# Chapter 14: The Sidewalk Confession That Broke the Fake Engagement

Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 14 of "Marriage on Madison Avenue." This is the chapter where a warm dinner party turns into a cold, honest reckoning, and two best friends discover that pretending can only last so long before the truth starts knocking. So get comfortable, because Audrey and Clarke are about to leave Naomi and Oliver's home—and step straight into the argument that changes everything.

The chapter opens on Saturday, February 1. Audrey has spent the entire dinner party wearing her brightest smile. She laughs at the right moments, compliments Naomi's fresh flowers, gushes over the food, and even enjoys watching the men struggle with delicate white wineglasses at the sink. On the surface, she is cheerful, easygoing Audrey. Beneath it, she is reeling. The only person who notices is Clarke—the very person who caused the storm inside her.

He murmurs, "You okay?" She nods. He asks again as he clears the table. She nods again, even as her brain screams no. She is not okay. She overheard Clarke telling the guys that Elizabeth—his ex—came to see him and said she wanted him back. What hurts most is not even Elizabeth's confession. It is that Clarke confided in the guys but not in Audrey. It happened on Wednesday, the same day as their cake tasting. There had been plenty of time to tell her—at the tasting, at dinner that night, at lunch yesterday, or in the cab earlier tonight. Instead, he kept it from her.

Audrey feels betrayed. Angry. Hurt. These emotions are foreign when it comes to Clarke, and she has no idea how to sort them out in public. So she does what she always does: she plays the role of laughing, optimistic Audrey. But the facade drops the moment she and Clarke step onto the sidewalk outside Oliver and Naomi's place.

Clarke smiles and gently catches her arm. "Okay, now tell me what's wrong."

Audrey jerks away. His expression flickers with confusion. She crosses her arms and stares down at her boots as a terrifying realization washes over her. She is not just upset that Clarke didn't tell her about Elizabeth. If she is brutally honest, the idea of Clarke and Elizabeth spending time together makes her stomach twist with something dangerously close to jealousy.

"Why didn't you tell me that Elizabeth came to see you on Wednesday?" she finally asks.

He frowns. "How did you know that?"

"Well, not from you!" she snaps.

His eyes narrow. "Spy much, Dree?"

"Secrets much, Superman?" she shoots back, using the nickname he hates most.

He throws up his hands. He says he didn't mean for it to be some big secret. But Audrey presses the real wound: he told the guys and not his fiancée. She winces as soon as the word leaves her mouth, hearing how jealous she sounds. He narrows his eyes again, speculative. She holds up a hand and says she knows she is not actually his fiancée. But she is his friend. She thought his best friend.

"You are my best friend," he insists. "Seriously, what's the big deal?"

She huffs. Such a guy. She tells him to forget it and starts toward the curb to hail a cab. But Clarke grabs her hand. They are not done yet. She turns back and waits.

He grinds out that having an ex-girlfriend stop by is not something you tell your fiancée. It felt strange to bring up. Audrey challenges him: Elizabeth didn't just stop by. She said she wanted him back. Clarke accuses her of being thorough with her eavesdropping. Audrey asks again if Elizabeth wants him back. He looks down at his feet, then back at her, and shrugs. "So she says."

Audrey studies him. She asks what happened between him and Elizabeth back then. He never talked about it. She thought there was not much to tell, but now she knows they have secrets. He tells her to stop, asks how old she is—eight? She doesn't rise to the bait. She asks again what happened.

"Oh my God, this is why I don't have girlfriends," he says, plowing his fingers through his hair. "They're demanding and pushy."

Audrey's lips part in hurt. She says she wasn't asking as a girlfriend. She was asking as— "A friend, I know," he finishes tiredly. He apologizes for what he said, but he doesn't want to talk about it. It was a long time ago. Elizabeth moved on, he moved on.

"Except she didn't," Audrey persists. She cannot stop herself. Something strange is burning in her stomach, and she wants it to stop. Elizabeth didn't move on. She thinks Clarke is engaged, and she still came and made a move.

Clarke gestures between them. "Because Liz knows this is fake."

The words are not meant to hurt her. They shouldn't hurt her. But they do.

"Got it," Audrey says, suddenly exhausted down to her bones. "Well, if this is so fake, I guess this is as good a time as any to call it."

"Call what?"

"The 'engagement,'" she says, lifting her hands into air quotes. Scandal Boy has backed off. His mother got a lesson in not sticking her nose where it doesn't belong. And his ex-girlfriend got the wake-up call that she let a good one get away.

"That's not why I've been doing this," he snaps.

"No?" she asks.

"No!"

Her frustration bursts out. "Well, how am I supposed to know when you don't tell me!"

"Because I don't tell you everything, Audrey!" he shouts. "I'm sorry, but I don't. We can be friends without me having to fucking spill my guts every minute of the damned day."

The hurt is stronger this time. Not the sting of a paper cut, but the throb of something much deeper.

"Got it," she says, turning away.

"Dree, wait—"

"No, Clarke." She turns back, keeping her face expressionless, her tone calm. She thinks separate cabs would be a good idea. They should take a night to cool down.

"And then what?" He shoves his hands into his pockets, looking as lost as she feels. They never fight.

She shrugs. "Then we figure out how to get ourselves out of the mess we got ourselves into."

Clarke says nothing for a long moment. Then, "Sure. Okay. Let's get you a cab."

Wordlessly, they walk to the curb. It is late on a Saturday, so it takes a few minutes to find an available cab. Audrey is relieved when he opens the door for her but doesn't follow her inside.

"You sure this is what you want?" he asks quietly before closing the door. "To end the engagement?"

She looks into his familiar gold-brown eyes and nods. "I'm tired of pretending."

He holds her gaze, then jerks his head in understanding. "Sure. I get it."

Audrey pulls the door shut and does not look his way as the cab drives off. She squeezes her eyes shut. Clarke isn't the only one keeping secrets. Audrey is tired of pretending—but what terrifies her down to her very soul is that she isn't tired of pretending to be engaged. She is tired of pretending she wants it to end.

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

This chapter is a masterclass in emotional misdirection and heartbreak. The dinner party smile, the sidewalk crack, the argument that says everything and nothing—it all lands with painful precision. Audrey's jealousy is so human, and Clarke's stubborn blindness is so frustratingly male. The final line is a dagger: she isn't tired of the fake engagement. She is tired of pretending she wants it to end. That single revelation reframes the entire chapter and makes my heart ache for her. The dialogue is sharp, the tension is thick, and the emotional honesty is devastating. I could not look away.

## Next Chapter Prediction

Based on this cliffhanger, I predict Chapter 15 will be a painful cooling-off period that neither Audrey nor Clarke can actually endure. They will try to avoid each other, but their friends—especially Claire and Naomi—will sense the tension and push them together. Elizabeth may linger in the background, but the real battle is now between Audrey and her own heart. I think Clarke will replay the sidewalk conversation and realize he hurt Audrey in a way he never intended. Expect an awkward reunion, a forced conversation about what "fake" really means, and maybe a confession that neither of them is ready to hear. The fake engagement may be over on paper, but the real feelings are just beginning.
