# Chapter 43: The Reckoning

Let me set the scene for you. Bennett is standing at his apartment door, heart still pounding from a night with Bower that he can still feel, taste, and smell all over his body. He's thinking about her, about them, about how everything finally seems to be falling into place. And then he opens the door.
His sister's face comes into view.
Smiling. Excited. Looking for a surprised reaction.
Well, she's certainly fucking getting one. Because what the actual hell?
"Gabby... what... what are you doing here?"
"Good to see you too," she says with that signature grin. "Surprise!"
Yeah, you can fucking say that again.
And just when he thinks it can't get worse, Ryland walks up behind her with luggage in hand. Fuck. FUCK! His brother-in-law takes one look at him, clearly taking in his disheveled state, and asks if it was a rough night. Bennett is scrambling, trying to figure out how to get out of this mess without his sister discovering what's been happening right under her nose.
But Gabby is sharp. She's always been sharp. She sees him acting awkward, and her intuition kicks in. "Oh my God. Is she here?" she asks, trying to peek around him. Bennett quickly blocks her view, saying loudly, hoping Bower can hear, "No one is in here, Gabby."
The problem is, he smells like Bower. He's still covered in her. And his apartment might have evidence of her everywhere. His best move? Get them out. Take them to breakfast. Give Bower a chance to escape back to her own place.
And it almost works. If you can call a panicked plan being executed flawlessly "almost." But then, just as he's guiding them out the door, just as he's about to breathe a sigh of relief, Gabby announces she needs to use the bathroom.
Alarm bells ring through Bennett's entire body. "Ah, just go at the restaurant."
"No, don't be weird. I'll just go in your place."
And before he can stop her, she opens the door and barges right back in.
The minute Gabby sees her, everything shatters. There's Bower, standing frozen in the middle of the living room, wearing only Bennett's oversized T-shirt, looking like she's been caught in the worst possible way. Because she has. Gabby's face goes from confusion to hurt to pure betrayal in a matter of seconds.
"Are you kidding me?"
Ryland follows them in, takes in the scene, and whispers under his breath, "Fuck." Yeah, that's about right.
Gabby points at Bower but looks at Bennett. "Is this why you were trying to usher us away?"
Bennett tries to explain, tries to stay calm, but Gabby is already spiraling. She turns on Bower with all the pain of a friend betrayed. "You promised me. You promised you wouldn't go there with him. You looked me in the eyes and said you would never. You lied."
Bower's tears start spilling down her face. She tries to explain that it wasn't planned, but Gabby doesn't want to hear it. "We're supposed to be each other's person. Is that why you've been avoiding me, because you were fucking my brother and knew it was wrong?"
And then Bower does something that cracks Bennett's heart right down the middle. She nods and calls what they have a "quick fuck." She lets Gabby's words define her. "That's all I'm ever good at, right? No relationships, just fucking? I ruined an almost-decade relationship for a quick fuck with your brother."
Bennett watches in horror as she walks past him, out of the apartment, leaving him standing there with his heart being ripped from his chest. He can't let her go. Not like this. But there's something he has to do first.
He turns to face his sister, and the pain in her eyes is almost too much to bear. "Bennett, why?"
And this is where Bennett reveals the depth of what he's been feeling. He tells Gabby the truth that's been buried in his bones since he was sixteen years old. "Because I love her. Because I've loved her for a long goddamn time. And when she finally saw me as more than her best friend's little brother, when she saw me as a man who would do anything for her, she let me into her heart. And I took advantage of it, because I refused to let the woman I love go."
He makes it clear that he's the one who pushed. He's the one who pursued. He's the selfish prick who didn't care about promises when it came to getting the woman he's been in love with for so long. "I didn't fucking care, because I love her and I wanted her."
But Gabby dismisses it as infatuation, not love. And that lights a fire in Bennett that's been waiting to burn. He tells her exactly what infatuation is—it's what she felt for Ryland when they first started. And then he explains love. True love. His love for Bower.
