The morning light drifted softly through the palace windows, but for Alessandro and Abril, the world outside ceased to exist the moment they were alone. He pulled her close, pressing his lips gently against hers before wrapping her in an embrace so tight it felt as though he was trying to shield her from every storm the heavens could throw. For a full minute, neither of them spoke. They simply breathed — his steady, her trembling — as if each heartbeat was a promise whispered between them.

Alessandro’s fingers found their way into her curls, stroking them with a tenderness that would have surprised anyone who only knew him as the fearsome king. He looked down at her, his beautiful green eyes glinting with sincerity.

"You're not alone anymore, Abril. I'm with you."

Her heart clenched. Slowly, she took his hand and pressed it to her cheek, savoring his warmth. "I know," she whispered. "It’s just that so many things have happened these past few days. I'm afraid of what's coming next... I'm afraid of losing you, Lessan."

And there it was — the vulnerability she rarely showed, the crack in her armor that she only trusted him to see. But what she didn't know was that the same fear gnawed at him. It infested his thoughts every hour of every day, the dread that the hands of King Venobich might once again tear away the people he loved, just as they had before. He cradled her face in his hands, pressed his forehead to hers, and looked into her eyes as if searching for her very soul.

"I'm afraid too — and I'm glad I feel it. Because if I didn't, I would be a reckless fool. Fear isn't a weakness, Aby. It's the only thing that keeps us from charging blindly into catastrophe. Just never let fear control you."

It was a fragile moment of peace, pure and breathing — and then a knock shattered it.

Gabriel poked his head through the door, his expression apologetic. "Sorry to interrupt, Your Majesty. Duke Vampel has arrived."

Alessandro’s jaw tightened. He hated the idea of letting Abril go, especially since she had come to him today — something she seldom did. He could see the fleeting disappointment in her eyes before she masked it, and it nearly made him tell Gabriel to throw the duke out on his ear. But he was a king, and kings bore burdens that could not be ignored.

April pulled away gently. "You must be busy. I should go."

He caught her hand before she could take a step, drawing her back for another tender kiss. "When I finish with the duke, I will come to you."

"If you're busy, you don't have to—"

"No matter how busy I am, Aby, I will always have time for you." He turned to Gabriel, his voice shifting back into its regal tone. "Let him in."

Gabriel left, and a moment later Duke Vampel entered. The man bowed low to Alessandro — a perfect bow, the kind practiced in mirrors — and then he turned to April. But when he spoke, his greeting was clipped, dismissive, and deliberately deprecating.

"Greetings to Princess April."

The title hung in the air like an insult. Princess, not Queen. The word scorched Alessandro's ears, igniting a fire behind his eyes.

"She is my wife. My queen." His voice was deathly calm. "Do you refuse to recognize her as such?"

The duke saw the storm gathering in the king’s gaze and wisely bowed his head to April. "I apologize, Your Majesty. I was wrong. I humbly beg your forgiveness if I have offended you."

Abril accepted the apology, but she did so coldly. There was something about the way Duke Vampel looked at her — something she couldn't name but that made her skin crawl. She wanted nothing more than to vanish from that room.

"I'll take my leave now."

Alessandro nodded. "I'll come soon."

And she was gone.

The moment the door closed, the temperature in the room plummeted. Alessandro’s voice turned to steel.

"Let me make this clear, Duke. If you are ever rude to my wife again, rest assured that your head will no longer be attached to your neck. She is — and will be — my only wife."

The duke swallowed hard. "Don't worry, Your Majesty. That won't happen again."

"You'd better hope it doesn't."

Alessandro settled behind his desk, fury still flickering in his voice. "Now. What business could be so important that you insisted so strongly on this audience?"

Duke Vampel straightened, choosing his words carefully. "I have come to ask for clemency for my daughter, Victoria. Since Your Majesty banned her from the palace, she has fallen into a deep depression."

"You want me to lift the ban?" Alessandro's voice was flat. "No. She was rude to my wife and tried to attack her. She is never to set foot in this palace again."

"But Your Majesty—"

"I was merciful to her. Had I been just, she would not be alive today. You know full well that the price for attacking a member of the royal family is death."

