# Chapter 14: A Morning Date, A New Bed, and a Dangerous Spark

Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? I hope you're ready for another emotional rollercoaster, because today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 14 of **"Just for the Plot"** — a chapter that takes us from ridiculously early smoothie dates to warm, dangerous nights full of tacos, new furniture, and feelings that neither of our characters seem willing to name. Buckle up, because things are about to get complicated in the best possible way.

Let me set the scene for you: It is the ungodly hour of four forty-five in the morning, and our beloved Bower is dragging her half-dead carcass out of bed. Why? Because she, in a moment of sheer lunacy, agreed to a **morning date** with Cougar, the professional football player she met through Bennett. Five thirty in the morning. At a smoothie bar. Next to his stadium, because he has to be at work at seven. Because apparently, professional athletes don't get to sleep in like normal human beings.

Bower is absolutely not cute at five thirty. She says so herself. No one is. She blasts her face with cold water, praying her eye bags away, slaps on some tinted moisturizer and blush, apologizes to her eyes as she coats them in mascara, and throws her hair up in a messy clip. The outfit? Leggings, an oversized off-the-shoulder sweater, and what the British would call a smart pair of trainers. She's channeling the British for absolutely no reason other than the fact that she's delirious and desperately wants her pillow.

Her Uber drops her off, and she stumbles out like a zombie on a mission. Through the window, she spots Cougar already seated at a bar-height table with two smoothies. He ordered hers ahead of time, which was considerate. She adjusts her top to show a little more shoulder because, you know, effort, and heads inside.

Cougar looks up, spots her, rises, and places a kiss on her cheek. "I'm surprised you're here," he says.

"Did you think I was going to stand you up?" she asks, hiding her exhaustion behind a smile.

"Not many women would meet at five thirty in the morning for a date."

"Well, I'm not like many women."

"I see that," he smirks, handing her a berry blast with whey protein. She takes a sip, letting the cold attempt to wake her up. Should have ordered the coffee one. What was she thinking? Clearly, she wasn't thinking at all.

The conversation moves along. He asks what she's been up to. She tells him about moving into her apartment two weeks ago, how she's been too busy with her boss to properly set things up, how her friend Gabby is visiting and she can't have her seeing a box-filled apartment. A disappointment would be unacceptable.

And then Cougar surprises her. Completely. He offers to help. Bower is shocked. Last time she was out with him, she'd have bet her entire paycheck that Cougar is *not* the type of guy who lends a hand. Which raises a question she doesn't even want to answer for herself: knowing that, why did she agree to go out with him again? She has no idea. But he's already surprised her. Maybe morning Cougar is more human. Maybe he needed to be pulled away from the bar atmosphere. Perhaps... he's less playboy-ish before he fully wakes up.

She politely declines his help—Bennett is already going to help her tonight with some things. Cougar's ears perk up. "Who's Bennett?"

"From the Bombers. The guy who gave me your number."

"Oh, right." He chuckles, sipping his smoothie. "It's early, brain isn't fully working." Then he asks, with a casual glance away, "How close are you guys?"

Bower reads between the lines instantly. He's checking for competition. She laughs and tells him Bennett is just a friend. But she's not about to let that slide—she asks Cougar about his competition, and he neatly dodges it. Then he tells her he hasn't been out with anyone since their date.

She presses a hand to her chest, flattered. "But feel free to explore. I don't want to tie you down."

"You don't?" One brow raises.

"I'm still getting to know you," she says, smiling. "I need to see if you're worth tying down."

Oh yeah, that brings a joyful challenge to his eyes. He asks how he can prove he's worth it.

"Not agreeing to a five thirty in the morning date is the first thing you can do."

"Hey, this was your idea. I told you it would be early."

"I didn't think *this* early." She leans forward and whispers, "I almost fell asleep in the Uber on the way over here."

They banter. She teases him about the first date, how he bragged about football stats endlessly, and for a girl who couldn't care less about sports, it came off as extremely douchey. He pretends to be offended. But then he smirks and says, "Women fawn at those stats."

"And what was the first thing you learned this morning? I'm not like other women."

"I guess you're not," he says, and there's something genuine in that smirk.

Morning date: somewhat of a success. Or at least, Bower's verdict is that he seems more down-to-earth before noon. We'll see.

---

From one date to another. But first, a wardrobe moment. Bower is at Adalade's beautiful house, presenting a stunning burgundy cashmere sweater she found while shopping for her employer. Adalade marvels at the rich color. Bower imagines it with brown boots and a brown silk skirt—perfect. Adalade loves it, and Bower is proud. She's about to pack everything up and head out for the evening, but Adalade stops her.