"Love is what I feel for Bower. It's buried itself into the marrow of my bones, where I itch to see her, where I feel at ease when she's in my arms, where I'm content and satisfied knowing that I'm the one she's going to bed with and I'm the one she's waking up next to. This is not a fling. This is not a one-night fuck. This is real. This is love, and she feels the same way."
And then he delivers the emotional knockout punch: "You're better than that, Gabby, and I'm disappointed that you would treat someone you love in such a manner, angry or not. Broken promises and all. She deserved more than that."
He heads for the door, ready to chase after Bower when suddenly... she walks through it.
Tears still streaming down her cheeks, but with a bravado in her face that makes Bennett's heart swell with pride. She walks right up to him, places her hands on his chest, and looks him in the eyes. "I'm sorry. You know I love you. This isn't a quick fuck to me. You were never that to me. Ever."
She cups his cheek, and he thinks his heart might just fly out of his chest.
Then Bower takes his hand and leads him to Gabby. She stands tall, chin held high, and speaks her truth. She tells Gabby that this is real, everything about it. She tried to push him away every chance she got, tried to shut down her feelings, agonized over what it would do to her relationship with Gabby. But every day she felt pulled toward him, like the universe was shoving her in his direction. And when she gave in to that one moment, it only intensified everything.
She tells Gabby about the moment she realized Bennett was in love with her, how she saw it in every little thing he did. And then the most powerful part: "I wanted to protect our relationship, but I realized, as much as I love you... I love him more. And if you genuinely loved me the way you've said, then you would understand what I'm saying to you."
Bower declares that she sees her future with Bennett. She walked out that apartment door and realized that every step away from him was distancing herself from the life she wanted. And she wouldn't allow herself to do that. "I'm sorry that this is how you found out... but now that it's out in the open, I will not cower. I will not change because you're uncomfortable. I love you, Gabby, but this is my life, this is Bennett's life, and it's unfair for you to try to dictate how we live it."
Holy. Shit. Gabby asked Bower to protect Bennett... and she just fucking did.
With that stunning declaration, Bower says she's late for work and can't call in sick. She tugs Bennett toward the door, leads him out into the hallway, and with the door shut behind them, she pushes him against the wall and claims his mouth in a kiss that leaves them both breathless.
"I love you, and I'm sorry for a moment it seemed like I didn't."
Bennett shakes his head. "Don't apologize, beautiful, that was... fuck, thank you."
"Anything for you. You're it for me. You're my number one, above anything and anyone else. That won't change."
And in that moment, Bennett feels the final weight lift from his chest. All this time, he's felt like it's been an uphill battle, convincing and begging her to give him a chance. He's felt numb, anxious, nervous that he was coming on too strong. But now... now he knows she's officially and forever his.
She kisses him one more time and then takes off down the hallway, wearing only his shirt, leaving him standing there watching her disappear with pure adoration in his heart.
When he goes back inside, Gabby is still standing in the same spot, stunned and speechless. Ryland wisely excuses himself, and Bennett and Gabby sit down on the couch. She admits she doesn't know what to say, that she's still trying to comprehend everything.
They talk. Bennett explains how hard it's been, how Bower agonized over her feelings because she didn't want to hurt Gabby. He confesses that he was going to tell her the truth, but she beat them to it. He tells her it's been since the moment he met Bower, that what started as infatuation morphed into something so much deeper.
And then he says the words that change everything: "She's it for me, Gabby. And when the time is right, when she's ready, I will propose. I don't want anyone else. It's her and only her."
Gabby sits back, the shock clear on her face. "Oh my God, you're serious."
"Dead serious, sis. She's it. She's the only person I've ever loved and the only person I ever want to love."
A moment passes. And then Gabby's face softens. Tears stream down her face. "All I want is for you to be happy. We've been through so much together, so fucking much, and I just want you to have the happily ever after you deserve."
She accepts. She accepts them. She even jokes, tears threatening to fall, "Tell me how I can help you propose."
Bennett chuckles and wipes her tears away. "I don't think she's there yet, even though I am. But when I think she's ready, I'm coming to you."
"You better."
And they hug, the way siblings who have been through everything together should. The storm has passed. The truth is out. And for the first time in this entire journey, Bennett feels like he can finally breathe.
