# CHAPTER 27: The Weight of Shadow and Separation

Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? Today I continue to walk with you through the fiery, heart-wrenching world of *Fourth Wing*, and let me tell you—Chapter 27 is a maelstrom of tension, desire, bitter rivalry, and a sudden, terrifying escape that will leave you breathless. We pick up right after the Montserrat arrival, with Mira leading a war-games exercise that quickly becomes anything but theoretical. Xaden and Dain are at each other's throats, Violet is caught between loyalty and a growing, undeniable connection, and the walls of safety are about to come crumbling down. Buckle up, because this chapter is a storm.

The morning air in the war room is thick with unspoken hostility. Every time Xaden shifts in his chair beside Violet, Dain's glare sharpens like a blade. Mira, too, watches the marked rider with the quiet suspicion of a hawk circling prey—she hasn't spoken a word to him since last night, her eyes lingering on the rebellion relic at his neck with a cold, assessing look. And Violet? She's a mess of contradicting emotions. She can feel Xaden's presence like a magnetic pull, each breath he takes a drumbeat in her chest, and it's driving her mad.

Mira, ever the pragmatist, tries to focus the squad with a Battle Brief exercise. She pins a crimson flag near the Cygnisen border and challenges them to imagine a newly fortified enemy keep. The young riders fumble with the hypothetical, arguing about protocol and wooden fortresses, until Mira cuts through their naivety with a brutal truth: "Everything you're taught at Basgiath is theory. Things out here don't always go according to plan." She reminds them that third-years are often called into active service, and the color drains from Dain's face. Xaden gives a sarcastic thumbs-up, and the tension escalates.

Mira passes out wooden dragon figurines, tasking the squad to plan an assault using their signets in unison. Dain immediately seizes command, but Liam argues that Xaden, as wingleader, should lead. Xaden, in a move both magnanimous and infuriating, pretends to step aside, draping his arm across the back of Violet's chair—a gesture that makes Dain's teeth grind audibly. "Don't be a dick," Violet whispers. Xaden's lips quirk. "You haven't even seen me start to be a dick."

And then, the impossible happens. His voice floods her mind without his lips moving. *"You're staring. It's going to get awkward in about thirty seconds if you don't stop."* Violet's head snaps toward him, her mouth open in shock. He winks, and she nearly combusts. He explains that their dragons' bond links them, and he's just now realizing the perks of mental communication. The sheer intimacy of it—his voice in her head, his laughter echoing where no one else can hear—sets her heart pounding.

Dain, seething, challenges Xaden's presence. "You never considered that it was you I couldn't stay away from?" Xaden murmurs to Violet, and she jabs him in the bicep. Their silent, electric banter continues as the squad plans the assault. Violet, frustrated with Dain's blind spots, finally snaps, telling him to use Xaden's shadow wielding to black out the area. Xaden lifts a hand, and shadows pour from beneath their seats, plunging the room into midnight darkness. Violet's heart leaps into her throat—then a ghost of a touch, a whisper of his presence, brushes her cheek. *"Relax. It's just me."* Just him, she thinks, is terrifying.

The shadows recede, leaving everyone pale and shaken. Even Mira stares at Xaden like he's a threat to be neutralized. Violet's stomach knots. She tries to mentally push a retort at him but gets nothing—their connection seems one-sided for now. She appeals to Tairn, who tells her to shield him out or learn to talk back. Easier said than done.

The exercise concludes with a grudging acknowledgment of Xaden's power, and then Mira dismisses the squad, commanding Dain, Xaden, and Violet to the hallway. She throws up a sound shield and rips into Dain with a fury that makes Violet cringe. She calls him out for letting his personal jealousy poison his leadership, reminding him how badly he wants to be wingleader. "You're blowing it, Dain. Figure your shit out." Dain, humbled, nods at Violet. She nods back, the fragile thread of their friendship straining but not yet broken.

Then Mira turns on Xaden. "Is this what she can expect next year?" She warns Violet that Xaden's power and their dragons' bond will always drag her away from training, that she'll never reach her potential if she lets him overshadow her. "He might wield shadows, Violet, but give him his way, and you'll become one." Xaden steps forward, his voice low and dangerous. "You're not listening. I. Am. Here. I left my post, my wing, my executive officer—for her. She's not missing out on shit." Mira scoffs, but then Violet blurts out her deepest shame: she can't keep her seat on Tairn without his help.