"I was hoping to talk with you," Adalade says. "I've been invited to a dinner. A quaint one—no more than twenty people. And I was hoping that I could bring you along."

Bower brightens. Thursday night? Sure, no problem. She loves drama, and Adalade clearly has an ulterior motive.

"There is going to be a man there," Adalade confesses. "His name is Draco Humphrey. And I was hoping to catch his eye."

Bower freezes. Excuse me? Adalade? The woman who swore she'd never want another man in her life ever again?

Adalade waves her hand dismissively, but she's blushing. "Oh please, do not make a big deal of this."

"Adalade, I thought you never wanted another man in your life ever again."

"That was until I found out Draco would be at this dinner."

So here's the story: Adalade went to high school with Draco. He took her to a dance once, but his family relocated and she never saw him again. Her dear friend Gert says he moved to San Francisco and she invited him to the dinner. And Adalade—the woman of dignity, the retired widow, the one who claimed to be done with romance—is absolutely determined to catch his eye.

She doesn't want Bower to go as her assistant. That would be desperate, pretentious. No, she wants Bower to bring a date, so it looks like they're both part of the dinner party. Bower understands. A wingman. A cover.

Bower ponders her options. "I think I could maybe ask Cougar."

"Who is Cougar?"

"A guy I've been sort of seeing. We've only had two dates, one of them being this morning." She rolls her eyes. "Don't get me started. My idea and it was terrible. Five thirty in the morning. Bad choices all around."

"What does a guy with the name Cougar do?"

"He plays for the San Francisco Foghorns."

Adalade straightens up. "My dear, do you only know professional athletes?"

"Does seem that way, doesn't it? Bennett actually set me up with him."

"And how do we feel about Cougar?"

Bower shrugs. "I think he has good moments."

"'Good moments'? That doesn't seem too convincing."

They're still getting to know each other. Bower couldn't get a good assessment this morning because she was so tired. But, surprisingly, he seemed more normal than the other night. So, they'll see.

"Do you think he'd be embarrassing at the dinner? Because that is not something I can afford."

Bower shakes her head. "No. If anything, he might be able to help because he's a professional football player, and that's intriguing."

"True. Well, if you think he'll do, then I say we go for it."

It's settled. Bower will bring Cougar to the dinner, she'll work on preparations, and Adalade—proud—declares that the burgundy cashmere sweater might be exactly what she needs. Bower is proud too. She offers a warm smile and heads out, promising to see Adalade in the morning.

---

Now, the best part of the night. Bower enters her apartment and immediately smells tacos. Bennett, her neighbor, her friend, the man who gave her Cougar's number, is popping out of the kitchen looking *so freaking cute*—joggers, a plain black shirt, a backward hat. They exchanged keys to each other's apartments, which has been incredibly useful. Also, completely secret, Bower might have snuck into his place once and spent the night because she loves his bed so much. Shhh. Don't tell him. Not that he'd mind. She fears if she told him, he'd just give her his bed.

She walks up to him and wraps her arms around him in a big hug. "Thank you, I'm starving."

His hands slowly slide down her back as she starts to pull away, but not fully. She looks up into his eyes. The scruff on his face is thicker than normal. His eyes look tired, like he hasn't slept really well.

"Are you okay?" she asks.

"Great," he says, his thumb rubbing over her back.

"You look tired."

"Can't hear that enough," he says with a laugh.

She apologizes—she didn't mean it like that. He reassures her it's fine, expects an early night to catch up on sleep. "Which, speaking of sleep," he says, taking her hand, "I have something to show you."

He pulls her toward the bedroom. He opens the door. And there it is.

A brand-new midcentury modern bed.

Oh my God. Bennett, what did you do?

"Do you like it?"

"Of course I like it." She moves closer, running her hand over the white oak that matches the two nightstands on either side perfectly. It's gorgeous. "Why did you do this?"

"Because you needed a bed and I know you would have been embarrassed if Gabby saw your place without one."

Bennett, this is... this is really sweet. She closes the distance between them, cups his face, and places a soft kiss on his cheek. "Thank you so much."

He clears his throat. "Of course."

"Have you tested it out?"

"No, didn't want to get my scent all over your bedding."

"I wouldn't mind." She winks. "I like your scent." Then she throws herself onto the bed and molds right into the blankets and mattress. "Oh my God, Bennett."

He tugs on the back of his neck. "Can you refrain from saying, 'Oh my God, Bennett,' while lying in your bed?"

