Emma

Emma held the phone to her ear, pacing her bedroom as she spoke. “I had dinner with Mark

last night,” she said, trying to ke ep her tone casual, as if the confession weren’t tangled with

emotions she didn’t fully understand.

There was a pause on the other end of the line. “Dinner?” Claire’s voice was incredulous.

“Emma, you... you had dinner with him?”

Emma sighed, closing her eyes. “Yes, Claire. It was just dinner. With the kids.” She could

already feel the defensive edge cre eping into her voice.

“Are you really going to tell me that you’re doing this ‘for the kids’?” Claire’s words were

sharp, cutting into the thin layer of composure Emma had managed to build up. “Emma, he

cheated on you. You saw him with her. And now you’re sitting down to dinner with him like

nothing happened?”

Emma gripped the phone tighter, a knot forming in her chest. “I don’t need a lecture, Claire.

You don’t understand how complicated this is.”

“Complicated? Emma, it’s only complicated because you’re letting him twist it that way. He’s

trying to weasel his way back into your good graces, and you’re giving him an open door,”

Claire retorted, her tone softening only slightly. “I just don’t want you to get hurt again.”

Emma’s jaw clenched as she swallowed the flood of emotions bubbling to the surface. “You

don’t think I know that? You don’t think I feel every bit of what he did, Claire? I don’t need you

to remind me of that.”

“I’m not trying to remind you,” Claire said, her voice tight, like she was holding something

back. “I’m just... worried. You deserve better than this, Emma. Don’t let him take that away

from you.”

Emma exhaled, feeling a mix of anger and hurt. “You may not understand it, but it’s my life. I

don’t need your approval on who I have dinner with.”

A heavy silence settled between them. Claire’s sigh was barely audible, but Emma could feel

the disappointment radiating through the phone. “Alright, fine,” Claire said finally, her tone

resigned. “Just... don’t lose yourself in trying to make this okay, okay?”

Emma’s voice softened, but the hurt lingered. “I know what I’m doing, Claire. I just wish you’d

trust me on that.”

“Always, Em,” Claire r eplied, her voice gentler now, though Emma could still sense the tension

in her words. “But I’ll be here—no matter what.”

Emma swallowed, nodding even though Claire couldn’t see it. “Thanks, Claire,” she

murmured, a flicker of warmth cutting through the ache in her chest. “I’ll talk to you later.”

They hung up, but the unresolved tension lingered, leaving Emma feeling raw and unsettled

as she stared at the darkened screen, alone with her thoughts.
