Lena

The final mediation session had a strange air of finality and renewal all at once. Lena sat in her usual seat at the

polished conference table, her hands resting lightly on the wood. Across from her, David sat relaxed but

attentive, a small, steady smile playing at his lips. Carla, the mediator, glanced between them, her pen poised

over her notebook, her brows slightly furrowed in confusion. The distance between them, marked by the

expanse of gleaming wood, once felt all too close for Lena. Now she wished she could close the space between

them, wished she could reach out and feel the warmth of his hand in hers, the grounding comfort of his

presence. The ache to touch him, and be touched by him, was almost overwhelming. “I have to say,” Carla

began, her voice careful, “this session feels... different.” Lena straightened her shoulders and exchanged a

glance with David, whose gaze met hers with a warmth that steadied her. She turned back to Carla, her voice

clear. “We’ve reconciled.” Carla blinked, her pen halting mid-note. “Reconciled?” she r epeated, her tone

incredulous but not unkind. “As in...?” “We’re back together,” Lena clarified, a faint smile tugging at her lips.

“We’ve decided to work through this, to move forward together.” Carla leaned back slightly, her expression

softening into something resembling genuine surprise. “Well, that’s... unexpected,” she said, her

professionalism not quite masking her surprise. “Congratulations.” Carla regarded them both for a moment, her

pen tapping lightly against her notebook. “That’s... a big change. I don’t often see couples come to this kind of

resolution in mediation.” Her gaze flickered between them. “What brought this about, if you don’t mind me

asking?” Lena exchanged a glance with David before speaking, her tone measured but honest. “David... well,

David did a lot of apologizing,” she said, a faint wry smile tugging at her lips. “And not just once or twice. He’s

been showing me, day by day, that he understands exactly how much he hurt me—and how much work it takes

to rebuild trust.” David nodded, his expression somber. “I was an idiot,” he admitted plainly, his voice steady

but filled with self-awareness. “I made choices I can never undo, and I hurt the person I love most in the world.

There’s no excuse for it. But I’ve spent every moment since trying to be better—for her, and for myself. It’s not

just about saying sorry. It’s about proving, over and over again, that I’ve learned from my mistakes.” He

glanced at Lena, his gaze softening. “I’ve been humbled in ways I didn’t know were possible. I had to face what

I did, and what it cost us. And the fact that she’s even willing to give me another chance... that’s everything to

me. I won’t waste it.” Carla’s pen paused mid-tap, and she leaned forward slightly. “That’s a lot of reflection,

David. It’s rare for people to come to mediation with that level of accountability.” “Well, like I said,” he added,

a faint self-d eprecating smile on his lips, “I was an idiot. I don’t plan on being one again.” Lena nodded, her

voice steadier now. “We’ve agreed that the house isn’t the place we want to call home anymore. Too much of

the past is wrapped up in it.”

“We’re still selling it,” David said, his tone warm but resolute. “It doesn’t r epresent the future we’re building.

For now, we’re staying in her apartment, but we’ll find a new place—together. Somewhere that’s just ours.”

Lena nodded, her hands clasping lightly on the table. “We’ll be staying in my apartment for now, but we’ll start

looking for a new home together.” David smiled softly, his gaze fixed on Lena. “Home is wherever she is, for

me.” His voice was gentle but unwavering. “It wasn’t easy to get here, but I’ll do whatever it takes to make this

work. She’s the most important person in my life.” Lena felt her chest tighten at his words, a familiar warmth

spreading through her. The weight on her shoulders felt lighter, as if the pieces of her world were finally

coming back together. Carla set her pen down, a small smile gracing her lips. “Well, I’m happy for you both.

Truly. It’s not often I see this kind of outcome in my line of work.” She paused, her professional demeanor

softening. “I wish you both the best.” “Thank you,” Lena said, her voice steady but laced with emotion. As they

stood to leave, Lena felt David’s hand lightly brush against hers. She didn’t pull away. Instead, she intertwined

her fingers with his, holding on tightly as they walked out together. The future didn’t feel like a daunting

question mark. It felt like a blank page, waiting for them to write their next chapter—together.