She laughs. "Don't be a prude." She taps the bed next to her, welcoming him in. He joins her, moving in close so their shoulders are touching.

"Isn't it amazing?"

"It is." His fingers brush up against hers. "Almost feels exactly like mine."

"It does." She pauses for a moment. "Wait..." She turns toward him, propping her head up on her hand, staring down at him. "Bennett..."

"What?" He can't hide his smile.

"Did you give me your bed?"

"No."

"Bennett..."

He laughs. "I like you, Bower, but I don't like you that much. I might have purchased some things to resemble my bed, though, because after I slept here the other night, it was no match to what I have going on in my apartment."

"I know this, but you didn't have to purchase things for me."

He shrugs like it's no big deal. "If I can't spend money on the people I like, then what the hell am I going to spend money on?"

"I'll pay you back."

"The hell you will. This is a housewarming present, and if you pay me back, I'll be thoroughly insulted."

Ugh, stubborn man. "Fine, then at least let me pay you back for the tacos."

He rolls his eyes. "Sure, Bower. You can pay me back for the tacos."

"Ha, I knew I'd crack you."

Chuckling, he gets out of bed and tugs her along with him. "Speaking of tacos, they're getting cold. Come on."

His fingers tangle with hers as he pulls her toward the kitchen, and she allows it because—let's be honest—she's hungry.

To her surprise, he lifts her up and places her on the cold quartz counter.

"I have a table, you know."

"Yeah, that's full of boxes. This is easier." He hands her a to-go box and picks one up himself, flipping open the lid to reveal five shredded-beef tacos.

The smell is indescribable. Bower flips open her lid to find three tacos, and she silently laughs because he knows she wouldn't have consumed five like him. The dipping sauce, he warns, is messy but fucking phenomenal. She watches him dip his taco and take a huge bite, nearly devouring half of it. Jesus.

"Oh my God, it smells amazing."

"I also got some pastries for dessert," he says.

That makes her laugh, because she wouldn't expect anything less from him.

"Surprised you didn't start off with dessert."

"We have to earn it by putting this apartment together." He glances around. "Which, by the way, what did you do while I was gone?"

She scoffs. "Uh, I did a lot."

"Uh-huh. And what exactly did you do?"

"I organized my clothes, which was a big job, and I put away kitchen stuff."

He nods. "Okay, that's progress."

"See? I did things."

"Well, we can finish everything else tonight."

"I just need some help hanging some things. Don't worry about the boxes. I can handle that."

"Why don't you let me decide what we do and what we don't do?"

"When did you become the boss?"

"When you decided to ask me for help."

He winks. And it's so... not adorable, not cute... Good God, is it... is it **hot**?

When he smirks, she feels her stomach erupt in butterflies.

Yup. Yup, it's hot.

And that, my dear readers, is the state of things. Bower is dating Cougar, a man who's slowly revealing a human side she wasn't expecting. She's about to take him as her date to Adalade's romantic mission—a dinner party where her employer plans to catch the eye of an old high school flame. And meanwhile, Bennett keeps giving her furniture, feeding her tacos, winking at her, holding her close, making her stomach do flips... and she's "just hungry." Sure, Bower. Sure.

**Reader's Impressions & Star Rating:**

Honestly, this chapter is a masterpiece of delicious tension. We get a softer, relatable Bower who is just as messy and tired as the rest of us at 4:45 AM. The morning date with Cougar is surprisingly charming—he's more human in the morning, and I'm genuinely curious about him now. But the real magic is in the scenes with Bennett. That bed reveal? My heart melted. The counter tacos? The wink? The "is it hot?" moment? I was literally kicking my feet. You can feel the chemistry sizzling between them, and Bower is clearly starting to realize it, even if she's not ready to admit it. This chapter balances humor, heart, and slow-burn romance perfectly. The Adalade subplot adds a fun, quirky twist that promises drama ahead. I am completely invested.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.9 / 5 Stars

**Next Chapter Prediction:**

The dinner party is coming, and I can already feel the chaos brewing. Cougar will likely show up with his playboy charm, but something tells me he might not be as into Bower as he claims—or worse, he might actually be falling for her just as she's realizing her heart is pulling her toward a certain neighbor downstairs. Meanwhile, Adalade will reunite with Draco, and there will be drama. But the real explosion will happen between Bennett and Bower—especially if Bennett catches a glimpse of Bower with Cougar at the dinner, looking all cozy and date-like. Watch out, readers. Jealousy is coming, and it's going to be delicious.
