# CHAPTER 19: The Darkness That Saves
Hello everyone, it’s me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review CHAPTER 19 of "Fourth Wing" — a chapter that begins in terror and ends in a revelation so staggering it will make your heart hammer right along with Violet’s. We’re in for a wild ride, so hold on tight.
---
The night explodes into chaos. One moment Violet is asleep in her room, the next she’s fighting for her life against Oren and a pack of assassins who’ve breached her locked door. A dagger is at her throat, her ribs are screaming, and death is one sharp breath away. Then, just as everything seems lost, the doorway fills with shadow and fury — Xaden Riorson, fully dressed, armed, and radiating pure lethal intent. Shadows curl from the walls like living things, and for the first time since crossing the parapet, Violet is so relieved to see him she could cry.
Andarna gasps in her mind. The chaos resumes. Nausea clenches her stomach.
“It’s about damned time,” Tairn rumbles.
Xaden locks eyes with Violet for a split second of shock, then strides forward. He snaps his fingers, and mage lights illuminate the room as he announces to every attacker: **“You’re all fucking dead.”**
Oren’s dagger clatters to the floor. He stammers about surrender and the code against attacking another rider in their sleep. But Xaden Riorson doesn’t negotiate. His shadows grab every attacker by the throat — all except Oren — and constrict. One by one, they drop to their knees and crumple like lifeless puppets.
And Violet cannot find it in her heart to pity them.
Xaden retrieves her discarded dagger, lifts it from the floor with a tendril of shadow, and gives Oren one harsh sentence: “She should have killed you in the field, but she’s merciful. That’s not a flaw I possess.” He slashes once. Oren’s throat opens, and he bleeds out in seconds on the floor at Violet’s feet.
Garrick and Bodhi arrive moments later, hauling bodies away like it’s routine. Violet can’t help but notice the rebellion relics shimmering on their arms, the efficiency of their cleanup. She’s alive. She repeats it like a mantra. Alive. Alive. Alive.
But pain floods back with a vengeance. Her ribs are on fire — the one by the bed took a sword hit. Through the shock, Xaden kneels before her — Xaden Riorson, the most feared wingleader in Basgiath — and puts her boots on her feet, laces them one by one, wraps her cloak around her shoulders, and buttons it at her collar like she’s something precious. Violet’s brain short-circuits. This is the same man who had no problem with her death months ago.
And yet, here he is. Pulling her into a hidden passage behind a stone wall, leading her deep beneath the academy. A mage light hovers above them as they walk through an endless, earthy tunnel.
“Are you going to tell me what that was in there?” Violet asks.
“I could ask you the same thing.”
The banter is sharp and revealing. Xaden walks beside her, slowing his pace when she stumbles, wrapping an arm around her waist to steady her. His minty scent fills her senses, and she hates how her heart races. He mentions he refuses to sleep on her floor like some guard dog, revealing just how close this attack came — and how much he needs her alive.
When they finally emerge near the flight field, the three dragons descend like omen from the stars. Andarna scrambles to Violet, checking her ribs, her worry pouring through their bond. But this meeting isn’t about comfort. Xaden steps forward, his face a mask of fury, and demands to know what power Violet used to cross the room in an instant.
Tairn growls. Sgaeyl speaks. And then Andarna — baby Andarna, a two-year-old feathertail — raises her head proudly and answers what Violet can barely comprehend:
**“I made time stop. But only for a little bit.”**
Violet’s world tilts on its axis. No one can stop time. Nothing can stop it. It’s unheard of. A signet is a combination of a dragon’s power with the rider’s own ability to channel — but this isn’t a signet. Andarna gave her gift directly to Violet, crossing the boundaries of dragon law and nature itself. Because she’s still a hatchling, too young to bond, too unpredictable to be trusted — yet she chose Violet.
Xaden’s usually iron composure cracks. He’s flat-out shocked. And then, to her surprise, he hardens into a shield around her secret.
“They’re not going to find out,” he promises. “Not you. Not me. Not them. Understand?”
The implications hit Violet like a death blow. If leadership ever learned she could stop time, she’d be hunted. Killed. Just like Jeremiah the mind reader. A capital offense. The terror freezes her blood.
“Promise me you won’t tell anyone,” Xaden says, and it feels like a command. “Rare abilities, when kept secret, are the most valuable form of currency we possess.”
Maybe he’s protecting her. Maybe he’s protecting his own investment. But at least it means he intends for her to live.
Then comes the harder truth: someone let the attackers in. Violet knows who it was — she saw her retreating in the chaos. Xaden stops in the tunnel, his grip tight on her elbow, fury swimming in his eyes. “At some point, you and I are going to have to start trusting each other, Sorrengail. The rest of our lives depend on it. Now tell me **who**.”
Violet hesitates. Accusing a wingleader is the most dangerous accusation of all. But she tells him anyway.
---
Morning comes too soon. Standing in formation, Violet shifts to soothe her black-and-blue ribs, ignoring the stares at the ring of bruises around her throat. Six names on the death roll — six people who tried to kill her in the night. She feels no sorrow. After breakfast, Rhiannon is still seething, unable to believe anyone would attack a rider in her sleep.
“Even worse, I think I’m getting used to it,” Violet admits.
Either she has incredible compartmentalization skills, or she’s truly acclimating to being a target. One thing is certain: the war for her life isn’t over. It’s only beginning.

## Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating
What a breathtaking chapter! The tension is relentless — Violet’s near-death scene gave me chills, and Xaden’s brutal rescue was both terrifying and, yes, impossibly attractive. But the heart of this chapter is the revelation of Andarna’s gift. Time-stopping is such a clever, game-changing power, and watching Xaden’s shock — and his immediate instinct to protect Violet — opened a whole new layer to his character. The trust between them is fragile and complicated, but it’s growing. The writing is visceral, the emotional stakes are sky-high, and the ending leaves you desperate for more.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ **Rating: 4.9 / 5 Stars**
## Next Chapter Prediction
With the secret of Violet’s dangerous power now shared between her and Xaden, and a wingleader named as the one who opened her door, an explosion of political tension is coming. Will Xaden confront the accused wingleader? Will Violet’s ability be discovered by someone else? And as she grows closer to the man who once wanted her dead, expect more whispered battles, dangerous alliances, and a secret that could burn them all to ash.
