This chapter pulls us deep into the tangled, terrifying moments where a single secret can become a weapon, and where the need to protect a friend forces a girl to make a deal she never wanted to make. Let’s step inside that party, where the music is loud, the dresses are beautiful, and the danger is hiding in plain sight. Grab your headphones and settle in, because this is one chapter your heart won’t easily forget.

The night was supposed to be about prom. It was supposed to be about glittering dresses, laughing friends, and the kind of reckless joy that would become a memory worth keeping. But Ketty Beauchamp knew better. Some nights carry a shimmer that hides a storm underneath, and this was shaping up to be one of those nights.

There was Vaughn, of course. Vaughn, with his cocky grin and his wandering hands and his endless, infuriating demands. Earlier, he had said something that made Ketty feel like she was being tested. Now, sitting on the couch, phone glowing in her hand, she could see exactly what kind of game he was playing.

*I think you’d do anything.*

The words were simple. But beneath them, a threat pulsed, ugly and patient. Ketty had spent years learning how to handle guys like Vaughn. Rule number one: never let them see that they’ve gotten to you. Pretend it’s all a joke. Roll your eyes. Laugh it off. Usually, they get bored. Usually, they back down.

But the phone buzzed again, and the usual rules no longer applied.

*VAUGHN: You know what I want. Get ready for your closeup, Beauchamp.*

Ketty’s stomach dropped. She closed her eyes, just for a second, trying to freeze the moment. Inside her head, the world tilted, then steadied itself again. She opened her eyes, and life went on. Jenna was in the kitchen, laughing through a round of shots. Elin stood nearby, looking more miserable than a girl at prom should ever look. And Rosie—where was Rosie? Ketty scanned the room for her friend, someone who might understand the panic clawing at her throat without giving her those look, the kind of verdict that made you feel even smaller than you already felt. But Rosie wasn’t there. For the first time all night, her seat was empty. Maybe she was outside with FDR, stealing a moment in the cool air. Ketty almost smiled at the thought.

She couldn’t keep avoiding it. Vaughn wanted one thing, and he had made it painfully clear that he wouldn’t let it go until he got it. Not a joke. Not a kiss. Not a little taste. He wanted the thing he’d been asking for for months—a sex tape. Something he could hold over her forever. Something no one could ever take back.

Every alarm in Ketty’s head was screaming. She remembered her moms’ lectures about the permanence of the Internet. Most lectures sailed right over her head, but that one? That one had sunk in deep. The idea of sending a naked picture to anyone made her skin crawl. And a sex tape? That wasn’t a boundary. That was a cliff she had no intention of falling off.

But then her eyes drifted toward Elin again. Elin, who still looked so fragile beneath all that borrowed beauty, standing alone in that cluttered kitchen like she wasn’t sure she belonged anywhere anymore. Elin, who had done something unthinkable a few weeks ago, and who had trusted Ketty enough to share that truth. Ketty thought about Teddy, too. Teddy, who was finally joking again, sending lighthearted texts about retiring to Florida someday without him. Ketty felt sick when she thought about how quickly Teddy would start hating her if he ever found out what she was doing right now.

She didn’t want to be this person. She didn’t want to make secret bargains to protect the fragile pieces of her friends’ lives. But Elin had a chance at happiness if she could just get back together with Ben. If Elin could have a good prom night, a moment of sweaty, car-ride redemption, then maybe everything after would be okay. Vaughn could say whatever he wanted on Monday, but who would really believe him? People already thought Elin had gone to Cirque Lodge and shared a room with some coked-out Disney star. Rumors were just rumors. And Elin, once she was happy and confident again, might survive them.

Ketty only needed Vaughn to hold his tongue for now. Just long enough. Just long enough for Elin and Ben to find their way back to each other.

So she chewed the inside of her cheeks, told herself she had weaseled out of his requests before, and typed out the response before she could lose her nerve.

*KET: Deal.*

It sat on the screen for a moment, glowing like a confession. Ketty looked away. She told herself she’d figure out a way out of it later. She always did. She had to believe that.

Out on Fisher’s porch, the world felt colder than it should have been. Rosie Winchester wrapped her arms around herself, wishing she’d brought a coat. Wishing, deeper and more painful, that there was someone who might have told her to bring one. Someone who would notice she was shivering. Someone who would care enough to notice at all.

Goosebumps rose over her exposed back. She rubbed her arms, trying to generate warmth that just wouldn’t come. The porch furniture wasn’t anything special—bare, cushionless, cold—and when she sat down, the metal bit through her skirt, sharp and unforgiving, settling into her bones like an ache she couldn’t shake.

This stupid dress. Why had she even bought it? She remembered walking into Fisher’s legendary party condo earlier, and Elin, sweet, bright Elin, had gasped over Fisher’s gown. It looked like a painting, splashes of orange, blue, purple and green against a white background, cinched with a gold belt that made her waist look impossibly thin. Rosie could never pull that off. When Fisher shrugged and said she’d snagged it at a thrift shop, Rosie felt even worse about herself. Fisher probably spent fifty dollars and looked like she belonged in a movie. Rosie had spent too much trying too hard, and for what? To sit alone on a cold porch, feeling emptier than before she came.

She opened her borrowed clutch, desperate for anything that would settle her sour, churning stomach. A stick of gum. Just a stick of gum. She hadn’t eaten enough tonight. Maybe she never ate enough these days. She had thought the Red Bull at home would be enough to get her through the night, but now her body was screaming for something real.

Inside, someone turned up the stereo. The bass thumped through the closed doors and windows, a heartbeat of a party she didn’t feel a part of. And for some reason, that sound made her want to cry. She blinked furiously, refusing to let the tears fall, refusing to let that ache spill out of her eyes. She pressed her fingers to her goosebumped skin and told herself to hold it together. She touched her lips, as if searching for warmth, and waited—for what, she did not know.

The night was not yet over. Elin was still miserable. Vaughn was still grinning somewhere, holding his new power like a spark against dry grass. Rosie was freezing outside, unmoored and alone. And Ketty was trapped in the middle of a promise she already knew she could never keep.

The truth didn’t just unravel. It pulled everything with it.

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

This chapter left me absolutely breathless. Ketty’s quiet panic is is so visceral, especially her internal battle between protecting Elin and protecting her own dignity. You can feel the weight of that horrible choice pressing down on her shoulders. And Rosie’s cold, lonely moment on the porch is just devastating—it’s such a raw, honest picture of how someone can be surrounded by a party and still feel invisible. The author builds tension beautifully, alternating between party chaos and deep interior silence. The book is honest about the paralyzing decisions teenagers make under peer pressure, and the emotional stakes feel extremely real. I didn’t want to put it down.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rating: 4.7 / 5 Stars

## Next Chapter Prediction

Ketty made a deal with a shark, and sharks don’t let go easily. In the next chapter, I suspect Vaughn will test exactly how far her promises stretch, probably returning with a demand that’s even worse, or threatening to send Elin’s reputation up in flames the moment Ketty tries to back out. Meanwhile, Rosie’s loneliness outside that party may push her toward some kind of breaking point, and Elin might sense both of her friends are hiding something as Ben tries to find her. There’s a storm gathering over this prom night, and when the morning comes, at least one secret is going to spill into the light.
