# Chapter 18: The Trousseau Trap and the Kiss That Changed Everything

Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 18 of "Marriage on Madison Avenue." Buckle up, because this is the chapter where Audrey's neat little plan starts to crack, and Clarke discovers that a lingerie store is a very dangerous place for a man who has spent years convincing himself he only sees his best friend as a best friend.

We open on Tuesday, February 25, and Audrey has just dropped a bomb over lunch with Claire and Naomi. She is marrying Clarke. At the Plaza. In a month. Naomi practically asks if they have stepped into *The Matrix*, and Claire, usually the calm one, can only stare. When they press her, Audrey admits this is not just about thwarting Clarke's mother, getting back at Elizabeth, or telling Scandal Boy and all of social media to suck it. That was the original engagement. This is something else.

The problem is Audrey cannot quite explain what that something else is. Every day since Clarke suggested it, the idea has felt a little clearer. She can see the wedding, yes, but more than that, she can see the marriage: coffee every morning, pep talks, cocktails at the end of the day, arguing over takeout. Claire asks if it is a marriage of convenience. Naomi hopefully supplies lust. Audrey shuts that down fast. It is not that kind of marriage.

Audrey calls it a friendship marriage, not cold but safe. She tells them the best marriages are built on friendship, and the only way she was ever going to have that was with Clarke. Naomi keeps pushing about sex, and Audrey finally snaps that she is allowed to choose her own path. Claire and Naomi each have different loves, different lives. Audrey loves Clarke as much as they love Oliver and Scott, but it is different.

Then Claire gently asks if Audrey wants different. Audrey's answer is quiet and raw: she wants safe. She wants someone who will never hurt her. Naomi immediately connects it to Brayden. Audrey nods. Claire understands, but she still worries. She asks if Audrey is really ready to give up all hope of romance. Audrey warns her not to say she is too young. Claire does not, but she points out that plenty of people meet the love of their life in their thirties. What happens if Audrey gets swept off her feet two years from now? Audrey says she and Clarke talked about it. If one of them meets someone they cannot live without, they will deal with it. But why sit around lonely on the off chance, when she could have something lovely now?

And there it is: Audrey admits she is a little lonely. Naomi and Claire have their partners. Most of Audrey's nights are solo. Her romantic history is dismal. Naomi grants that people marry for worse reasons all the time. Claire, reluctantly, jumps on the bandwagon and asks the intrusive question: is this friends with benefits? Audrey says they will live together, separate bedrooms. No benefits. Clarke does not see her that way.

But Naomi and Claire catch the wording. Audrey said *he* does not see *her* that way. She did not say how *she* sees *him*. Audrey freezes, because suddenly she is remembering Clarke's kisses. The engagement dinner. The cake shop. The ski lodge. The ski lodge one knocked her off her feet. She wonders when he got so hot. Naomi says he has always been hot; Audrey just buffered herself against it. Claire says the engagement ring has a way of changing things. By pretending to see Clarke differently, Audrey forced herself to actually see him that way.

Audrey asks how to undo it. Claire says, well, do not marry him. Naomi thinks friends with benefits could be workable. Audrey calls it potentially epically disastrous. Claire winces. Audrey insists this is the best decision of her life. But she does not miss the concerned look her friends exchange. She understands their pact. They look out for each other's romantic interests. But Audrey does not fit into either of their categories. She has not given up on love. She does not think all men are cheats. She just knows big love comes with big risks, and she cannot survive another Brayden. Clarke is safe. Clarke has always been simply Audrey's. Now she just has to figure out how not to want him, so she does not lose him.

Then we jump to Wednesday, February 26, and Clarke is in hell. Specifically, he is in a lingerie store with Audrey, feeling too large, too male, and too aware of every scrap of silk and lace around him. Audrey explains that the store is giving her an entire trousseau on the house in exchange for documenting the shopping process with her lover. She blows him a kiss. He pretends to bat it away.

The saleswoman, Michelle, explains that a trousseau is old-fashioned for the clothing a woman brings into her new marriage, including the unmentionables. Clarke would love nothing more than to not mention the bras and thongs surrounding him. He would love even more to not think about Audrey wearing them. Audrey cheerfully asks where they start: bras, panties, teddies? Clarke's pulse races until he realizes she is talking to Michelle, not him. Then his pulse races anyway.

Michelle offers them a sitting area and drinks. Audrey wants white wine. Clarke asks for beer. He would prefer something stronger. When Audrey tries to take pictures for the deal, Clarke covers her phone lens. She teases him, saying he looks like he is about to be violently ill on a table of expensive panties. He reminds her he banned the word *vagina*. Now he is adding *panties* to the list. Audrey rolls her eyes and jokes about underpants, boxers versus briefs, and how women's equivalents became unmentionable. She even says she is putting that in a story.

But then she softens. She can tell he is not himself. Clarke admits he feels out of his league. She reminds him he has seen plenty of lingerie out in the wild. She has stopped by his place before brunch and found Saturday-night companions lingering around wearing very little. Clarke mutters that it is not his fault women never leave when you want them to. Audrey suddenly looks nervous and asks if he is going to say that about her. Clarke frowns. Of course they will live under the same roof. In fact, it is what he is most looking forward to. His home feels most right when Audrey is in it. Home almost feels like wherever Audrey is. He winces at his own cliché.