Duke Vampel’s mouth pressed into a thin line. He seemed to weigh his next words with great care before unleashing his poisoned arrow. "I understand, Your Majesty. But I must think about the future of this kingdom. Another war is coming soon, and Your Majesty still has no heir. I mean no disrespect, but you have been married for four years, and there is still no word of one. It seems evident that the Queen cannot bear children. Therefore, it would be wise for you to take another wife, and—"

*WHAM.*

Alessandro slammed both palms onto the desk with such force that the heavy wood trembled. Duke Vampel flinched backward, his face paling. The king’s eyes were molten green fire.

"Shut your mouth," Alessandro hissed. "If one more word passes your lips, I will tear out your tongue and feed it to the dogs. April is the only wife I will ever have. I do not care that you are an influential man, Duke. Neither you nor anyone else will force me to take another wife. And whoever dares to mention it again will pay the price that entails."

The duke read the absolute certainty in his king’s eyes and knew — with chilling clarity — that pushing further would be his death sentence. He bowed low, exaggerated and groveling.

"I sincerely apologize if I have offended Your Majesty. I was only thinking of the good of the kingdom."

"If that is all you had to say, you may leave."

"Yes. Thank you for your time, Your Majesty."

But as Duke Vampel made his obsequious way toward the door, his fingers brushed along the underside of the king's desk. Quick, silent, practiced. He left something there — a single seed. A seed of darkness. An object he had been commissioned to plant by a master whose name he dare not speak to anyone.

The duke left.

A moment later, Gabriel re-entered, a crease of confusion furrowing his brow. "What did the duke want?"

"To lift the ban I placed on his daughter," Alessandro said, scowling. "But I made it clear that woman will never step foot in this palace again. She dared to harm April. I will never forgive that."

Gabriel hesitated. "That's strange, though. If he didn't get what he wanted, why did he look so pleased?"

"Pleased? What are you talking about?"

"I could have sworn I saw him smiling as he left."

Alessandro waved a dismissive hand. "You must have imagined it."

Gabriel said nothing, but the doubt lingered in the back of his mind like a splinter. Something about Duke Vampel's exit felt wrong — too cheerful, too light.

Alessandro rose to his feet. "I'm taking the rest of the day. Handle the paperwork."

Gabriel’s eyes went wide as he looked at the mountain of documents piled high on the king's desk. "Do I have to handle *all* of that?"

"Yes."

"Any objections?"

Gabriel’s lips twitched. "Would you hear them if I said yes?"

"No. But you'll still have to handle it."

And with that, Alessandro walked out, leaving Gabriel alone with the towering pile. The poor man stared at it, then muttered under his breath, "Damn tyrant. He thinks he's the only one with a wife!"

He flopped onto the king's chair, grabbed a quill, and began working his way through that bureaucratic mountain with tears in his eyes. Another night away from his own family — another night lost to his cursed, lovable, tyrannical king.

*She is — and will be — my only wife.* Alessandro's words echoed through the corridors, a vow carved in stone. But in the shadows, a tiny seed of darkness began to stir beneath the royal desk — silent, hungry, patient. Waiting to take root.

## Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating

Oh, this chapter was a rollercoaster of the heart! I absolutely loved the opening scene between Alessandro and April — finally, a moment of pure tenderness between them, where both let down their walls and admitted their fears. It made me feel their love, their fragility, and the weight they carry together. And then came Duke Vampel, who had the audacity to disrespect April and then suggest another wife?! The way Alessandro slammed his fists and threatened to feed his tongue to the dogs — I nearly cheered out loud! But that ending... my neck prickled when the duke planted that dark seed. Gabriel noticed the smile. He *noticed* — and I’m terrified something terrible is about to be sown. This chapter was both heartwarming and ominous. Absolutely gripping from start to finish.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rating: 4.9 / 5 Stars

## Next Chapter Prediction

The seed of darkness is only the beginning. I believe Duke Vampel isn’t acting alone — someone higher is pulling his strings, and that dark seed may slowly begin to poison Alessandro’s mind or corrupt the palace from within. Gabriel’s suspicion will likely lead him to dig deeper, while Abril, with her keen instincts, might sense something wrong with the king — perhaps a growing darkness or a subtle change in his behavior. What will happen when that seed begins to sprout? Will Alessandro turn cold and distance himself from April, or will an ancient evil awaken right under the royal roof? One thing is certain: the storm is coming, and no one is ready for it.
