The night was still, but not all hearts were at peace.

Cassian found himself standing outside Maya’s room, his hand hesitating before he knocked. When she finally opened the door, her expression carried a flicker of surprise, maybe even a hint of annoyance. But when she saw that it was him, her shoulders softened slightly.

“What a surprise,” she said, a curious smile tugging at her lips. “Lately, you are the one who comes looking for me. Is something wrong?”

“No,” he replied. “Can I come in?”

“Clear.”

She sat at the edge of her bed while he remained standing, searching for the right words. Something about her tonight felt different — quieter, distant.

“Are you okay?” he asked carefully.

“Of course. Why wouldn't I be?”

“I don't know. It’s just… you were very quiet during dinner.”

“Because I had nothing to say.”

“Really?”

She looked at him, and for a moment the mask she wore seemed to crack. But then she smiled. “Yes. I’m fine. Don’t worry.”

Cassian moved closer and sat beside her, gently taking her hand in his.

“Since I met you, you have helped me a lot,” he said softly.

“I know.”

“So, if one day you need my help with something, just say it. I'll be there for you — just as you've been there for me.”

Maya’s eyes flickered with something unreadable. “What if I ask you for something crazy and far-fetched?”

He almost smiled. “I have also asked you something like that. We will go to the fairy lands to look for one of the keys to Hades.”

“I guess I can ask for something just as crazy when the time comes,” she said, her voice turning strangely tender. “No matter where I ask you to go, you will come for me on your white horse, like the princes in the stories.”

“You are in luck,” Cassian replied, a rare warmth in his voice. “I am a prince. Although I will soon renounce my title. And I do have a white horse.”

“So it’s a promise? When I need you, you’ll come?”

“Yeah.”

Maya rested her head against his shoulder, and her voice was barely a whisper.

“You better keep your promise.”

Meanwhile, in another part of the palace, passion was still burning.

Alessandro had walked Abril back to her room after a long, lingering night. The moment the door closed behind them, he pulled her close and kissed her — deep, sweet, demanding. When their lips finally parted, he looked at her with concern burning in his eyes.

“Are you sure you're okay to do this?”

“Yes,” Abril said, her cheeks flushed. “Today I felt very good. I think I’m getting used to my magic.”

“How?”

“When one of the seals is broken, my magic flows throughout my body. At first it made me feel bad, but now I feel better. I no longer lose consciousness like I did before. I'm getting better.”

“Really?” He wanted to believe her.

“You're not saying this to reassure me, are you?”

“Of course not. This time I’m really okay.”

Abril stood on her tiptoes and gave him a soft kiss. “So… can we continue?”

Alessandro didn’t wait another second. He swept her into his arms and carried her gently to the bed. Even though she insisted she was fine, he was careful — so careful. His kisses covered every inch of her body like a prayer, and his caresses were as light as feathers. That night, he made love to her slowly, without haste, as if they had all the time in the world to love each other, to be happy, to forget the storm looming over their heads.

And for a while, they did.

---

But in another room, silence was building a wall.

Cassian sat beside Maya for a long time. Neither of them spoke a single word. The quiet was so deep that Cassian thought she had fallen asleep.

“Maya, are you awake?”

“Yes, I’m still awake.”

“Maybe I should go and let you rest.”

Normally, Maya would have invited him to stay. But tonight, those words from Abril kept haunting her mind: *When you share your body, you also share your feelings. A bond is created that over time is difficult to break.*

Maya couldn’t afford to create that kind of bond. That was why she never stayed too long with the same person. Her relationships were always short, always temporary. She had to start drawing a line between her and Cassian — before it was too late.

“Yes,” she said, her voice unusually cold. “I think it would be best if you went. I’m tired. I’m sleepy.”

Cassian blinked. He had expected her to invite him to stay — perhaps even hoped for it. But instead, she was letting him go. Confused, he rose and walked to the door. Before closing it, he whispered, “Good night. See you tomorrow.”

“See you tomorrow.”

And then the door closed.

He stared at it for a long moment, waiting for her to open it again, to laugh and tell him it was all a joke. But she didn’t. Finally, he walked back to his own room, a strange emptiness settling in his chest.

Later that night, Abril drifted into a dream.

Her mother appeared before her again, but her face was full of worry.

“Mother, what's wrong? You look worried.”

