# Chapter 2: The Name Test, A Couch, and a Truckload of Hope
Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 2 of "Just for the Plot." And oh, what a chapter this is. We step directly into the heart and mind of Bennett—a man who is not just nervous, but absolutely *wired* with anticipation. Forget baseball stats and game-day pressure; the real heavyweight match happening here is between a grown man and a single stubborn piece of hair that refuses to lay flat. Yes, that's how our story begins.
Let's paint the picture, shall we?
We find Bennett in his bathroom, doing battle with a cowlick that simply will not submit. He pats it down once, twice, three times—and nothing. So, he does what any sensible, slightly panicking man would do: he grabs a Bombers cap and plants it on his head. Because, in his mind, she's only ever known him wearing a hat. So this is normal. Totally normal.
But nothing about this moment is normal for Bennett. His apartment has been scrubbed, vacuumed, lint-rollered, and spritzed with something that smells nice. He rearranged a candle on his coffee table until he nearly lost his mind, then swapped it for a book about baseball facts. He cleaned his framed jerseys from high school and the minor leagues—even though he almost took them down. And why? All for *her*.
Because Bower is coming. His sister's best friend. The woman eight years his senior. The one who dares to call him "Benny Boo Boo" without an ounce of shame. The one who has occupied his mind since he was a scrawny, awkward sixteen-year-old—back when his body didn't know what to do with itself, back when he was all bones and uncertainty. But now he's twenty-four, a major league baseball player, standing six-foot-three with muscles he's worked *so* hard to build. He wants to tower over her. He imagines her head meeting his chest while her arms wrap around his waist.
And honestly, my heart breaks for him a little, because underneath all that bravado, underneath the freshly cleaned apartment and the carefully chosen cologne, there's a man who is terrified. He's been in love with her for so long, and his track record is miserable. He watches her date other men from a distance, never making a move, then suffers in silence as she walks away with someone else. He knows the last time he saw her—over the holidays—she was telling Gabby about a guy with a foot fetish who kept giving her toe rings. He's hoping, desperately, that guy is out of the picture.
The minutes tick by, and his nervousness grows. Can he really do this? Can he actually make a move? He's had other women, sure, but none of them ever interested him. They were just attempts to fill a void. A void that only Bower can fill—and he knows it.
And then, there's a knock at the door.
His stomach drops. His palms sweat. "Fuck, keep it together," he tells himself.
But all of his self-coaching goes out the window the second he opens that door. Because there she is. Bower. Looking so impossibly beautiful that it takes every ounce of strength in him not to cup her cheek, bend down, and kiss her right then and there.
"Bennett!" she shouts, dropping her bags and walking right into his chest, her arms wrapping around him.
Fucking fulfilled. That's the only word for it. He sinks into her hold, breathing in that sweet coconut scent of hers. He memorizes everything—the feel of her wrapped around him, the softness of her, her very presence. He's done this before, every single time she's hugged him, storing away the memory like a treasure.
"Hey," he says softly, his hand cradling the back of her head for just a moment before she pulls back, her hands gripping his forearms as she looks up at him. Then she says the words that make his cheeks burn with heat: "Oh my God, you're so... muscular."
He plays it cool, of course. "That's what happens when you're required to hit up the weight room."
She pats his chest with a smirk. "Required? Please, you know you love it."
And just like that, she turns around to grab her bags, and Bennett allows himself a quick, stolen glance at the way her leggings frame her perfectly round ass and how her shirt rides up, teasing him with an inch of skin. He's a gentleman, though—or at least he tries to be—so he swoops in and takes her bags before she can protest, earning a playful remark about putting those muscles to good use.
Inside the apartment, she takes his hand and practically skips to the couch, pulling him down beside her. And now, up close, he takes her all in: her honey-blond hair in long waves around her shoulders, her light green eyes shining up at him. She's swapped her nose hoop for a small diamond, and she's traded her heavy eyeliner for just mascara with a hint of blush. Every detail is catalogued in his mind like a precious artifact.
"So tell me everything," she says with that stunning smile that gut-punches him.
Everything. Okay. Sure. How about the fact that he's been in love with her for eight years? No, no—too much, too fast. So instead, he asks a question right back, fidgeting with his hat. And of course, she hits him with the question he knows is coming: "Do you have any girls in your life?"
" Nope." Same answer every time.
"Seriously? No one?"
He shakes his head. "No one really catches my attention." *Besides you. You captured my attention.* The words are right there, stuck in his throat.
She teases him about not even trying, and he deflects with baseball talk. But then it's his turn to ask the question that actually matters—the one that makes his throat feel tight with nerves: "Do you have any guys in your life?"
She rolls her eyes dramatically and launches into the story of a guy she went on three dates with. He just wasn't doing it for her. And then she reveals the reason, with a warning: "Promise not to judge me?"
"D epends," he says playfully.
It turns out the poor guy failed the "name test." Bennett has no idea what that is, and his innocent confusion leads Bower to explain, with complete earnestness, that the name test is a very important compatibility check. You have to test the person's name on a moan. If it sounds good, you can move forward. If not, it's a dealbreaker.
And what was this man's name? Ebenezer. No joke. His friends called him Nezer.
"Jesus, that's not great either," Bennett says, laughing.
"Yeah, so tell me how I'm supposed to have this man's dick deep between my legs with 'give it to me hard, Ebenezer' coming off my lips?"
I need you to understand something here. Bennett is laughing, tugging at the back of his neck, but inside, he's a wreck. Because hearing Bower say "dick deep" has made him *slightly* hard. And now he's wondering—does *Bennett* pass the name test? He's also trying very hard not to think about her "perfect fucking tits," which she then gestures to while ranting about how her nipples are "made to poke against the fabric of my shirt, not hide."
