and steps into the courtyard with a broken bottle in its hand. It is brutal, breathless, and almost unbearable—but we have to walk through it together. So hold on tight.

The chapter opens with Andrea screaming into the dark, her voice urgent and desperate: “Don’t look back. Hit him again, just keep running!” But Sabina does not run. She freezes mid-stride as if she has slammed into an invisible wall. Her body trembles in the half-light, her phone clutched in one hand, the glow painting her fingers pale blue. On the screen, the first two digits of an emergency call blink uselessly: 9-1. And then we understand why she has stopped fighting.

Dennis has a new weapon.

He presses the sharp ridge of a broken bottle against the soft skin of Sabina’s throat. He holds it so tight that every silent, terrified thought in Andrea’s mind becomes a vision of that pale skin splitting open. “Drop the fucking phone, now,” Dennis hisses into Sabina’s ear. Flecks of spit pepper her cheek. His eyes are huge and black in the moonlight, glinting with rage and something worse—pleasure. His breathing is labored and fast. Sabina hurt him when she elbowed him, and now he is going to make her pay.

Sabina tries to speak into the phone, but only a gasping rattle comes out, a broken croak. The breeze that had followed her away from Rita’s apartment has died down to a whisper. The loudest sound in the grimy courtyard is Dennis’s ragged breathing as he holds that jagged glass to her throat. For half a second, nobody moves.

Then Isabel screams.

It is a raw, animal sound, and she launches herself at Dennis, clawing at his back, clawing at his eyes like a feral cat. Andrea screams too: “Help, please, we need help!” But even as the words leave her, she knows the truth. Nobody can hear her. Nobody will help. Dennis growls again, yanking Sabina’s hair with one hand while pressing harder with the bottle edge. A red bead wells up beneath the glass. Andrea whimpers for her mother while Isabel claws harder, still screaming like a banshee.

But Sabina still does not comply. Her thumb moves, shaking, slipping across the screen. She is trying to finish the call—to hit the last button that will send it through to the police. She cannot see the screen. Her head is twisted too far skyward because of the way Dennis is holding her hair, and the angle of the glass shard pressing into the front of her throat. Andrea presses her lips to Sabina’s ear and begs, “A little to the right!”

9-1-2.

Sabina cannot see the screen. But Dennis can. The barest smile works the corner of his lips as he sees what she tried—and failed—to do. Then he cranks her neck roughly as she fumbles for the call button one more time. The call still does not go through. Dennis knows it. His gaze flicks from the screen to her throat. Then, with a snarl, he lets go of her hair for the briefest moment—and slaps the phone from her hands. It sails through the air, spinning over the pavement like a skipping rock before vanishing into the shadowy tangle of junipers.

Sabina seizes the opportunity. She lashes out with her feet, kicking hard. Andrea cries, “Yes!” as Isabel claws uselessly at Dennis’s eyes and Sabina’s first kick connects with his side. He grunts. She rears back and goes for his groin again. The blow never lands. Dennis does not flinch away. He catches her ankle midair and yanks hard. Sabina crumples onto the pavement with a sickening thud, bone on concrete. Andrea leaps toward her, covering her body with hers as she sees him lunge.

She feels the jagged glass move through her like so many dust particles. And she watches up close as Dennis drives the bottle into Sabina’s neck. He does not say anything else to her. There is no pause for confession, no moment of breath, no explanation for everything he did to Andrea, to Isabel, before he delivers the blows. Just raw, abrupt violence and blood. As the blood gushes down Sabina’s throat and into the hem of her shirt, Dennis lifts the jagged glass and rams it into her chest. Then again. And again. Her arm, her side, her ribs. The blood drips onto the sidewalk in messy ribbons, pooling on the pavement and soaking into the cracks.

“Mom!” Andrea cries, curling herself around Sabina even though she knows it is useless. Like maybe her mother could feel her in those final moments. Sabina’s hands jerk with each impact, and her mouth opens wide, gasping in mute shock. The only part of her that is not dripping red is her face, and it tilts toward the apartment complex, eyes locked on the silent building. The porch lights are still flickering, but there is no sign of movement behind the rows of dark, slatted blinds covering the windows facing the courtyard. If someone looked outside right now, sorting the shapes in the darkness for just a few seconds, they would see Sabina’s body lying on the pavement, covered in blood. But not one set of blinds parts. Not one door opens.

Dennis raises the bloody bottle yet again, his eyes on Sabina’s chest where part of her shirt is still clean and unbroken. Andrea braces, waiting for him to deliver the blow that will make her mother stop writhing and go still. Every part of her wants to protect Sabina. Every part of her wants to wrestle him for that broken bottle. She cannot do a single thing.

And then, out of the corner of her eye, she sees Isabel stop frantically—uselessly—pummeling Dennis’s head and turn toward the juniper bushes. Isabel gasps quietly. And then she calls out, “Please, do something, please help us!”

The chapter ends on that desperate plea, hanging in the dark courtyard like a thread about to snap.

## Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating

As a reader, this chapter left me shattered. The pacing is relentless, the violence is horrifying, and the helplessness of Andrea and Isabel is almost too much to bear. What makes it hit so hard is not just the brutality of Dennis, but the silence of the watching windows—the ordinary world refusing to see what is happening just outside. Sabina’s failed call, the blinking 9-1, the broken bottle, the blood soaking into the pavement—it all feels painfully vivid. The chapter also deepens the ghostly tragedy: Andrea can scream, beg, and throw herself over her mother, but she cannot save her. That powerlessness is the true horror here.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.9 / 5 Stars

## Next Chapter Prediction

I predict the next chapter will finally reveal what Isabel saw in the juniper bushes. That desperate cry—“Please, do something, please help us!”—has to be answered by someone or something. It could be another ghost, a hidden witness, or a supernatural force that has been lingering just out of sight. I also think Dennis’s attack will be interrupted, though the damage may already be fatal for Sabina. The next chapter will likely shift from pure helplessness to a turning point: either someone finally sees, someone finally acts, or Andrea and Isabel discover a new rule of their spectral existence that gives them a chance to fight back.
