# Chapter 31: The Three Words He Couldn’t Finish

Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 31 of "The Deal: Off Campus." And wow, what a chapter this is. It is the kind of chapter that starts with a simple text message and ends with a slammed door echoing through your chest. If you thought the tension between Hannah and Garrett was already complicated, wait until you see how one question about a date turns everything into an emotional collision.

We begin with Hannah getting ready for bed. She and Allie have just walked through the door, and she is probably ready to unwind, maybe replay the night in her head, maybe think about Garrett. But then her phone buzzes. It’s Garrett. He says he needs to talk to her. Now. Hannah is surprised because she figured he would crash the second he got home from the game. But his texts are short, clipped, and unmistakably angry. She asks if he wants to call, and he replies that he is already at her door.

Immediately, Hannah’s stomach drops. Garrett does not usually show up unannounced. She walks past the common area, opens the door, and there he is—still in his hockey jacket and sweatpants, looking like he rushed over without even stopping to change. That detail alone tells us this is serious. He asks where Allie is, then asks if they can talk in Hannah’s room. The queasiness inside her grows. She cannot read his face at all. His eyes are shuttered, his voice empty. For a moment, she wonders if this has something to do with his father, especially after whatever tense exchange happened earlier. But she is wrong. This is not about his dad. This is about her.

The second the bedroom door closes, Garrett demands to know if she is going out with Justin this weekend. Hannah is shocked, then guilty. She asks who told him. Logan heard it from Kohl. Garrett does not move. He does not unzip his jacket. He does not blink. He just keeps his gaze locked on her and asks if it is true. Hannah says, “Yes and no.” And that answer only makes him more annoyed. She explains that Justin asked her out, but she has not decided if she is actually going. Garrett presses harder. Did she say she would? Hannah admits yes, but before she can finish, his eyes blaze. She tells him Justin asked last week, the day after Beau’s party. That changes something in Garrett’s expression. His face relaxes, just slightly, because that was before Dean’s thing. Before her and Garrett. He takes a breath and says it is not as bad as he thought.

But then the stone mask returns. His nostrils flare. He circles back to the part that clearly guts him: what does she mean, she has not decided if she is going? Hannah gives a helpless shrug, and Garrett explodes. “You’re not fucking going, Hannah!” His sharp voice makes her wince. She fires back, asking says who. Because last she checked, they are not dating. They are just fooling around. And that sentence lands like a grenade.

Garrett stops. His mouth twists into a scowl. He says, fine, maybe she is right. Maybe they are just fooling around. Hannah’s thoughts are spinning. She reminds him that he said he does not do girlfriends. He corrects her: he said he does not have time for a girlfriend. But priorities change. And there it is—the first real crack in his armor. Hannah falters. She asks if he is saying he wants her to be his girlfriend. He says, “Yeah, maybe that’s what I’m saying.”

This should be a triumphant moment. It should be the moment where everything clicks. But Hannah is Hannah. She is careful, pragmatic, terrified of impulsive decisions. She asks why. Why would he want that? She points out that he is all one-track about hockey, and besides, they argue too much. Garrett rolls his eyes and says they do not argue—they bicker. Bickering is fun and good-natured. Arguing is not. And Hannah, despite everything, laughs. “Oh my God, we’re arguing about the way we argue!” The laughter breaks some of the tension. Garrett’s shoulders relax. He steps closer, searching her face. He tells her he knows she is into him. He is definitely into her. Would it really be so bad if they made this thing official?

Hannah gulps. She hates being put on the spot. She is too confused to make sense of anything. She never makes decisions without careful thought. Other girls might do cartwheels at the idea of being Garrett Graham’s girlfriend, but Hannah did not expect to like him. She did not expect to sleep with him. She did not expect to be standing here with the possibility of him becoming her boyfriend. She finally says she does not know. She did not really think about them in terms of dating. She just wanted to explore the attraction and see what happened. But she did not think any farther ahead. Her mind turns to mush. She has no idea what this even is, or where it could go.

And that hesitation destroys him. Garrett’s expression changes, and the hurt in his gray eyes cuts into her like a knife. He says, “You don’t know what this is or where it could go? Jesus, Hannah.” His breath shakes. His broad shoulders sag. He tells her that if she honestly does not know, then they are wasting their time. Because he knows exactly what it is. He starts to say, “I—” and then stops. The silence is deafening. Hannah whispers, “You what?” He tries again. “I—” He stops again. His gray eyes darken. Then he retreats. He says, forget it. Maybe she is right. This was all about exploring the attraction. His bitterness is sharp enough to draw blood. He calls himself her sex therapist. Then worse—her “fluffer.” Hannah does not even understand the word at first. He explains it crudely: in porn, the fluffer keeps the guys hard between takes. That was his job, right? To get her hot for Kohl? To get her ready to bone Justin?

Hannah is indignant. She tells him that is disgusting, and unfair, and he knows it. She reminds him that Justin asked her out before she slept with Garrett. And she probably was not even going to go. But Garrett laughs harshly. “You probably weren’t going to? Yeah. Thanks for that.” He walks to the door and delivers the final blow: “Just go on the damn date. You got what you wanted from me. I guess Justin can take it from here.”

Hannah calls his name, but he is already gone. Not just gone—he slams her bedroom door, thuds through the suite, and slams the outer door too. The sound reverberates through the empty room. Hannah stares at the space where he stood just seconds ago. His hoarse words echo in her head: “I know exactly what it is.” And a vise of emotion constricts her heart, because she is pretty sure she knows exactly what it is too. The tragedy is that her split-second moment of indecision may have just thrown it all away.

**Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating:**

This chapter is an emotional masterclass in miscommunication. It hurts in the best way. Garrett’s jealousy is not just possessive—it is vulnerable. He came over in his hockey gear, clearly unable to wait, clearly needing to know where he stands. And Hannah, who is so careful and so afraid of being hurt, gives the most honest answer she can: she does not know. But to Garrett, “I don’t know” sounds like rejection. The unfinished “I—” broke my heart. We all know what he was about to say, and so does Hannah. The door slam felt like a cliffhanger that leaves you breathless. This chapter deserves a high rating for tension, character depth, and raw emotion. Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.9 / 5 Stars

**Next Chapter Prediction:**

Hannah will not sleep tonight. She will replay every word, every pause, every hurt look on Garrett’s face. I predict she will talk to Allie first, then maybe text Garrett or even go to his place. She might cancel the date with Justin—if she has not already lost the chance to explain. Garrett will likely be cold, distant, and stubborn, but his feelings are too big to stay buried. The next chapter will probably force them to confront the unspoken “I—” that hung in the air. There will be a chase, a confession, or at least a moment where Hannah has to decide if she is brave enough to go after what she wants. And knowing Garrett, he will not make it easy.
