Emma

Emma sat across from Rachel at her kitchen table, cradling a warm mug between her hands

as she glanced toward the living room where Liam and Sophie were playing, their laughter

and chatter filtering softly into the room. She took a breath, looking back at Rachel, her face

etched with the conflict that had been gnawing at her for days.

“I just don’t know what to do with all of this,” Emma whispered, ke eping her voice low. “My

heart still loves him, Rachel, I don’t even know how to turn that off. But... there are moments

when it just hits me, and it’s like this wave of anger and hurt just hits me all over again. How

am I supposed to let him back into my life when it hurts me like this?”

Rachel nodded, her expression sympathetic. She reached across the table, placing a

comforting hand on Emma’s. “That’s completely understandable, Emma. You don’t have to

rush. Love and anger can coexist. It’s part of healing, and it’s okay to feel conflicted.”

Emma bit her lip, her eyes dropping to the table. “Sometimes, I feel so guilty for even

considering it,” she admitted, barely audible. “Like I’m betraying myself by wanting to forgive

him. And then other times... I just miss him so much it hurts.”

Rachel squeezed her hand, her voice gentle but steady. “You’re not betraying yourself, Emma.

You’re just trying to find a way to make sense of all this. Healing isn’t about choosing one

feeling over another—it’s about letting them both be there without feeling guilty.”

Emma nodded slowly, her heart heavy with the weight of Rachel’s words. She opened her

mouth to respond when she heard a soft patter of footst eps. Sophie toddled into the kitchen,

her big eyes sle epy as she made her way to Emma.

“Mommy,” Sophie murmured, wrapping her little arms around Emma’s legs, seeking comfort.

Emma’s heart melted as she scooped Sophie up, settling her on her lap. Sophie nestled in, her

tiny hands clutching at Emma’s shirt, and Emma brushed her daughter’s hair back, savoring

the warmth of her.

“Hey, sweet girl,” Emma murmured, her voice filled with affection. “Are you having fun with

Liam?”

Sophie nodded, rubbing her eyes. “But I needed a hug,” she said, her voice soft.

Emma chuckled, pressing a gentle kiss to Sophie’s forehead. “I’ll always have hugs for you,

sweetheart.”

Rachel gave Emma a knowing smile, understanding the unspoken shift as they fell into a

comfortable silence, letting the heaviness of their earlier conversation rest. For a moment,

Emma felt a flicker of calm as she held Sophie, the love she had for her children grounding

her, reminding her of the strength she had inside.

Once Sophie settled back into the living room, Emma turned back to Rachel, her voice just

above a whisper. “It’s moments like these that make me wonder if I’m strong enough to try

again. Not for him, but for us.”

Rachel nodded, her gaze steady. “And that’s enough, Emma. Just take it one day at a time.

You’re allowed to want happiness—however it looks for you.”

Emma gave a small, grateful smile, feeling just a little more certain that maybe, someday,

she’d find her way through this maze of emotions— one quiet, tender moment at a time.

Emma sat on the edge of the bed, her fingers hovering over her phone as she stared at Mark’s

name on the screen. She’d told herself she’d call him tonight, that she needed to check in

about the kids’ school schedules and a few upcoming appointments. But even as her thumb

hovered over the call button, she couldn’t shake the nerves fluttering in her chest. Taking a

de ep breath, she pressed “Call” and held the phone to her ear, listening to the ringing on the

other end.

He picked up on the third ring. “Emma?” His voice was soft, cautious, as if he were testing the

waters.

“Hey, Mark,” she r eplied, her tone steady, if not entirely warm. “I just wanted to talk about a

few things for the kids. Liam has his science project due next week, and Sophie’s got her

check-up on Friday.”

“Yeah, I remember. I’m planning to help Liam this weekend with his project. I’ve got a whole

afternoon blocked out for him. And I can take Sophie to her appointment if you want,” he

offered, his voice filled with a gentle eagerness she hadn’t expected.

Emma paused, absorbing his words. There was something in his tone—an attentiveness,

maybe even a hint of relief at being able to help. It was strange to hear it now, this careful,

almost tentative version of Mark, and it made her heart ache in a way she hadn’t anticipated.

“Thank you,” she said softly. “I think that would be good for her. She... she asks about you a

lot.” The words slipped out before she could think about them, but it felt right, even if it hurt.

A silence stretched between them, each of them caught in their own thoughts. “I think about

them all the time,” Mark r eplied, his voice barely above a whisper. “And you too, Emma. I

know things aren’t... easy, and I don’t want to overst ep, but I miss you. I miss us.”

Emma closed her eyes, feeling a wave of conflicting emotions rise up. “Mark... I don’t know.

Sometimes, I think we might be able to find a way through this. And then other times...” She

paused, swallowing the

lump in her throat. “Other times, I feel like I can’t forgive you. I feel stuck, like I don’t know

how to move forward.”

He let out a heavy sigh. “I understand,” he said, his voice steady but tinged with sadness. “And

you don’t have to decide anything, Emma. I know I’ve broken something that might never

heal, but I want you to know that I’m here. However you need me to be. Even if it’s just for the

kids, I’ll be there.”

Another silence, filled with unsaid words and lingering regrets. Emma took a breath, feeling

some of the tightness in her chest loosen. “I don’t know what the future holds, Mark. But

thank you for... understanding. For trying.”

Mark’s voice softened, filled with a tentative hope. “Emma, I’ll ke ep trying, no matter how

long it takes. Even if all I can give you now is space, I’ll do it.”

She nodded, even though he couldn’t see her, feeling a strange, bittersweet calm settle over

her. “Goodnight, Mark.”

“Goodnight, Emma,” he r eplied, and she could hear the warmth in his voice, as if her words

had given him a small sliver of hope. She ended the call, sitting quietly in the dim light of her

room, feeling the weight of both the distance and the possibilities that lay between them.