Jesus. He's in trouble. So much trouble.
But Bower doesn't stop there. Oh no. She tells him she just finished reading a book where the female main character came just from nipple play. And she *grips his forearm* and asks him: "Have you ever come from just nipple play?"
No, Bennett hasn't. But he's pretty sure he could come just from *talking* about it right now.
She worries that her romance novels are setting her standards too high. Is it too much to ask for a man who passes the name test and can make her come from nipple play? It takes everything in Bennett to stay seated, because his answer is a resounding no—that's not too much to ask at all. "If she'd give me a chance, I'd love to try," he thinks.
He makes a mental note. The bar is set. And for the first time, he feels like he might actually have a shot.
Then Bower mentions that Gabby told her to stop reading her books, to which Bower apparently responded that it's easy for Gabby to say, given the "dick she has at home and how absolutely satisfied she is every time she mounts it." Bennett, quite reasonably, begs her not to talk about his sister and former coach's sex life. But Bower just waves a hand. "Oh, we're all adults."
She changes course and tells him she's hoping this move is a new chapter for her. She wants him, Benny Boo Boo, to be her wingman in a new town. She thanks him for helping her, tells him she checked out an apartment and loves it, and that if she gets it, she might just live here—close to someone she knows. She even offers to take care of his place while he's away on games.
Hope springs in his chest. He can't imagine a more perfect scenario. Well, actually he can. It would be Bower moving in *here*. With *him*. But he keeps his voice steady and says, "That would be awesome." Just cool, casual, unbothered Bennett.
But then she drops a bombshell: he has a game tonight, doesn't he? He admits he does, but he wanted to make sure she was settled first. She insists she's fine and announces that his couch is going to be incredibly comfortable for her to sleep on.
Wait. What? Bennett offers his bed—he just changed the sheets—but she pats his cheek and shoots him down. "That's not happening. Cute of you for thinking that, though. And don't even fight me on it. I don't need you acting all chivalrous. I like a good couch."
He tries to reason with her: "Yeah, but I slept on a couch for almost my entire life." Well, until Gabby gave up her bed for him every night so he could get solid sleep. His sister always sacrificed herself for him.
"And that's exactly why you deserve the bed," Bower says with a wink.
And then, just when he thinks he's managed to get his emotions under control, she sits on the armrest of the couch, loops her arm around him, rests her head against his, and holds up her phone in selfie mode. "We need to send a pic to Gabby. I didn't tell her I was moving, and this would be the perfect way."
"Smile," she says. He smiles. And she snaps the picture, stealing his breath and his sanity all at once.
She stares at the photo for a second, then glances at him with a playful wince: "Ooof, you're so handsome. Still don't understand how you don't have girls falling at your feet."
*Handsome.*
She stands up and texts Gabby, completely unaware that she just handed Bennett an entire truckload of hope. She's complimented his height before. His muscles. His build. But "handsome"—that's the first time. And to him, it means everything.
He's still sitting there on that couch, trying to calm the raging heat pulsing through him, when she disappears into her phone. But my dear readers, the damage is done. The hope has been seeded. And the game hasn't even started yet.

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating
Oh, this chapter was an absolute delight. We get to live entirely inside Bennett's head, and what a beautifully chaotic place it is. He's this big, muscular, accomplished major league baseball player, and yet a tiny piece of stubborn hair can send him into a spiral. He vacuums his couch multiple times and lint-rolls it, for goodness' sake. He rearranges candles until he gives up. He's hopelessly, desperately, head-over-heels in love with his sister's best friend, and he has no idea how to handle it.
And Bower? She's an absolute firecracker. She talks about the "name test" with a completely straight face, says "dick deep" without batting an eye, and casually asks if he's ever come from nipple play. She's bold, unfiltered, and hilarious. And the chemistry between them is electric—every stolen glance, every accidental innuendo, every moment of physical contact is charged with meaning for Bennett, even if Bower is completely oblivious.
The "handsome" moment at the end was pure gold. You can feel the shift inside him—that flicker of hope that maybe, just maybe, this time could be different. And her determination to sleep on his couch despite his protests? Adorable. The dynamic between them is so wonderfully messy: she sees him as her best friend's little brother, the "Benny Boo Boo" she can tease, while he sees her as the woman he's wanted for nearly a decade. It's the perfect setup for a slow, agonizing, beautiful burn.
I loved every minute of this chapter. Bennett's inner monologue is equal parts funny, vulnerable, and achingly relatable. He's a man out of his depth, and I'm here for every second of it.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.9 / 5 Stars
## Next Chapter Prediction
So, what's coming next? Bennett has a game tonight, and Bower is staying at his place while he's away. But the real question is: when he comes home, will he finally act on these feelings? That "handsome" comment has lit a fire of hope inside him, and I have a feeling he won't be able to stay on the sidelines much longer. Bower has made it clear she's ready for a "new chapter" in her life—and let's be honest, the universe has a sense of humor. With her moving to his town, with that couch she insists on sleeping on, and with Bennett's determination starting to build...
I predict we're in for some serious tension in Chapter 3. Maybe Bennett will come home from his game to find her still awake, all soft and comfortable in his space, and something will finally snap. Or maybe Bower will start to see him differently now that he's no longer that scrawny kid—she did call him handsome, didn't she? One thing's for sure: the line between "best friend's little brother" and "the man she can't stop thinking about" is about to get very, very blurry. Trust me, you won't want to miss it.
