Chapter 1066:

Dominic’s gaze was cold as ice, his eyes fixed unflinchingly on her. When he noticed her flustered state—her teeth nervously worrying her lip—an unexpected flicker of sympathy softened his severity. “Give me a reason.” His face remained hard, but his voice carried the faintest edge of gentleness.

Lauretta faltered, her eyes dropping as she couldn’t bear to meet his. Her grip on his arm grew unconsciously tighter, so much so that she didn’t realize she was hurting him.

Dominic winced, his brow furrowing as he stared at her in puzzlement. What was going on with her? Why couldn’t she just tell him what was bothering her?

Drawing in a deep breath, Lauretta seemed to summon her resolve and lifted her eyes with newfound determination. “I’ve been keeping something from you. The truth is—”

Her hesitant words made Dominic’s heart lurch violently in his chest. Could it be that Lauretta had someone else in her heart? Was she planning to confess that she was unwilling to marry him? The thought darkened his expression, a chill seeping into the air around them.

“I have a son!” The confession burst out of Lauretta, her head bowing immediately as her heart raced. She clung to his arm with anxious desperation, unsure of how he would react.

“What?” Dominic asked sharply, almost convinced he had misheard.

Once spoken, the truth became easier to repeat. Lauretta steadied her voice and said, “I have a son. He won’t interfere with our agreement, but just now, I was informed that he’s been kidnapped—and I can’t go through with the wedding while he’s still in danger.”

After she spoke, it felt like a heavy burden slid off her shoulders. She knew she and Dominic were never meant to last. They would go their separate ways amicably once he found the woman he truly wanted. The fault was hers—she had let her heart slip, allowing feelings for him to grow in secret.

Dominic had barely registered the shock of her having a son when the word “kidnapped” hit him like a blow. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner? The child’s rescue comes first!” he snapped. His frown deepened as he gripped her hand. “What did the kidnappers demand? Have you involved the police?”

Lauretta shook her head quickly. “No. They threatened to kill him if I did. I plan to pay the ransom, just to buy time.”

“Do you know where they’re holding him?” Dominic pressed.

“Yes. I’ve already sent someone to bring him back.” Lauretta nodded firmly.

“That’s good—but how did you learn their location?” Dominic exhaled in relief, though curiosity edged into his tone.

Lauretta’s hand clutched tighter at his arm. “This isn’t the time for questions. I have to save him now.” She had noticed Christina’s reluctance to reveal too much, so she had no intention of explaining further.

“I’ll come with you. But first, we need confirmation of their exact location. Otherwise, we risk wasting time—or worse, tipping them off,” Dominic said, his tone calm yet resolute.
