No one understood better than she how brutal this journey had been. She had been alongside him the entire time, and even her own legs were sore, yet Brendon had endured far worse. She couldn’t even bring herself to look at his legs—red and swollen.
This ordeal had proven his steadfast love and devotion to Yolanda. Katie felt ashamed for ever doubting him, for once suspecting that he had wanted to rekindle things with Christina.

Yolanda gazed at the unconscious Brendon, and for once, her heart truly softened. Her face carried a genuine look of worry, not the usual pretense she wore. Realizing the lengths he had gone to in order to persuade King to save her life, her eyes filled with tears again. No other man in the world would have done such a thing for her. She even questioned whether her own father could have endured such a test. Perhaps Brendon’s feelings for her really did run deep…
“Don’t worry, Yolanda. The doctor said that as long as Brendon follows the advice and gets plenty of rest, he’ll recover,” Katie said softly, trying to reassure her.
“But he put himself in this condition because of me. It hurts so much to think about it. If it weren’t for—”

Before she could finish, the door burst open with a slam. Joselyn stormed inside, her face twisted with fury.
“Mom?” Katie called out hesitantly, startled by her harsh entrance.
Joselyn shot Yolanda a venomous glare and shoved her aside. “You wretched curse! Stay away from my son!”
“Mom, Yolanda hasn’t done anything wrong. How can you treat her like this? If Brendon finds out, he’ll be angry,” Katie said, stepping forward to support Yolanda protectively.
“She’s nothing but a curse. Why are you taking her side? If not for her, your brother wouldn’t be lying here like this!” Joselyn snapped, her eyes blazing. Then she jabbed a finger at Yolanda and barked, “If anything happens to my son, you’ll answer for it!”

Katie, unaware if there was any conflict between Yolanda and Joselyn, was left bewildered. She couldn’t understand why her mother, who had always seemed cordial with Yolanda before, now spoke with such venom. “Mom, what’s going on? Why are you treating Yolanda like—”
“Shut up!” Joselyn cut her off sharply. “I’ll never acknowledge her as part of our family. This snake doesn’t deserve your brother. She’s not even half the woman Christina is!”
Katie froze, stunned, before quickly finding her voice again. “Mom, have you fallen under that woman’s spell, too?”
It was one thing for her grandmother to be influenced by Christina, but now even her own mother seemed to have been brainwashed. Katie simply couldn’t understand how Christina managed to sway not one, but two of her family members.