He asks if she is having second thoughts, telling her she can back out anytime, no hard feelings. She laughs at how crazy that sounds, a groom telling his bride there will be no hard feelings if she backs out. Clarke says that is what makes their situation perfect: they care about each other's happiness. Her being happy matters most to him. She squeezes his fingers and agrees, but then points out that it still does not explain why he is acting like a nervous virgin. Clarke admits he has not spent much time in lingerie stores. Seeing all the unmentionables in their original habitat, not being peeled off some woman's naked body, is different.

And that is when the trouble really begins. Audrey picks up a peach-colored thong and gives the elastic a gentle tug. Clarke's body responds immediately and without restraint. His brain panics, because the naked body that flashes through his mind is not some faceless woman from his past. It is Audrey.

Michelle returns with their drinks. Clarke manages an inarticulate grunt. Audrey covers for him, saying his testosterone is flaring up. Michelle laughs and jokes about putting a flat screen in the back to make guys feel at ease. Clarke does not need a flat screen. He needs a cold shower. As they walk to the back, his gaze drops to Audrey's backside. He has been her friend for years, and he has never noticed how shapely her butt is, how perfectly—then Audrey catches him looking. Michelle asks about honeymoon plans. Audrey says Clarke insisted it be a surprise. Clarke never insisted any such thing. They never talked about a honeymoon. But now he is thinking about it: Audrey in a tiny bikini, in one of those skimpy white nightgowns, or wearing nothing at all. He shakes his head. This has to stop. It is Audrey, for God's sake.

The back area is even more feminine: a pale pink tufted couch, a chandelier, dressing rooms with heavy pink curtains. Michelle says she already set aside a few things and has more ideas. Audrey takes video. Clarke tries to look like he wants to be there. They take a selfie, and Audrey complains that this is why people have selfie sticks. Clarke takes the phone, says he has longer arms. They have taken hundreds of selfies over the years, but those were friend selfies. Now he craves something more. He asks about Scandal Boy. Audrey shrugs and says there have been subtext jabs about bets on when the vain socialite and her BFF beard will back down, but nothing too nasty. It is the only excuse he needs.

Clarke hooks his hand under her calves and scoops her legs over his. She yelps, laughs, loops an arm around his neck, and teases, "Way to sell it, honey." He grins back, "Look in love, pookie." She presses her cheek to his, then kisses his cheek with a playful smack. A friend kiss. And Clarke is plagued again by that inconvenient craving for more.

Before he can talk himself out of it, he turns his face and captures her mouth. Audrey stills in surprise, then recovers faster than before. Her lips part almost immediately, and he deepens the kiss. His tongue brushes hers, playful, experimental. His body aches to lean her back, discover what she is wearing under the pink sweater, learn the feel and taste of her. Then Michelle returns with a "Whoopsie!" Audrey pulls away. Clarke's fingers press into her back, wanting to bring her back, but he reluctantly releases her. Audrey laughs off the interruption, not embarrassed. Why should she be? Engaged couples are notorious for not keeping their hands off each other. And the store itself promises a very naughty honeymoon. A honeymoon that will not happen. Or at least, not with Audrey wearing tiny amounts of lace and nothing else.

Clarke reaches for his beer and tries to pay attention to Michelle talking about the Moulin Rouge line. All he really wants is to hand over his credit card, take all of it, and drag Audrey home for a fashion show of their own. *Get it together, man. It's Dree.* Audrey heads to the dressing room, then pops back out and asks for her phone. She scrolls through and groans: he did not get a single shot of them kissing. That would have knocked Scandal Boy down a peg or two. Clarke says, "Sorry, babe," as if he has not a care in the world. But inside, he is shaken to his core. His reasons for kissing her had nothing to do with Scandal Boy and everything to do with the fact that he wants her naked. And he wants her to want him back.

Reader's Impressions & Star Rating: This chapter is a delicious turning point. The lunch scene with Claire and Naomi is sharp, funny, and painfully honest, especially when Audrey admits she wants safe more than she wants romantic risk. But the lingerie store scene is where the chapter truly sparkles. Clarke's panic is hilarious, but it is also deeply revealing. The kiss is not just fan service; it is the moment the "friendship marriage" starts to become something neither of them can control. The writing balances humor and heat with genuine emotional stakes. I loved seeing Audrey's logic collide with her buried desire, and Clarke's realization that Audrey is different in every way. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars

Next Chapter Prediction: I predict the next chapter will force Audrey and Clarke to deal with the aftermath of that kiss. Audrey will try to rebuild her buffer and insist it was just for show, while Clarke will struggle not to let his jealousy and desire show. Naomi and Claire will probably push Audrey to admit the truth, and Scandal Boy may escalate things online. The honeymoon "surprise" Clarke suddenly imagined might become real, and the separate-bedrooms plan will start to look very fragile. Expect more tension, more denial, and another kiss that neither of them can explain away.