Mira recoils, horrified. "How the hell can you not?" The words are daggers. Violet shouts back, "Because I'm not you!" The silence that follows is heavy with years of unspoken distance. Mira softens, insisting Violet isn't something to be fixed, but the wound lingers. Xaden quietly offers that Violet is getting better, and Mira's gaze hardens again, about to unleash another warning—when both of their dragons scream a chilling alarm: *"There's a drift of gryphons headed this way!"*

The wards are down. Mira shouts for them to flee. "If you love me, Violet, you'll go." She hugs her sister fiercely, then turns to Xaden. "Get her out of here." Xaden snarls that he's the best weapon they have, but Mira is unmovable. "Get her to safety, Violet. Don't die. I'd hate to be an only child." She runs toward the roof, and Violet screams after her, clawing at Xaden's iron grip as he half-carries her down the stairs.

"No! I can't leave her!" Violet fights, but Xaden is unstoppable. He drags her to the turret, demanding she climb. Dain, too, forces her to see reason: "It's not just you we have to get out, Violet. Think of every other first-year. You want Rhiannon's and Ridoc's and Sawyer's deaths on your hands?" The weight of responsibility slams into her. She climbs.

On the roof, squadmates mount their dragons one by one, launching into the sky. Dain gives Xaden a final, desperate look. "I'm trusting you to get her out." Xaden nods. Then it's just the two of them. Violet turns to him, begging to stay, to help Mira. His eyes are full of compassion, understanding—and resolve. Then his hands cup her face, and he kisses her.

The kiss is reckless, consuming, a stolen moment in the face of death. Violet gives in to it, her heart screaming that this might be the last taste of him. It's better than any fantasy, urgent and claiming and achingly tender all at once. When they break apart, panting, he presses his forehead to hers. "Leave for me, Violet." She whispers, "I will hate you for this." He nods, a flash of regret crossing his face. "Yeah. I can live with that."

Then his hands fall away, and Tairn's massive shadow engulfs them. Xaden drops to the ground, and Tairn's foreclaw sweeps Violet up, flinging her onto his back with practiced ease. "Hold on so we can outfly them." Behind her, Sgaeyl rises with Xaden on her back, and far below, a dozen gryphons descend upon the keep like locusts. Violet's heart shatters, leaving pieces of herself over Montserrat.

Two days later, Violet leans against the wall outside Professor Markham's office, her relic burning with irritation. She's barely slept, eaten, or spoken. Every ounce of her being is consumed by worry for Mira, and by a guilt so thick she can barely breathe. She hasn't done library duty, skipped breakfast, missed formation. She doesn't care. All she can do is wait for news.

The sound of footsteps makes her pulse spike. She looks up, hoping for a cream tunic—instead, Xaden appears, holding two steaming mugs. He walks toward her with that infuriating calm and asks, "Still hate me?"

"Absolutely," she lies. The word tastes like ash.

But the chapter closes with a haunting whisper from Brennan's book: *"Winning the War Games isn't about strength. It's about cunning. To know how to strike, you have to understand where your enemies—your friends—are most vulnerable. No one stays friends forever, Mira. Eventually those closest to us become our enemies in some way, even if it's through well-intentioned love or apathy, or if we live long enough to become their villains."*

War is coming. And Violet Sorrengail is standing in the crossfire.

**Reader's Impressions & Star Rating:**

This chapter absolutely gutted me in the best way. The tension was visceral—whether it was the silent battle of wills between Dain and Xaden, or the raw, desperate kiss before the escape, every scene crackled with emotional electricity. Violet's internal conflict between her loyalty to Mira, her complicated history with Dain, and her terrifying, undeniable connection to Xaden is masterfully written. Watching her confront her own frailty (her inability to hold her seat) and then be forced to flee while her sister faces death was heart-wrenching. And the mental communication reveal? Chills. The shadow-wielding moment? Terrifying and magnificent. This chapter brilliantly balances action, romance, and character depth, setting the stage for a storm of consequences.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rating: 4.9 / 5 Stars

**Next Chapter Prediction:**

Violet is about to crack. The guilt, the worry for Mira, and her unresolved feelings for Xaden are a powder keg. I predict she'll confront Xaden about his true intentions, and her frustration will boil over into a dangerous emotional release—possibly triggering a new facet of her signet. Meanwhile, news from Montserrat will arrive, and it won't be good. Mira's fate will be uncertain, and Violet will have to decide whether to trust Xaden fully or push him away, even as the rebellion and the war close in around them. Something tells me the next chapter will force Violet to face the question Brennan left behind: who are her enemies, and who are her friends?
