Mark Mark sat at the kitchen table, his fingers tapping absently on his coffee mug as he waited for Emma to come downstairs. Therapy had forced him to confront things about himself he hadn’t wanted to admit, the subtle ways he’d always put his own ambitions first, telling himself that the stability and success he pursued were for the family, when, in truth, they’d often been about his own pride. The realization had hit him hard, and not without resistance. But as he’d worked through it, he’d started to see that being a good partner, a good father, wasn’t about bringing home the biggest paycheck or climbing to the highest rung. It was about showing up, about being there, consistently and wholly, for the people he loved. When Emma finally entered the kitchen, Mark looked up, the familiar warmth of seeing her tempered with a new steadiness, a calm he hadn’t felt in a long time. “Hey,” he said, offering her a small, genuine smile. “Got a minute?” Emma poured herself a cup of coffee and nodded, a little wary but rec eptive. “Sure. What’s on your mind?” Mark took a de ep breath, gathering his thoughts. “I wanted to talk to you about... your career, actually. I’ve been thinking about it a lot and —” he hesitated, choosing his words carefully. “I know you’ve taken on so much with the kids, with balancing work and everything else. And I guess... I just wanted to ask where you see yourself going, career-wise. What you want for yourself.” Emma looked surprised, her eyes widening slightly as she processed his words. “Honestly? I hadn’t thought that far ahead. Things got so busy with the kids, with... everything.” He nodded, understanding her hesitation. “I know I haven’t always been the best at... at giving you the room to think about it, either. But if you wanted to pursue more—promotions, new opportunities—I want you to know I’m here for that. For whatever you want to do.” She regarded him thoughtfully, as if trying to gauge his sincerity. He felt a momentary flash of vulnerability, hoping she could see he meant it. “I’ve spoken with my boss,” he continued, “about shifting to hybrid work. I can be here to handle more drop-offs, pickups, make sure things are covered with the kids. I know that means I’ll probably miss out on some promotions of my own, but I’ve realized...” He paused, feeling the weight of his words settle around him. “I’ve realized that being here for you and the kids is more important than being on some fast track. I already earn more than enough for us to live in comfort. I don’t need to ke ep earning more to show I love you.” Emma gasped at this statement. He wondered if she understood how messed up he was. “I want to offer you more than just financial support,” he told her. “I want to be the person you can rely on, to support you however you need.”

Emma was quiet. He could see the surprise in her eyes, mixed with a flicker of something else—pain, maybe, or pity. It was hard to tell. “Thank you, Mark,” she said slowly. “I didn’t expect... I mean, I didn’t know you’d thought about this so much.” He shrugged, feeling the intensity of the moment but trying to ke ep himself grounded. “I know I haven’t always put us first, Em. I’ve let you down in so many ways, and I see that now. I let work, my own ego, and... my own selfishness get in the way. I thought I was ke eping us steady, but I was just breaking us apart.” His voice dropped, thick with remorse. “I don’t deserve to be forgiven for what I did to you. I betrayed you in the worst way, and I can’t undo that. But I’m here now, and I’ll be here, for you and the kids, however you need me—even if it’s just to show you that I understand how much I’ve broken.” Emma looked down, her fingers tracing the rim of her coffee cup as if absorbing his words, letting them sink in. After a long silence, she glanced up, her expression soft but guarded. “I think... I’d like that, Mark. I don’t know what I’ll want tomorrow, or next week, but it helps to know you’re here. That maybe... you can be there for me like I needed you to be.” He reached across the table, his hand brushing hers, and when she didn’t pull away, he gave her fingers a gentle, steady squeeze. “I’ll be here, Em,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “Every day, however you need me. I’ll ke ep trying, ke ep showing you that you can count on me this time.” For the first time in what felt like ages, he saw a flicker of belief in her eyes—a fragile glimmer that maybe, despite everything, they could begin to rebuild, grounded in honesty and in the genuine partnership he’d failed to give her before. It was small, but it was enough to ke ep him going. Mark glanced at the clock, setting down his coffee with a quick smile at Liam, who was finishing his cereal, nose practically buried in a comic book he’d sneaked to the table. It had been a couple of months now since he’d shifted to hybrid hours, taking on the kids’ after-school routines and all the little details that came with them. It had been an adjustment, yes, but as he sat here watching them over breakfast, he felt more connected than ever to their daily lives— and to Emma—in ways he hadn’t in years. And then there was Emma. Watching her manage it all, effortlessly balancing mother and career woman as she moved between reminding Sophie to finish her toast and checking her work emails on her phone, left him in awe. She was beautiful and graceful, so damn capable, and he couldn’t help the fire that flickered every time he saw her like this. He wanted her, with a longing that seemed to de epen every day. He wondered if she would let him close like that again, if he’d ever have the privilege of touching her again the way he craved. “Hey, Liam,” he said, trying to steady himself, even as his gaze k ept drifting to Emma. “Did you pack your reading log for class today? You don’t want to get another reminder from Ms.

Patterson, right?” Liam’s head snapped up, and he nodded quickly. “Oh, yeah! Thanks, Dad. I’ll get it right now.” He hopped off his chair and dashed to his backpack, rummaging around until he triumphantly held up the reading log. Mark couldn’t help but smile, feeling a strange pride swell in his chest for these small, ordinary details of their lives. Turning to Sophie, who was determinedly stirring her juice with a spoon, Mark reached over, gently taking it from her. “Sophie, remember we have your appointment with Dr. Lyons this afternoon, okay? We’ll get you checked up, and there’ll be stickers afterward.” Sophie’s eyes lit up as she nodded, a grin spreading across her face. “The ones with animals?” Mark laughed softly. “Yes, you can pick any animal you want. Maybe we’ll even get ice cream afterward if you’re feeling brave.” Emma looked over, her eyes meeting his in a way that sent a familiar ache through him, that soft smile still hovering on her lips. She didn’t say much, but there was something in her gaze—an acknowledgment, maybe a flicker of appreciation—that told him she saw how much he was trying, that maybe it even mattered to her. “Thanks for taking her, Mark,” she said quietly, her voice laced with a warmth that wasn’t lost on him. “I know it’s a lot to balance.” Mark felt regret mixed with gratitude. She was thanking him for something he’d been oblivious to for years, a task she’d carried out every day, quietly and without praise. He cleared his throat, feeling the weight of what he wanted to say. He met her gaze, trying to ke ep the longing he felt under control. “I’m glad to help, Em. Whatever you need.” Did she realize? Did she know that he could see her now, truly see her? “Emma,” he said softly, meeting her gaze, “you have no idea how blind I was. I didn’t see it—just how much you were doing, how much you handled every single day, all those years while I barely noticed. You did everything for the kids, for us, without ever asking for thanks.” She looked at him, slightly taken aback, her eyes searching his, and he pressed on, hoping she’d feel the sincerity behind his words. “I didn’t fully appreciate it then, and I can’t change that. But I want to thank you now. For all those years. For every early morning, every late night, every school project and doctor’s appointment, everything I never thought twice about because I assumed you’d just take care of it. I’m so sorry for that, and I’m grateful. Truly.” “Thank you, Mark,” she said quietly, almost as if she didn’t want to let herself believe his words too de eply. “Everyone ready?” he asked, clapping his hands softly, trying to rally them without losing his focus on her. “Yes!” Liam said, proudly holding up his reading log.

And as he looked back at Emma one last time before they left, he couldn’t shake the way he burned for her, the way he wanted her, the way he’d give anything to be close to her again. But until then, he’d hold onto this, grateful for every glance, every moment, and for the hope that one day, she might let him in again.
