Once upon a time—not so long ago in Natalia's eyes—her father, Anton, would find a way to come to her. Whatever barriers the world put in his path, he defeated them. Every Sunday, he performed the same miracle: forty kilometers between the capital and Snagov, covered by any means he could find. He would take a cab if one was available, hop on the back of a farmer's wagon if his legs gave out, or simply walk until his shoes wore thin. And when the road failed him entirely, he hitched rides with peasants carrying cows and chickens in their dusty carriages, grateful for every minute those clattering wheels carried him closer.

But Natalia never needed to see her father's face to know he had arrived. His arrival was announced long before he ever reached the big house—by the happy squeals of the village children, who followed him like a trail of music, chewing the bright pieces of rock candy he handed out from his rucksack.

This Sunday, though, there was no laughter on the road. And the Sunday before? No happy voices either.

As the hours melted away beneath a merciless sun, Natalia sat by the gate, waiting for a promise that never appeared. Her small heart beat a rhythm of hope, then doubt, then a dull ache of disappointment. She was too hot. She was too lonely. Her stomach was too empty. Finally, she stood up and wandered back toward the house, kicking pebbles at her feet, trying to kick away the hollow feeling in her chest.

"She did not get far before a familiar voice called out from the gate—a voice bright with mischief and friendship.

“Talia! Hey! Want to come down to the river?”

Her face lit up like the first star in the evening sky. One of the village boys poked his sunburned face between the slats of the wooden gate, and in that moment, she remembered everything she loved about this place: climbing the crumbling tower of the church to ring the heavy bell, sneaking into forbidden orchards, and running wild through the fields with children who never stopped laughing. She needed that company today. She needed, more than anything, not to sit inside and watch her mother's worry swallow the whole house.

“Yes!” she shouted, and the boy took off down the hillside.

She ran after him, her bare feet beating against the earth, her disappointment left behind in a cloud of dust.

But the fever was already waiting for her.

The next morning, Natalia woke to a strange, sharp light that told her it was nearly noon. She had overslept—but worse than that, her mother and cousins had not even tried to wake her. A heavy weight pressed down on her limbs, and her nightgown was soaked through, clinging to her skin like a soggy sail. When she propped herself up on one elbow, the whole room appeared to sway. The clock spun before her eyes. Shadows moved in impossible ways.

She tried to rise, but her legs refused. Perhaps she only needed to sleep a little longer? Perhaps her strength would return? So she closed her eyes again, and let the darkness pull her down.

In those endless hours, her mother's voice came to her from far away, soft and worried and broken. A cool cloth touched Natalia's burning forehead, and she gasped as the fire in her throat seemed to crackle. She curled into herself, turning to the wall, where the shadows of poplar trees played lazily, swaying and twisting in the breeze, until slowly—so slowly—they disappeared into a great darkness.

There was no day. No night. Only a deep chasm pulling her further and further away from the world she knew.

Then, in one final, shimmering moment of clarity, she remembered: the dusty trail, the long run, the sweet, cool water she had gulped down from the old well—the well all the village children whispered might be spoiled. It had tasted so wonderful, so pure...

How sweet and how cool that water was.

How terribly sweet.

Meanwhile, in the gray hour just before sunrise, Despina moved through the house like a woman possessed. She dragged the heavy trunk to the front steps and piled Natalia's dolls beside their travel cases. It had been, perhaps, an hour since Ecaterina returned alone, her face pale with defeat.

“I’m sorry, Desi, it’s no use. All doctors have been deployed to the city hospitals. There isn’t one left in the entire province. And no one will take you back to Bucharest. It’s simply too dangerous.”

Despina stared at her sister with cold disbelief. “It’s forty kilometers! Forty kilometers that Anton has covered on foot more times than I can count. How dangerous can it be?”

“The city has been blockaded, Despina. The fighter planes can be seen circling from here. Be reasonable.”

Despina knew it was true. Even Anton, with his will of iron, had not been able to break through the circle of fire in recent weeks. She remembered the last time he had appeared at their door half past midnight—so exhausted, so haggard, that she had barely recognized him. It was only the smile buried beneath that thick stubble, and the gleam in his sunken eyes, that kept her from collapsing at his feet in tears.

But how could she explain that to Ecaterina? How could she make her sister understand that nothing in this world would stop her from going home to her husband? It didn't matter if the city was evacuated. It didn't matter if the train station had been abandoned. It didn't matter if her daughter was feverish and weak and every road led to danger. If Despina had to carry Natalia in her own arms—weakened as she was—she would walk to Bucharest alone.

“Ecaterina, look out there, at the field,” Despina said, gesturing toward the darkness that stretched before them. “There are hundreds of peasants working on this land every single day. Surely one of them will be willing to help.”

Her words hung in the air, fierce and unyielding, as the sun prepared to rise upon a country torn apart by war.

## Reader's Impression & Star Rating

Oh, my heart. *My heart.* This chapter is devastating in the quietest possible way. We watch Natalia wait for a father who cannot come, drink from a well that might be cursed, and fall into a fever that takes her somewhere beyond the reach of her mother’s voice. There is something deeply terrifying about that moment when a child slips away into illness, and Roxanne captures it with such tender, haunting detail. And then there is Despina—so fierce, so stubborn, so desperate to reach the man she loves that she will defy a blockaded city, a war, and even death itself. It is love in its rawest form, and it leaves me breathless.

## Next Chapter Prediction

With Despina determined to get back to Bucharest no matter the cost, I predict the next chapter will take us on a harrowing journey through military checkpoints and bombed roads. Despina will find some way—perhaps with the help of a sympathetic peasant—to slip past the blockade, carrying Natalia, whose fever may worsen with every mile. And when they finally reach the city, I fear they will not find Anton waiting with open arms. Instead, they may discover something far more terrible, something that will change Natalia’s fate forever...
