# Chapter 6: A Deal Struck in a Jeep
Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 6 of "The Deal: Off Campus." Buckle up, because this chapter is a masterclass in negotiation, charm, and the dangerous art of pretending you don't care. We are finally inside Garrett Graham's head, and let me tell you, it is a fascinating, messy, and surprisingly vulnerable place to be.
The chapter opens with Garrett driving Hannah Wells home after a party where he has already managed to offend her once. He knows he needs her—not for romance, but for tutoring. His grades are slipping, and his coach has just delivered a threat so vivid it involved tasting shoe polish for years. Hockey is Garrett's entire life, the one thing that makes him feel alive and soothed at the same time. But his father, the legendary Phil Graham, has always treated Garrett's future like a personal reputation project. Garrett hates him for it. Every bruise, every brutal practice, every hour on the ice is not for his father—it is for himself, and to beat his father at his own game.
Still, none of that matters if he flunks out. So he needs Hannah. And Hannah, unfortunately, has a crush on a football player named Kohl.
Garrett can hardly believe it. He watches her in the Jeep, taking in her round cheeks, pouty mouth, olive skin, green eyes, and that tiny beauty mark above her lip. Now that he has noticed her body, he cannot un-notice it. But he reminds himself he is not driving her home to score. He needs her too much to ruin this by sleeping with her.
So he starts asking careful, nosy questions. How long has she wanted to "make love" to Kohl? She glares. He guesses it must be recent, since Kohl transferred two months ago. Maybe a month? Still no answer. He asks if it is just physical or if she actually wants to date him. She begs him to stop talking about it. Garrett, being Garrett, pivots to a challenge. He tells her he was wrong about her. He thought she was upfront, ballsy, not someone too scared to admit she is into a guy.
That hits a nerve. Hannah admits, through clenched teeth, that maybe she is into Kohl. A teeny, tiny bit. Garrett grins. He asks why she hasn't asked Kohl out. She is horrified by the idea. She doesn't even know him. Garrett says that's exactly why she should. She finally confesses that Kohl makes her nervous. The vulnerability surprises Garrett. He is used to her sarcasm and confidence, so this uncertain version of Hannah unsettles him.
Then he lays out the truth as he sees it: men love the chase, and she is making it too easy. Kohl already knows she is interested. A man always knows when a woman wants him. Garrett figured it out in five seconds. And if Hannah goes out with Garrett, Kohl will notice. People want what they cannot have. Case in point: Hannah wanting Kohl.
He proposes a deal. There is a party next Saturday—Beau Maxwell's birthday bash. The whole football team will be there, including Kohl. Garrett will bring Hannah as his date. They will mingle, have a few beers, and he will introduce her around. Chicks will want to murder her. Guys will wonder who she is and why she hasn't been on their radar. Kohl will wonder too, but they will ignore him. It will drive him crazy and make Hannah seem even more unattainable.
Hannah is skeptical, but she is also intrigued. She asks if he really thinks going to a party with him will turn her into a celebrity. Garrett says yes. Not out of arrogance, but because he knows his reputation at this school. Yet inside, he admits something raw: sometimes he doesn't feel half as cool as people think. He compares himself to a pond he skated on as a kid—shiny and smooth from a distance, but covered in uneven edges and crisscrossed skate marks up close. That is Garrett. Covered with marks nobody ever seems to notice.
For a split second, he almost tells Hannah to forget the whole thing. It feels wrong that a girl this smart and sharp cares what a douche like Kohl thinks. But then he thinks of his team, the guys counting on him, and he pushes his misgivings aside.
He coaxes her. The makeup exam is next Friday, so they have a week and a half to study. He will write the exam, and then on Saturday night they will go to Maxwell's party and show Kohl how sexy and desirable Hannah is. Hannah grumbles that she cannot commit to tutoring him for the whole semester. He promises it will just be this week. She hesitates, and just when Garrett has given up hope, she sighs and says, "All right. We've got a deal."
Garrett is genuinely shocked. A part of him almost feels a sense of loss now that he has won. But he gives himself a mental high five and drives into the lot behind the dormitories. Hannah lives in Bristol House. He offers to walk her in, but she refuses, phone ready to dial 911. He sticks out his hand for a handshake. She stares at it like it is diseased. He rolls his eyes and withdraws it.
She tells him she works until eight tomorrow. They can meet when she is done. He offers to come to her, but she blanches at the idea of people thinking they are friends. She demands his address instead. He is amused. He has never met anyone so repulsed by his popularity. He thinks he might like it. He tells her she will be the most popular girl on her floor if he comes over. She just says, "Text me your address." He beams and says he will see her tomorrow night. She gives him a sour look, hops out, and reluctantly taps on the window. He rolls it down and mocks, "Forget something?" She says primly, "Thank you for the ride." Then she is gone, her green dress fluttering in the night breeze as she hurries toward the darkened buildings.
Reader's Impressions & Star Rating
I absolutely loved this chapter. It is pure setup, but it crackles with chemistry. Being inside Garrett's head is a gift—he is cocky, funny, and strategic, but underneath all that swagger is a guy who hates his father, feels like a fraud, and secretly craves something real. The way he reads Hannah, teases her, and then accidentally reveals his own wounds is beautifully done. Hannah is no pushover either. She gives as good as she gets, and her vulnerability about Kohl makes her feel human rather than just a sarcastic heroine. The negotiation in the Jeep is flirty, tense, and fun. It sets up the fake-date, make-him-jealous plot perfectly, while also planting the seeds for something much deeper between Garrett and Hannah.

Next Chapter Prediction
Next, we will almost certainly see Hannah arriving at Garrett's place for their first tutoring session. Expect awkward tension, sharp banter, and Garrett being far more distracted by her than by whatever ethics textbook he is supposed to be studying. Hannah will try to keep things professional, but Garrett's charm—and his rare honest moments—will start to chip away at her defenses. We may also get a glimpse of Garrett's teammates, a phone call from his father, or a mention of Kohl that makes Garrett jealous in a way he refuses to admit. The deal is set, but the real game is just beginning.