“Abril,” Sophia said softly. “Today I felt a strange power in the palace. I felt the darkness.”

“I felt something strange this afternoon too,” Abril admitted. “But I don't know if it was the darkness.”

“I thought you were safe here, but now I am not so sure. Maybe the darkness is also in this palace. You must be very careful, Abril. Vritra cannot discover your power. Not yet. I think it is time for you to break another seal.”

“Yeah.”

Abril listened to her mother’s words and did as she was told. She broke another of the ancient seals containing her magic. And to her surprise, this time she did not feel tired. Instead, a wave of power flooded every vein in her body.

Sophia took her hands, her spectral gaze full of pride and urgency.

“You can feel it, can’t you? Your magic filling you, giving you power.”

“Yes, I can feel it.”

“From now on, you will no longer feel tired when one of the seals is broken. Your body is getting used to your magic.”

“But how should I use my magic?”

“I will teach you. How to defend yourself. How to protect yourself. Because danger may be closer than we think, and you must be prepared for what is coming. But only use your magic as a last resort. Remember, you must hide your power from others — at least until the last seal is broken.”

“I will do so.”

Morning came with golden light and unanswered questions.

Cassian went to Maya’s room, knocking again and again. But no one answered. A maid finally approached him, curtsying gently.

“Prince Cassian, if you are looking for Miss Maya, she left a while ago.”

“Where to?”

“I don't know, my lord. She didn’t say.”

Cassian’s frown deepened. He wandered through the palace until he reached the training grounds, and there he stopped in his tracks.

Maya was magnificent.

She stood with a bow in her hands, her posture perfect, her eyes focused. She released arrow after arrow, and every single one struck the target dead center. Cassian was utterly fascinated. He wondered what other hidden skills she possessed — and what other secrets she still kept from him.

But he wasn’t the only one watching.

A soldier named Dorian stood close to her, a tall, attractive young man with blond hair and striking blue eyes, showering her with praise.

“You are very good at this,” Dorian said, his admiration clear. “Your skill is undoubtedly incredible. Who taught you?”

“My father gave me a bow since I was old enough to hold it.”

Cassian’s jaw tightened. He walked over, interrupting them.

“Good morning.”

Dorian immediately bowed. “Good morning, Prince Cassian.”

“You don’t have to train?”

“Yes, with your permission.”

When Dorian left, Maya gave Cassian a knowing glance.

“You seem very grumpy today. You haven’t had a good night.”

“It’s not true. I’m the same as always.”

Maya shot another arrow and responded dryly. “It is true. You seem upset today.”

“I’ve already said no.”

“I don’t want to fight, so let’s leave it at that.”

“But I’m not upset.”

Maya stared at him, her eyebrow arching as if to say, *Are you serious? You really want to keep this up?* Cassian, realizing she was growing annoyed, finally changed the subject.

“I thought we were going to have breakfast together.”

“You didn’t ask me, so I didn’t know you wanted to have breakfast together.”

“Well, normally we always do it, so I didn’t know I had to ask for it.”

Maya turned to face him fully, and her voice was calm but pointed. “Next time, tell me. Or I won’t know. You have to be clear about what you want.”

There it was — not just about breakfast, but about everything.

And Cassian knew that something between them had subtly begun to shift.

## Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating

What a beautifully layered chapter! The emotional tension between Cassian and Maya is so subtle yet so powerful — Maya deliberately pulling away while Cassian doesn’t even realize what he’s losing. Their “white horse” promise was sweet and tragic at the same time, especially knowing what might come next. On the other hand, Abril’s relationship with Alessandro is full of warmth and intimacy, a tender contrast to the growing distance elsewhere. The dream sequence adds a layer of intrigue: danger is closer than anyone thinks, and the darkness may already be inside the palace walls. I absolutely love the pacing, the emotional nuance, and the way every scene deepens the story without losing the romance.

## Next Chapter Prediction

I predict that in the next chapter, Maya will continue to distance herself from Cassian in an attempt to protect both of them — but that will only make him chase her harder. Meanwhile, Abigail’s training with her mother will begin in secret, but she may accidentally reveal a spark of her power at the most dangerous moment, drawing the wrong kind of attention. And with darkness lurking inside the palace, someone may be exposed as a traitor sooner than everyone expects.
